Prenatal Yoga

Hi all- Just wanted to say that I started taking prenatal yoga classes at a studio near me (have never really done yoga much before) and it has been awesome!  It is such a great way to relax, gain a little more flexibility/strength, and be mindful of my baby girl.  The only thing I dislike is that we do the pigeon pose, which I find super challenging and cramps up my foot half the time. Anyone else doing prenatal yoga or exercise classes out there?

Re: Prenatal Yoga

  • Pigeon pose is my favorite. If it's uncomfortable, that means your body really needs it. It'll get easier!

I love child's pose, it makes my back feel so wonderful.

I've been a faithful barre attendee pre-pregnancy and have toned down on the cardio since BFP. But for the most part I've continued on. It shares a lot of similarities to yoga, including the breathing. When I was feeling really crappy early on it was the only night of the week I felt "whole" and slept soundly at night.
  • Yes! I have been doing a DVD at home and hope to take a local class soon. Here is the DVD I have, love, and wholeheartedly recommend:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009WY24IG?qid=1416888822&sr=8-15&vs=1

There is a separate disk for each trimester and on each there are sections for warm up, strengthening, restorative, and a quick meditation. I always feel great afterwards, even if I only do one of the 20 minute segments.
  • Yes, it's so great! And I think it really helped with l&d for my son.

  • Pigeon is my favorite as well! It feels so nice of you're able to relax into it, ask your teacher for a modification if it hurts!

I have been working on pigeon and modifying a bit-I sort of rest my butt/thigh on a brick.  It helps!
  • I love yoga, www.doyogawithme.com has a bunch of awesome free videos that are really good quality.

I think to me, pigeon pose is like eating something really healthy but unpleasant.  I know it's good for me, so I try to find ways to get it in a little bit at a time!
  • I've been doing yoga regularly for a few years and haven't yet switched to prenatal classes - still doing regular flow and just avoiding anything hot/power. As long as you listen to your body and modify poses so you don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable, it's great.
  • I've never done yoga during pregnancy but my SIL did and she nearly gave birth in the car lol so I'm a lil hesitant since my last labour was only 6 hrs..

  • I love yoga!! I've been working on my 200 YRT through corepower and will be a certified teacher next month! I've been practicing for years, but it's still necessary to modify - no deep twisting, backbends, and no lying on your belly, etc. And absolutely no Hot Yoga!

Yoga is so awesome for pregnant women! I haven't had any swelling and it really helped me with my first and beginning second trimester MS. I can tell it's becoming more difficult to practice a strong vinyasa flow as pregnancy progresses and I have just started incorporating prenatal yoga.

I'm planning on achieving my Prenatal Certification in January and I am thinking of teaching prenatal yoga - so exciting!
  • I did prenatal yoga throughout my last pregnancy until 41 weeks. The class was taught by a Doula, and she was wonderful. I highly recommend it. I haven't been to any classes this time, but I have been doing a Prenatal Yoga DVD.

  • I've been doing the shiva Rae prenatal yoga DVD a couple times a week and love it. I've also been doing prenatal Pilates which is similar. My midwife strongly encourages yoga. I plan on attending a class after the new year.
  • I just signed up for a class today! It doesn't start until the 12/7 but this thread just got me excited for it :)

Starting on Sunday and you all have me really looking forward to it. I figured it might be good to do a bit of stretching after all this turkey and pie.
