FTM-baby position

What position is your baby in now if you know?  Mine is transverse and I'm a little worried he won't move head down prior to delivery.  When does your Dr. say baby should be head down.  Mine said if he's not by 35 weeks (which is in 2 weeks for me) then all bets are off that he will move.

Hoping he moves in these 2 weeks!

Re: FTM-baby position

  • Mine is also transverse, but I'm only 31 weeks so my OB says it's not a big deal. Hopefully she'll decide to flip around sometime in the next few weeks.

She's head down. (She was transverse) She didn't turn until 32.5 weeks.

My OB was giving me until 36 weeks for her to turn.

  • Mine is head down... my birth class instructor says leaning forward (or doing yoga cow/cat stretches on all 4) can help give your baby room to turn. Also I would talk to the baby and explain s/he needs to turn and put his/her head down so birth is easier on both of you. I try to talk to mine most days (generally when I'm in the shower). Even if you don't believe the baby can understand you, it can help relax you and give him more room to turn, plus it's never wasted effort to talk to and bond with baby before birth :-)

  • Last week at my 30 week appointment my midwife couldn't tell, which I found kind of strange. But she said at 30 weeks it didn't matter because he/she has plenty of time to get into position.

  • Head down... I hope the baby moves for you. Maybe try looking at spinningbabies.com I have heard good things about that site!
  • Our baby girl has been pretty cooperative and has been in head down position since about 20 weeks. We saw her last week at our BPP at 33 weeks and she was still head down, facing my back , just like she should be.

Most things I've read have said baby should be in their final position around 34-35 weeks. So my fingers are crossed that she didn't decide to be a stinker and suddenly flip positions at 34 weeks.

I don't know how well they work, if at all, but there are exercises you can do to try to get baby to flip.
  • baby is head down right now, provided that she hasn't moved since my OB checked (externally, not u/s) at 30w.  (i'm 33w tomorrow...i don't think she's moved.)  DS was transverse for a long time...i think he was still transverse at 33w but had turned by 36w.

  • My baby is head down now. My OB doesn't check for position until 36 weeks. When I was pregnant with my son, he was usually head down, although a little crocked and never straight up and down. He managed to get completely transverse for a few days around 35 weeks. It was the most uncomfortable thing ever. We scheduled a postioning ultrasound for 36 weeks because of it. He managed to switch back to head down a couple days before 36 weeks.

  • He was heads down at my last ultra sound, around 29 weeks, but due to my placenta if that doesn't move I'll b having a c section anyways, so I hadn't really thought about it... I have an ultra sound in 2 weeks, at 34 weeks, to c if my placenta has moved or if we're going ahead n picking the c section date. I'm sure he will check the baby's position then too in case I can go naturally.. GL everyone! :-)
  • Mine was head down around 28 weeks, but I have no idea what he's doing now. I can't tell at all. I have another scan at 34 weeks so I'll find out then.

  • I have no clue.  I feel kicks or punches to my sides still so I thought that meant that he/she had not turned yet, but I suppose there is likely room in there to still reach out and punch or kick me.  Funny, just as I'm typing this I felt a kick or punch higher up.  Back to my original statement - I have no clue.

Usually, one give away is where you feel the hiccups. At least that is how I knew this little one switched to head down. They literally feel like they are happening in my hips or vag.

As for my son, when he went transverse, I had no idea what was happening at first. I thought he had some major weird growth spurt or something because it was so incredibly uncomfortable all of a sudden. It took me a few days to figure out what happened. It was also a huge relief when he switched back to head down. I could definitely tell the difference in that situation.

  • @saiven--  mine was at my 32 week appt I asked about transverse babies because of where I feel movement I'm sure she has to be.  The OB said she's transverse, but my OB seems to not think it's a problem until closer to 36/37w.  Other than that, idk how moms tell.  Apparently OBs can feel fairly accurately what's what and where it is?  I guess if I dealt with babies in utero on a daily basis for years it'd be possible, but who knows.

My first was head down by my 32w appt and she either stayed there or she lined back up before I was induced shortly after my 40w appt.

I only know mine because 2 days ago I felt hiccups super low near my vagina. Yesterday I felt them on the right side of my stomach above my hip.

  • Mine is too. I'll be 31 weeks on Thursday so there's still a bit of time for little one to move. Here's hoping!!

In my prenatal class they told me that swimming/prenatal aqua fit helps baby move head down.
  • I also go by the hiccups, which are usually right under my ribcage.  I can never tell if the large round lump pressing against the right side of my rib cage is a head or butt, but I know it's one of the two making her transverse.  At 32 weeks she still barrel rolls and somersaults usually once a day though, and often ends up (what I assume is) head down by the end of her gymnastics.

DS was a big somersaulter too.  He did his final one to end up head down at 36 weeks - I remember because it was SUPER uncomfortable and I was in a staff meeting at the time.

  • saiven said:
Damn baby never gets the hiccups. Come on baby! Have hiccups so I can find your face!
I don't think I've ever felt hiccups either.  Maybe I just don't know what to feel for though?
I either don't know what to feel for as far as hiccups or my babies don't get them often.  Mostly I get the "let me stretch out completely so now your belly happens to be even as wide as your hips and all flat in front instead of the bump type shape" which is what gave me the transverse idea...

As far as what's butt and head, though?  I have no idea.  haha.  They're just hard lumps in there...

  • Oh I didn't even think about hiccups! Awesome. I think he's still head down then because I always feel them right above my right hip bone.

  • According to the quickie U/S at my appointment yesterday, this little one is currently head down (34w5d). I've been worrying about this because DS was frank breech and I've had a lump in the upper right side of my belly that feels a LOT like DS did at this stage. I guess it's her butt rather than her head, though? Fingers crossed she stays in a good position.

  • Eventually I think your baby will flip and hopefully it is head down. You can check the spinning babies website for things you can do to encourage your LO to flip head down. Last pregnancy I did a lot of sitting on a yoga ball and did figure 8s to help open the pelvis. I will probably do it again this pregnancy closer to my due date to get her to move down.

Also I can never tell butt from head, but my OBs have told me she has been head down starting from at least 28 weeks. My son wasn't head down until later.

  • We're 90% sure mine is transverse too. I'll have an ultrasound at 36 weeks to check. If she's still sideways they'll do a version just before my c-section.

I saw you mentioned this on another thread and wanted to ask but forgot. Why would they need to do a version before a csection?? I've never heard of this before... seems totally unnecessary but that's why I'm not an OB.

Sorry to hijack the thread OP, just curious :)

  • Mine's transverse too. My doctor said that they will need to try a version weather I need a csection or not due to the fact that there is nothing to grab in a traditional transverse incision (when baby is in transverse). My doc mentioned that it will be necessary to cut up and down in order to grab the baby out and she does not like that. I'm 32+2 today. I'm really hoping that baby moves head down before my next scan, but I think I may have a lazy baby. My SO apparently stayed breech the entire pregnancy per his mama.

  • @ladyamanuet‌

That scarf-on-the-belly move is a Rebozo technique, I think. I was just reading about it yesterday!
I wonder if your doctor could try it @NatureLovers‌ or is it a type of version? I'm not really clear on what a version is.

  • If the baby is transverse, that means she's sideways. They cannot pull the baby out sideways through a c-sec incision. She needs to be either head first, or feet first. After talking to a couple girlfriends who went through it, more than likely they will do the version in the OR right before the c-sec, so I'll be nice and numb and won't feel anything.

All of this. I'm surprised so many don't know that an average 18-20 inch long side lying baby cannot exit sideways through a typical 4-5 inch horizontal incision. A few of my IRL friends didn't understand it either.

  • I'm no doctor but I just don't think it's true that they cannot pull the baby out sideways through a c-section. I've read up a little bit on it and I think the incision may have to be a bit longer or something, but it definitely seems possible to have the c-section even if the baby is transverse.

I just dont want some women on this board to panic if their babies are transverse and they need a c-section...

There is nothing to panic about. It is physically impossible to pull a baby out sideways through a small c-section incision. Think about the mechanics there for a second. I doubt highly my OB would tell me a version is necessary when it totally isn't.
    image
  • So now you're saying it's impossible to pull the baby out that way if the incision is too small? Right. Fine. But don't say that a c-section is impossible if the baby is transverse.  It's not. They'll just make a bigger incision.
  • My Dr. said she's scheduled C-Sections at 39 weeks and then got in there and the baby was head down.

Why can't they reach in there and turn it once your cut open and pull it out?
    ...........

I don't know, I didn't ask. But turning the baby at any point is called a version. I'm going to make the assumption they don't want to stick their hands inside to turn the baby in order to reduce the chance that they might accidentally injure internal organs maybe? I don't really know. I'll definitely have more questions if my next appt confirms she's still sideways.

    ----------------------

Not to get cray or scare anyone, but my provider literally said "it's a higher morbidity rate for mother" and this is why the adjustment should be done prior to surgery. The doc also said that when baby is lying transverse (back to mom's ribs) they can't grab anything- they would be fishing for a body through the tiny incision. I do have to say though, that this is the same provider that scared the crap out of me last time I met with her regarding my Mat21 results... so I will see what the other doc says in 2 weeks.
