2nd Baby Talk... what to buy new?

I know this was posted back when a lot of other S12'ers were having their #2, but I'm hoping someone can refresh my memory.

I'm wondering about bottles and pacifiers in particular. Do I need new nipples for the bottles? Brand new pacis or can I just sterilize DS's old ones?

Can I use our 2+ yr old Pampers that are sitting in storage for when C outgrew them?

Anything you did differently the 2nd time around that was helpful? Thanks!

  • New nipples and pacifiers for sure. I think that's all that needs to be new, we did get seasonally appropriate clothing in nb size because DD2 was a summer baby.

  • I need some new bottles. I'll get new pacis. I have a stock pile of diapers left from G that I will use. Everything else will be used.
  • This content has been removed.
  • I bought new nipples, & a new jar of triple paste because Nancy's was really low.
Other than that, we got a lot of hand me down clothes or reused everything.

  • I bought new nipples & a couple new bottles b/c my old ones looked dingy.

new tubing & membranes for my pump.

    some girly outfits, blankets, sheets.

    new crib, furnishings & decor.

    new baby bathtub

I would check the old diapers to see if they feel hard/clumpy. If not, I would use them. We had some diapers that were stored away in an attic cubby & I guess from extreme temps, they got messed up, so we chucked them.

ah, yes, "crunchy" is the word I was looking for! lol

I didn't buy new nipples or bottles.
I bought a second seat for our Britax, double BOB, nursery furniture and decor and diaper and wipes to supplement what was left over.
We didn't know the gender so I didn't buy clothes until after delivery.

  • Oh and baby bath thing I could use in the tub with them together. My old one was to big for that.

  • Definitely new nipples and pacifiers. I used diapers that I had saved from when DS was smaller.

The only other things we bought new were clothing and things like a double stroller. Also, I got an Ergo, which I never had with DS. Best purchase ever.

  • Look around Carter's room and see what you used as an infant that you still use so you will need a second. Like I bought a second changing pad and diaper caddy with all the stuff (my kids are 2u2 though), second sound machine, crib sheets (James stayed in his crib but I needed them for daycare too), second daycare bag, second nose frida. I also found a swaddle that I really liked when James was a bit older so I bought a couple in newborn size and another bigger one.

I did a different brand of bottles and paci. James was still using his paci and I was hoping to make them look different enough that James wouldn't steal Leo's. Also, James sippy cups were his old bottles with a different nipple piece so again, didn't want to cause confusion so went with something that looked totally different.

DH said he didn't want Leo in any hand-me-downs for important picture type events - holidays, meeting family... So I did buy some new cute clothes.

  • I have to buy furniture and stuff but I'm not buying new....I'll look at CL for some stuff. I'll need a high chair. Again, not looking at new unless there are some amazing deals in the next month or so with Christmas coming.
  • I'm not buying anything (so I think) except:

    Nipples and pacis

Burp rags, because where the F are all my burp rags

A mattress, because W's is going into a toddler bed and the crib is going into the baby's room

And my questions is.... do I need to have a double stroller?  Which one is recommended?  I plan to take lots of walks but W likes to walk.  I could always do baby in my beco carrier and W in the stroller if she gets tired.  Hmm......

I plan on getting one. Not sure I will need one right away but I'd like to have one. I really like the Contours one that flips all different directions. I'll keep our single to use for G and wear the baby for a while.

I think it really depends on you. 90% of the time I take our single and a carrier, we have a stroller board on it and it is definitely enough. I do have a double, but it is a jogger and we've only used it when DH and I took both kids and both dogs on long (1-2 hour) walks. I know that it will get used daily next summer because I like running/jogging and it only happens if I take the kids with me. I think you can probably wait and see if the kids are more than 2 years apart in age.

  • On my list of things to get is a mini ergo or something for W to have for her dolls.  :)  Priorities!!!
that would totally be a great Christmas gift for G with a new baby doll. I'm not sure I'll be able to stick to this need/want/read/wear thing...
  • Well, I definitely didn't do the want/need/read thing though I think it's a good idea.  I got W play food, play dishware, a lawn care set (mower, leaf blower, etc.)... and I think there's something else.  I might save the ergo carrier for a special gift for her in Feb when 2.0 comes.

Right? I've found them on CL for $125 or so in good condition. I'll need one for MIL as well.
  • I like having a double. We have 2 which is not necessary but have been extremely useful. I have a Maclaren umbrella double that is fantastic at the airport. I can contain both kids, it is small, and I can slide the roller suitcase handle through the split handles on the stroller (I felt like a freaking genius when I figured that out!). The double jogger is a beast but we use it almost every weekend. DH takes the kids to play frisbee golf on Saturday mornings and James eventually gets tired and wants to ride. I bought both used for a good price and know that I can resell them for close to what I paid so except the garage space they take up, totally worth it.

  • We actually have two double strollers -- one is a jogger and one is a sit and stand. They serve different purposes, although if I had to do it again, we honestly could have skipped the sit and stand because most places that we've taken that we could have either just brought the jogger or done single umbrella stroller plus Ergo.

I had considered this arrangement for our upcoming trip because we don't have a double that will fly easily, especially since we are renting car seats.
Then ... We went to the zoo this weekend with baby in Ergo and toddler walking. She loves to walk. NEVER EVER EVER again.
I ordered a double umbrella stroller yesterday after spending Monday picking one.
They each need a place to put their butts when we go places.

An M14 mom got a Contours one, I forget the exact model but she couldn't use her Graco infant seat with it because it reclined it to much. When she contacted the company they just referenced the page where it said its comparable with Graco infant seats. So, don't take the tags off until you've tested all that stuff!

  • All I bought new was nursing bibs (because the velcro had worn off,) more woombies, new pacis and bottle nipples, (which in retrospect was a waste since she never took to the bottle,) and a joovy ultralight too double stroller, which I love.
  • When I was pg with Will, I got a few new basics-wash cloths, burp cloths, a new special blanket and lovie, pacifiers, but not bottles or nipples. I was Team Green with Jack and never got to pick out any cutsie baby boy outfits myself(we were gifted a ton of clothes after he was born), so I was excited to get to do some shopping last time.
We also bought a double stroller, new crib, dresser for Jack's new room, a booster seat for Jack. I felt like it was a short list in the grand scheme but bigger items.
::sigh:: this time I've bought a coming-home outfit, a couple of new fleece sleepers, 2 soft blankets, a pack of wash cloths and a lovie.
Still Need: a hat from Etsy for pictures, a new changing pad as ours has stuffing coming out, one of those shower cap-style warm car seat things, and diapers.
Want: a video monitor (we just have the sound one now) and a white noise machine for the boys since they will be bunking together soon.

Man, I bought a ton of stuff.

    Def new nipples and pacis.

New baby furniture, bibs, burp clothes, swaddles, a few wash clothes and towels, double stroller, new car seat, another sun shade and mirror for the car, shopping cart cover, boppy covers, changing pad covers.

I traded all my girl baby clothes and blankets for boy stuff with a few friends.

I didn't have a thing that wasn't pink. It was like starting over.

This was kind of us too. Except other way around b/c we had a boy first, then a girl.

@hmp1‌ which mcclaren double ? We have a single and I don't love it-it's wobbly. I'm curious if the double feels the same way?

You didn't ask me but we have a Techno XLR single and its defienly not wobbly. Neither is our double which in the Tein Techno, so far it's been wonderful.

Hmm.. couldn't tell you the model # of ours.. my SIL gave it to me. It's only 3 or 4 years old at most and she bought it brand new. Maybe my nephew bent the wheels? She used it much longer than she probably needed to with him...

Twin Techno. Not wobbly at all. I would call McClaren about your wobbly stroller.
