UPS I hate you

Ok, here's the deal. My SIL had a mc earlier this year and her baby's due date was this month. I sent her a care package (with a gift, a card, and her favorite candy) and she should have received it at the beginning of Nov. I got a call from UPS last Wed saying that they delivered the package, but it was delivered late because UPS sorted it incorrectly. Well, I just talked to SIL today and she never received it! So first they sort it wrong, then deliver it late, and apparently delivered to the wrong address. I called UPS and they need the tracking # from the receipt--of course when I heard that it was delivered I threw away the receipt.
 
Am I pretty much just screwed? Or is there some way that they can find out the date/time/location of delivery...I tried asking UPS about it and it sounded like if I don't have the receipt there's nothing they can do. Which seems crazy, don't they keep records in their computers?
This is half vent, half "is there anything I'm not thinking of".  I'm really disappointed she hasn't received it, especially now that her baby's due date has already come and gone :(

    This really sucks and I hope you can get this entire thing resolved.  Surely they could look up your information somehow.  This is crazy!


    Yeah, I just went to the UPS location nearby. It's frustrating since it was such a personal gift! I'll call them again. It seems to me they should have a way to look up the info...but even if they did have the tracking # I'm sure it would just say that it has been delivered to the correct address even though it wasn't. Urg!!

    If they delivered it to the wrong address, the driver probably just scanned it as "delivered" and obviously thought he/she was at the correct address, so I am not sure there is anything you can do. I think if a package is insured you can maybe get some money for it but otherwise I am not sure- I've had a package go missing and it never reappeared. I want to know where all of these lost things end up...

    Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too...I would hope that whoever would've gotten the package would either take it to the right place or take it to UPS and tell them. If they opened the package, then they would clearly be able to see that this was for a grieving mom. So I'm pretty pissed if they opened it and either kept it or tossed it

    @Pintobean39  I don't think so...but I don't remember. I sent it on Halloween so it's been a few weeks. I don't remember what information they asked for..

    I would call the 1-800 number they were able to get me my tracking number once when I didn't have it.

    Update: Well, I went in to the store since nothing was getting resolved over the phone. They were able to find the receipt in less than 2 minutes. Of course, after tracking it, they said that records show it was delivered on the 10th. So he must have dropped it off at the wrong address. They're going to file a loss/damage report and try to refund me for everything that was in it. That's fine and dandy but the timing is what was so important :(  I'll send her another package but feel like it isn't going to be the same. Of all the packages to lose!
