BF and late period after a year of regular ones

Hey everyone I've got an issue and I was wondering if anyone has experienced this-- my period returned a year ago (while still EBF) and hasn't been a day late since and I've been tracking my ovulation, which has also been regular. I'm on cycle 2 of TTC and this month my period is now 6 days late but I'm getting BFNs. The first week of October my 17 month old was sick and nursed a lot more than usual. Is it possible that the 1 week of increased breastfeeding threw my cycle off? I don't think I've nursed her more that week than when she was EBF, but it definitely increased (back to normal now).

Thank you. I tried to google this but general info came up and was just looking for other people's experiences.

  • How are you tracking ovulation exactly? Sounds like your method was wrong this time.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

I'm using OPKs. My cycles are longer than normal-- 42 days. And I'm sorry, I meant the first week of October is when my toddler was sick.
  • Looks like the opks were wrong! It happens. Maybe because of breast feeding, but maybe for no reason. If you really want to be sure when you ovulate, you have to chart your basal body temperature. See Fertilityfriend.com.

  • Thanks, but that doesn't explain my late periods. I'm just going to wait it out and test again in a few days.
  • Sometimes you can have positive OPKs and not ovulate.  Your body gears up for ovulation and then it doesn't happen.  Unless you are charting and confirmed ovulation.  You might have ovulated later in your cycle or not yet.

You ovulated later than the test said, therefore your period is later than you expected it.

Try reading this book: Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It will explain how the length of your cycle is determined by the date of your ovulation.
