DIY Cleaning Recipes

Okay Momma's the DEFT laundry post for me thinking. Who here makes their own laundry soap or other household cleaners?

Please post your recipes!! I know I'm not the only momma who would love help saving money with an expanding household now!

If you do make your own cleanser how much does it a)cost you to make it & b)how much have you saved by making xyz?

Also if you make your own laundry detergent post if it's liquid or powder.

Re: DIY Cleaning Recipes

  • I've exclusively used this (liquid) detergent for the last 3 months or so. It's super easy- takes 5 minutes. I don't know the cost but the Dr. Bronner's Castille soap is ~$16 for 32 oz, and each batch of detergent uses 1/4 of the container, so it's ~$4 for a gallon. If you use 1/2 cup for each load, 32 loads in a gallon, 12.5 cents per load (plus negligible baking soda and salt costs). I used to buy Target brand Free and Clear and I think it was $12 for 150 oz. You use less, so it probably came to 16-17ish cents/load. Not a huge savings but it's worth it for me, and the detergent works great!

I use baking soda + a drop of dish soap + water to clean counters, stainless steel appliances, and toilet exteriors. Not sure on cost at all because it's been ages since I've bought anything else.

  • I also use vinegar and water to clean just about everything and actually prefer it over a lot of household cleaners. I usually add either grapefruit EO or the doTerra On Gaurd oil. I buy my white vinegar at Costco and two gallons is less than $5 and lasts me at least 6 months if not longer

Would love to make my own laundry detergent but currently don't.

Another vinegar + water for basic cleaning (countertops, vinegar as fabric softener in the washer, etc).

Baking soda + vinegar for drain declogger.

    Laundry Detergent:
    5 gallon paint bucket w/lid
2 boxes each: WASHING soda (not baking), Borax, OxiClean
Have DH dump it all in, close lid, roll it around outside to mix and walla.  Lasts us about 1 year.

  • I need a solution for cleaning grease splatters off the back of the stove. It's one of the things that I loathe but no matter how hard I try to wipe it down daily, it still builds up.
  • @yesiknowwhatcausesthat‌ stove splatters bug me too!!

@angeldcf I want to make powder laundry detergent but my only question is how well does it get out stains? DH's job requires him to get dirty on a daily basis. Grease, dirt on his work shirts constantly.
  • I make my own laundry detergent (powdered) with borax, baking soda, washing soda, felsnpa, oxi clean, and essential oils.

I also make my own counter/all purpose cleaner. Its made with water, vinegar, Dr bronners, borax, and essential oils.

I also make shampoo/body wash with Dr bronners, water and essential oils in a foam pump.

I've never calculated how much it costs, but my laundry soap lasts about 2 years. I mainly do it for the health benefits and safety reasons with pets and kids.

  • @maplemomma what essential oils do you put in your laundry detergent?
  • @mom2xover2002‌ I use lavender and lemon in my laundry soap. I use tea tree, oregano and lavender in my all purpose cleaner (all have fantastic anti bacterial properties, especially oregano)
