Tongue/lip tie evaluation tomorrow...scared

I know it's been brought up before but I'm really freaking out. We have a second opinion appointment tomorrow at a Pediatric Dentist's office who specializes in ties. I'm really thinking she'll at least have the upper lip tie revised, and possibly the tongue (posterior tie?) and I feel sick. Seriously. I was looking up after care stretching exercises on YouTube and I started to get lightheaded. The Dr. Is supposed to be really good and the procedure will be done with a laser but he takes the baby in the other room. Without the parent(s).. :(. Just really need some reassurance. For those who had their babies' ties revised how was it afterwards with doing the stretches/exercises? Did the ties reattach? I'm really afraid that I'll put her through all this just to have it reattach. Please tell me that the procedure drastically improved nursing. Just need to hear it again :) Thanks!

Re: Tongue/lip tie evaluation tomorrow...scared

  • We had both a lip tie (laser) and a moderate tongue tie (scissors) repaired at 10 days old. I will not lie, doing the stretching exercises suuuuucked, but it was only 10 days. I haven't taken a look in there in a bit but I don't think things have reattached.

Nursing was immediately better. So much faster. It took a good week and a half to improved her latch, but by 2 weeks post procedure things were good.

She didn't gain well in the 10 days after, probably because of the stretching, but since then she's doing very well.

We also had it done at a dentist that specializes in correcting ties. It took not even 5 minutes, and once the dentist picked her up for cuddles she stopped crying.

  • Thanks so much. Did you also have to do suck training/exercises to teach her the correct way to express milk or did she just 'get it' after the procedure? Isla isn't transferring milk well because her tongue isn't undulating properly when she nurses so I'm wondering if it will just come to her or will I have to put a lot of work into it with her. Also, did they have you take her to a chiropractor or OT as well? There just seems to be so much involved with this. Thanks again!

  • One of our exercises was to have her suck on our finger while drawing it out to help her get her tongue out. Other than that we didn't do any specific suck training. The LC who first dx'd the tie said she was only getting her tongue out over her gums about half the time before the correction.

We did not see a chiro, but I've heard it can help.

It's so so worth it to get it fixed. It might be a few weeks of a lot of work, but once things are healed, it will be so much better.

  • My LO was clipped at 6 days old. Wasn't told of a chance of reattachment or needing to do exercises, and the procedure was quick, easy, and she didn't even cry. BFed well right after. Now I'm having other issues and have been EPing, so I can't comment on feeding improvement in the long run as of yet. We had it done by an ENT. F/u appointment made if necessary.
    Don't regret it one bit.

  • We had ds tongue tie clipped at 2 weeks. We didn't have to do any kind of exercises after. It helped his latch so much! He is bottle fed and still wasn't able to latch and wasn't gaining weight. A week and a half later he had gained a pound and a half.

I was in the room when they clipped his and it wasn't bad at all. I was actually shocked at how simple it was. Ds didn't even cry (I guess they normally do). I didn't want to be in the room because I usually ugly cry uncontrollably but it was so simple that I was fine.
  • Thanks everyone! I've been a wreck. It went well but I was a total mess. Crying in the waiting room, felt faint, the whole nine yards. He said she did well and she wasn't crying when he brought her to me though you can tell she had been. Her little lip was all swollen. She did try to nurse right away but it was a bit awkward due to the swelling and discomfort I'm guessing. She was in a lot of pain later on :( Crying and refusing to eat. I gave her some Tylenol and that helped enough for her to nurse. I've done the stretches twice so far and they weren't as bad as I thought (so far) I think it's because I'm trying to ice my finger first and I'm applying orajel naturals but I'm afraid I'm just not applying enough pressure to the surgical sites. So far I don't really notice a big difference in nursing. She's nursing okay but that's because I've been kind of engorged for some reason and she usually doesn't fall asleep when nursing when my breasts are like this. The Dr. Made it sound like I need to get an IBCLC to help take us along the rest of the way. Really can't afford it but will look into it. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and sorry for the book!

I hope you see lots of improvement in the coming days! If an IBCLC is too pricy, is there a local LLL chapter you could contact? The Leaders help moms for free. Good luck!
