Final bed question

tinyhumantoetinyhumantoe member
edited November 2014 in September 2012 Moms
Ok, I'm ready to order my bed.  Both benches I like are "charcoal" and are made by a different company than the beds, so fabrics are not likely to match.

This one is $285
https://www.baxtonstudio.com/resize/Shared/Images/Products/TSF-71005OTTOMNN1.JPG?lr=t&bw=550&w=550&bh=550&h=550
This one is $185 and is 10" longer than the one above (62") which would probably be better for a king bed, which is 76" wide
https://img1.wfrcdn.com/lf/8/hash/452/13005346/1/Linon-Isabelle-Upholstered-Bedroom-Bench.jpg

So......... do I just take a shot and get the "charcoal" colored bed, knowing the colors will be off a bit?  I don't think it's that big of a deal because the bed doesn't have a footboard, so it's not like it will be right up against it.

Or do I get the lighter color bed and have the darker bench?  I'm afraid that it will be too much color contrast because my walls are tan and my built in is a warmer wood, and windows have a white trim.

Oh yah, my bedding is white.  TIA for the help!

  • So the reason we need the bench is because my white comforter is for looks only, and it will be pulled down at night to the bench and we will use a quilt that is under it.

So this is what I'm thinking, but I have an antique table and night stand in there and it totally doesn't go.  Ahhhhh.  I suck at decisions :(

Why not go for a pop of color? That's what I was trying to convince DH of before I realized he didn't have enough room.

  • Man, I am so annoyed with myself over this whole thing.  Grr.

I like this sconce if I do the dark grey bed.

There's also a silver sconce from urban outfitters that's $50/ea and those would go well.  I just really don't think any of this is going to look good with the built in I have.  I'll try to take a pic tomorrow.  We are only going to live here another couple years so I don't really care.

  • I'm a sucker for wheels on legs, makes a piece feel instantly expensive. 2 and 2 are my fav. I think the bench looks enough lighter to avoid looking like you tried and failed to match. That would be my fear with 2 and 1. I'm on my phone, does the nail head trim match pretty well?

I highly recommend using Annie Sloan paint to redo your current pieces. I used it for a vanity and my kitchen and have 3 pieces getting done next.

  • @hmp1 do you have any photos of your annie sloan paint projects?  I think I am going to paint my two antique tables and then "dip" (i.e. tape and spray paint metallic silver) the feet.  Kind of like this, but not bring the dip as high.

  • @hmp1 you are awesome!  I'm now settled on the dark bed, but torn between pinstripe and the darker bench.  I went and looked at some benches today and I have to say I'm disappointed in how short 52" is.  But I am doing this on a budget, so oh well.

I have a picture of my built in.  Turns out the 'counter' portion of it is dark gray.  Carpet is cream and walls are tan.  I hate the tan walls, but we aren't painting, so I think the darker bed is the way to go.

    Forgive my mess.

  • The not done kitchen. Top is pure white (I started with Old White but it looked too yellow next to my white trim), the bottom is Paris Grey (I have added another coat and it looks less blue now). Counters are Graphite that I added glitter dust to (this was taken before I put on the seal).

  • Continuing on my house tour  :D I can't find my tape measure but I walked off our bench to be about 48-50" so you can see what that size looks like with a king size bed.

  • @hmp1‌ do you think any of the colors you chose would go okay with my ugly counters?
Totally. I would do Linen Grey cabinets. I was trying to lighten up our kitchen as much as possible. I wanted to paint my counters white but I chickened out and went dark, but that is why I went with the lighter color grey. Overall, I like the Linen Grey better than the Paris Grey though.

Annie Sloan paint, added teal and silver glitter dust, sealed with about 7 coats of Minwax Polycrylic Gloss.
Here is a better picture of the counters. The glitter is subtle.

  • We have a bench at the end of our bed. I like that it isn't the same height as the mattress. To me it looks nicer.

Yep (or floors) and nope. It was super easy. I only used it for the counter tops not the cabinets because I want the cabinets to keep the soft look of the Annie Sloan paint. I read a blog about a guy that used the Annie Sloan wax on his counter tops and it looked great but takes 28 days to cure and I didn't have time for that. I used a foam cabinet roller and a foam brush for the corners. It dries really fast.

There is a product that bars use that is super glossy, like glass. It looks beautiful but seemed like a total pain in the ass to do so I decided against it.

  • It's called EnviroTex. If I didn't have that 4" backsplash I might have tried it but it seemed really hard to get right on a vertical service. Also, I don't own a blow torch and the point was to do a cheap update of my kitchen (not counting the new faucet this was a $200 update!) because my marble counter top budget is growing at a snails pace.

    Soooooooo........

I ordered samples from the manufacturer.  The light grey is gorgeous and actually more of a silver, but it is very light and can't really hold its own against tan.  I am ordering the charcoal, which I was afraid was too black.  It is, in fact, charcoal.  It's reallly pretty!
    https://oi62.tinypic.com/aa83m0.jpg

So now I wonder if I should order now with my 10% off coupon that expires 11/26, or wait until black Friday.  Thoughts?
