TTM about lego storage

For those of you with lots of Legos, how do you store them?

I'm thinking of just getting a large lock n lock. I need something that locks or clips closed that DD won't be able to open. DS loves the lego man head, but I don't think it locks closed.

Does anyone have it? Are the lego brand containers worth the extra money?

  • We have legos all over the place. I am not worried about DD anymore though (she just turned 3 and actually prefers the teeny legos to the duplos).

When DS's lego collection was more manageable, I got some containers from dollar tree that were plastic food storage boxes with the "locking" clips on the sides. They stay closed pretty well, and I liked being able to organize the sets separately in smaller containers, and then I just put those in larger bins in his toy organizer. We still use those, but his train table has converted to a lego table, plus I have a storage thing from Ikea with drawers and those are full of legos now.

  • We used an Ikea Trofast for Lego storage and love it, but I only have the almost 4-yr-old, no tiny hands to worry about.

  • We use a bin with locking handles. I also throw a cheap dustpan in there to help DD scoop them up. She loves that part as much as dumping them.
  • We have the Lego brand containers that look like blocks.  They don't lock but stack nicely.

The dust pan is an excellent idea!
