Who else crave things they shouldn't have???

Sushi, unpasteurized goat cheese, salami, wine, rare steak...

I just got better the last few days from a very horrible month of all-day-every-day morning sickness, and now everything that I want to eat are all things I shouldn't!! :(( :(( :((

What are you having a hard time staying away from already?

  • I crave a kettle one extra dirty martini, not food.
Just out of curiosity though, why do you crave "unpasteurized" goat cheese? Does it taste different than the pasteurized kind?

  • I definitely WANT margaritas, wine, and beer.  Wouldn't say I'm having a hard time avoiding them.  When I was 5, my parents tried to adopt one of my friends and her little brother - the brother had FAS (we didn't get them as my parents had no significant experience with FAS, and the adoptive parents did.)

I had sushi for lunch yesterday and I have a sip of my husband's wine every so often. Do some research. High quality sushi is ok if you don't eat anything high in mercury (like tuna). Also, a sip of wine won't give your baby fetal alcohol syndrome. It's about moderation and eating. If you drink a small glass with dinner and slowly sip, you are ok. If you pound shots and binge drink, that's the problem. I highly recommend reading Expecting Better by Emily Oster. She has some quality research about all of this.
I do eat sushi from reputable places, and in the second/third tri, I do have the odd glass of wine (like 4 over the course of my first pregnancy.)  I have had a sip of home-brewed ice wine (drooooool) and one sip of beer.  DH hasn't had any wine or beer otherwise, so mostly, I'm not drinking.

But the full bottle of Patron on top of the fridge is mocking me (I TOLD DH I'd get him whiskey for his birthday if I got a BFP and Patron if not... so he got me Patron 2 days before the BFP.  Nooooooo.)

SUSHI! Funny because I didn't want it when I could have it lol. And those little deli sandwich platters you can order from Winco and Costco etc.

She may have meant soft cheeses since they can be unpasteurized. If that's the case then I know Athenos Feta Cheese is pasteurized.. says so in the ingredients. That may curb your craving!

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • All I want, every day, is a turkey & avocado deli sandwich on a dutch crunch roll. I will be taking as much turkey breast home as I can from the Thanksgivings we're attending so I can make some delicious, perfectly legal sandwiches with the meat. After that, I may start poaching and slicing turkey breasts at home. Definitely also missing my daily glass of red wine, salami, carefree nibbles of blue cheese at parties, etc.

Silver lining: I solved my sushi craving by ordering cooked sushi during the first bad week of my m/s and spending several hours revisiting it in the toilet. Just writing that sentence out made me nauseous. I think June will be soon enough for sushi.

  • Oh.  There is a nitrate-free line of lunch meat (and bacon!) available at a lot of grocery stores (Oscar Meyer Natural Selects, I think.)  No need to avoid that.

Target has a brand that is nitrate free as well. Can't think of the name right now. Also, boars head oven roasted chicken breast at the deli is nitrate free. I had a sandwich for lunch today.

Okay, I didn't know it was the nitrates that were an issue in Deli meat, I thought it was Listeria. (I'm totally ignorant on the issue, I just know I'm not supposed to have deli meat and all I want is a sandwich!)

Are the nitrate-free meats okay? This might change my life.

There's a specific brand and type that I always eat and it happens to come unpasteurized :(

Terrific replies!! I'll be ordering the book and cease my suffering at moderations!
  • I am craving this bottle of coffee and cream liquor that I bought on my cruise that I opened and its only good for 6 months after opening :( very sad that I cant drink it!!
  • Sushi and watermelon Margarita! But I chat by having California rolls and homemade watermelon slushes (pureed watermelon that I freeze). ;)
  • White wine. Seriously, everything else makes me want to throw up, but I feel like I could down a whole bottle of white wine.

  • Red g2 Gatorade on ice. Not regular ice. Those tiny cube ice chips from the hospital. Luckily I work in one...can't wait until tomorrow! It all stems from someone mentioning their craving of sonic ice chips a few weeks ago...curse you whoever that was :-P

You can actually heat lunch meat in the microwave to kill potential listeria if anyone is dying for a good deli sandwich :)
You can cook out listeria, but not nitrates, which is why some things along the lines of lunch meat are recommended in moderation (like hot dogs), along with the sodium content.

  • @Emilywooddesign‌ I second the smoked salmon and bagels. DH and I go to this local bagel shop every Sunday morning and that used to be my order. I can't wait until I can have it again.
  • @Kara8675‌ I craved chalk my entire 1st pregnancy.

(not actually quoting anyone, changed my mind):

This article made me feel like I'm eating whatever delicious soft cheeses my sister brings for Thanksgiving without checking whether they were pasteurized or not!

Also, @chrain and @tahitiandreamin, thanks for the book suggestion. Sounds right up my alley!

  • Liver. And I never eat liver so it's obviously just because I can't have it...

    @leenziepops‌

I now eat the Vietnamese rolls with bbq'd pork and tell them to hold any pâté. I like the deli-style one better too, but at least it still has the pickled veggies and cilantro :)

  • I'm eating so many of your "forbidden" foods, it's not even funny. I dont even want it, but I've been served deli meat and pâtés at dinners a lot lately (including some pork liver pâté), and I eat it. I've been fighting about it with DH, but I drink the occasional half-glass of wine (I'm hosting a happy hour tonight at a wine bar where you can buy either a tasting, half-glass, or full glass, so I'll get half-glasses and chug two glasses of water between each one, and probably eat cheese). I've tried to avoid unpasteurized cheeses, but it's not always sure at dinners and events. Strangely, my doctor here didn't even tell me to avoid these things though most of the meats are quite processed. The only thing they press here is toxoplasmosis, so I'm not allowed to eat undercooked lamb and mutton.

  • @Ladymouse‌ I too, have a bottle of Herradura tequila that I did not have a chance to indulge in before getting pregnant. It laughs at me as it chills so perfectly in the freezer.

Other than that, I want to eat an Italian hoagie every day.
  • Deli meat and for some reason blue cheese has sounded so good the past two days. I HATE blue cheese!
  • BOURBON and the occasional beer or glass of wine. I know I could have some (especially wine and beer) in moderation, but the bourbon is what I really want. There is nothing like it when the weather starts to turn and I was given a bottle as a gift 2 days after my BFP. It's been staring at me for 2 months.

  • My doc is definitely in the "everything in moderation, but try and eat as unprocessed as you can as often as possible." She was all about the heating lunch meat thing. Which is fine with me, because I like my subs toasted anyway, and she said that was plenty good enough to avoid any problems.

  • Yes yes and yes. All of it. As soon as I couldn't have it anymore, then I NEEDED it. I seriously want a sub every day with a ton of mayo on it. I said in the delivery room after birth bring me ahi tuna, a big fat publix sub and a glass of wine please and thank you. Throw in a case of Sam Adams Octoberfest that I missed too. I know everything in moderation but I can't stomach it I feel too guilty :(
  • I crave all of it and eat all of it in moderation.  This morning I had some runny poached eggs. I always eat my steak medium rare.  I had sushi for lunch the other day. I am also looking forward to our office Christmas party next month. The restaurant we go to makes the most amazing steak tartare. I also will be enjoying a small glass of wine tomorrow night.
