These are some hats I made for some special little girls for Halloween. And a black, gray, and white chevron afghan modeled by my DS. It isn't finished yet.
As for making gifts, there's nothing on my list at the moment. I just don't feel motivated this year after homemade the last few years and lack of inspiration. I've just been doing a whole bunch of selfish sewing (just finished a cape jacket last night!). But I do sew, knit, crochet, paper craft, and a whole slew of other things.
Oh, I am making a mesh wreath for a coworker, but it's commissioned, not a gift.
@Chad5285 When I researched a while ago what the most efficient crochet stitch was (least amount of yarn + quickest to finish) I came across references that a (US) half double crochet was the winner. It also has the best drape I think. I did a double crochet blanket with I think a J hook, and my bare toes get caught in it sometimes. HDC isn't as 'holey'.
Kellybenelly83 Here is an example of what I think you are thinking of: https://www.moms-crochet.com/crochet-hat.html If you want a smoother top, crochet in the round. You could also make it more floppy/dangly (like a stocking hat?) by making it longer.
Tip: Always count your stitches, even if you are just doing rectangles. If I don't, sometimes I miss one when turning and then it gets wonky. If working in rounds, I use all manner of stitch markers from short bobby pins to a small piece of yarn. Good luck!
PS am I the only one that noticed the bottle of siracha in the background of the kitty and blanket picture?
I went on a yarn "diet" when we got married and I've only been buying for special projects and destashing for 2.5 years. There may or may not be a huge tub behind the couch still full + yarn hidden in closets. I worked at Joanns in college and used my discount. I love ravelry and Pinterest. They have both helped me look outside single/double crochet.
I would love to learn to knit. I can crochet but I'm not currently working on anything. I have some of my mom's old books I am looking through looking for a pattern or something to make. I'm thinking of making my one MIL (I'm lucky and have 2 MILs, lol one is DH mom and other is Step mom who helped raise him, table cloth would be for step mom) a table cloth with the little yarn, something pretty and lacy looking. I have my mom's one book that has some pretty snow flak patterns in it also, so I'm thinking of making some of them for my Christmas tree.
MH has no idea that in his very own closet (because God forbid he actually put laundry away, or move his airsoft guns) I have a box of yarn. It's for Christmas, but he'd still probably flip out. I like yarn, and I like money. If it's good yarn, for a lot less than it normally is, then all bets are off. I'll make something with it. Eventually.
@bishopsrook - I get excited when I can use 50% off coupons on Caron simply soft. I already bought some for the 3rd project on my list.
@Rooskie87 I actually found some being discontinued at a mom and pop yarn shop at one of the local farmers markets for like a dollar a piece ((I KNOW RIGHT)). I haggled with her for a while to buy all she had left (16 balls, 4 colors) for 10 bucks if I bought the circular needles I had originally come for in the first place. Needless to say, I was pleased and MH was less pleased. I made a Settlers of Catan blanket with it though. He was pleased by that.
@bishopsrook - sweet deal! I'm never that lucky! You'll have to upload a picture. We love Settlers in our house!

ETA: Also agree with double yarn + big fat hook.
