Unsure about sex of baby!?

Anyone else not convinced after the tech told them the sex of their baby??

We have an appointment Thursday (17 weeks) and she said it was a girl... I am not 100% convinced - i don't see three lines on our photo!!!? I know she's the expert and I am not though.,

Anyone have a "girl" who was really found to be a boy?! Or was told one sex and later found out it was the other??

We found out at 16w that we were having a girl. You can't see the "3 lines" per say - but you can also tell that it isn't a boy. From what I have read and seen on here - the organs are fully developed at 15w - so if you found out at 17w and the tech said you're having a girl - then you're having a girl.

  • I can relate but only because when I had my appt with my specialist at 14w2d they said girl and I'm not convinced either. But it was also early so I am waiting until next Friday for my A/S with the specialist to see if it is indeed a girl! It's hard not to just go get an elective u/s though!!

QFP Because if it's a particular sex you won't be excited?
No not at all.. I'd be excited either way for sure! Just finding out which it is is exciting and beginning the whole planning process!

  • In all reality I think that on some level everyone (even if it is way in the back of the brain) has a second thought even after the doctor tells you what they have found. I have heard stories of families who were told one sex and oops they got the other. It doesn't mean you won't be happy with it, it just means you have spent a lot of time and money on one color when it should be the other. So, in order to avoid this happening (if you don't want to take the dr's word) just buy neutral until the baby comes out. :-)

This was not meant in any way to sound snotty ladies. :-)
  • I 100% believe my ultrasound technician because she went through way more schooling on the matter than I have.

  • If I went by what my picture looks like, confirming he is a boy, I would think my baby was an elephant.. (pic is of his bum because he wouldn't get his head out of my pelvis)

..my point is, trust the tech, not what you see in your u/s pic, especially if you haven't been trained to read them!

  • I've got nothing...
  • Please google what it takes to be a certified ultrasound tech. It's not easy. What about next time the tech tells you he/she sees something, you stop and ask them to explain what they are seeing? That might help.
  • Trust the tech. For being at 17 weeks, they are very rarely wrong
  • I do I someone that they didn't know boy or girl even at birth! ( I'm sure sure it's extremely rare though) anyway the parents had to pick at birth what sex the baby would be. They chose boy. He has to get testosterone shots now that he's a young teenager. It's good they picked boy, he'd be a funny looking girl!
  • Oh God...not this again.

Pony up the cash for an elective ultrasound if you're just not feeling like this baby is a girl....

  • While I also think it's kind of crazy not to believe your tech or OB, I do have a friend who was told girl at 18 weeks and boy at 35 weeks. She had a lot of clothes to return so keep the tags on for now:)

  • To all of those who are protesting if crap like this happens..we were told my oldest child was a girl and out came a boy. Soooo..it can happen.

OP, this is a touchy topic for this board if you haven't noticed by the replies to everyone else whose posted these gender questions. If you are questioning the tech then fork out the money for another scan in a few weeks then you'll have your "for sure" answer.

  • I have now had four ultrasounds that were boys. Zero doubt. With all of them, I could tell before the tech said anything. It's probably a girl.
  • Well, OP didn't say she was unsure about the gender at least, so that's something.

Semi-related serious question - how long does an A/S scan usually take?  My friend's brother (and his wife) had one last week and I think he said they were there 2 hours?  Is that normal?

Mine took 1.5 hours. They can be lengthy depending on how baby cooperates.

Totally depends on if the baby chooses to cooperate or not. My initial anatomy scans with both boys took around an hour. FX that baby doesn't give you any grief.

  • With my first, the A/S took at least 45 minutes, if not longer. It was so uncomfortable. I almost passed out from lying on my back so long. Luckily, the tech noticed I was a bit pale and allowed me to roll on my side to finish the scan. This time around, at a different doctor, the scan took about 10 minutes. She took a bunch of still shots, and I guess did the rest of the assessment while I was waiting on the doctor. I guess it's different for everyone.
  • @redheaded14 Not sure about where you are (I'm in Canada). I'd be happy to get 30 minutes! The paper for the imaging place stated the appointment would be ~15 minutes and SO allowed in at the end (IF there's time). Another reason why I'm paying for an elective 3D/4D ultrasound. My OB/Gyn said they're understaffed and busy because of that. He said I might get one 3D picture and, if it's like my first ultrasound, some small images printed on a piece of paper. My first ultrasound was 20 minutes max. Before husband and MIL were called in, the tech took an insane amount of pictures within 5 minutes or so.

@rsaj0807 while my ARDMS specialty is Abdomen and not OB I believe the tech you spoke with was talking about the genital tubercle. That is what he was talking about when he said "angle of the dangle". A downward angle can indicate a girl while an upward angle indicates a boy. I have not practiced OB in about 8 years but I believe this is what he is speaking of. I hope this helps a bit.
