Name Thread, with an unexpected twist ;)

So I thought it might be interesting to see what or who you and your SO's are named after.

I'm named after a Bible character because my dad was a pastor. All 3 of my brothers are also named after bible characters, too, so if I'd had another brother, we'd have had all the gospels, lol.

My dh is named after Kenny Rogers. No joke, and what's even funnier is his family lives in Peru... His dad just liked Kenny Roger's voice.

Re: Name Thread, with an unexpected twist ;)

  • I'm named after the Allman Brother's song "Sweet Melissa" because my dad loved that song.

If I had been a boy (parents were team green throughout the pregnancy) I would have been Matthew, chosen as a Biblical name by my mom. Instead, a friend of mine from middle school who was born a few hours after me in the shared hospital room by his parents and my parents was given the name Matthew because they only had girls names picked out and ended up with a boy. They'd heard my parents talking about it and decided they liked it, so when my parents didn't need it, his mom asked my mom if it would be okay if they "stole" it :)

  • I was named after my father's sister.  My middle name (before I changed it) was the same middle name as my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. We are all first born daughters of first born daughters. If I was a boy I would have been Charles William the third. Thankfully my brother got saddled with that one!
  • Im named after Stevie Nicks supposedly.. Stefanie Nicole. I guess both my parents loved her. But my parents really screwed me in life by spelling my first name with an "F"... it's wrong on everything even after I correct people a million times.
  • I was Emily Allison all the way until the hospital ride if I was a girl. My mom decided she also liked my name, with the middle name after her best friend's middle name. My parents decided to wait and see which one I looked like after I was born, and my dad decided I looked more like my name and not an Emily.

DH's family is Italian and everyone tried to convince MIL to name him Albert after her father, but she refused. I think she just liked his first name and did use the "Al" prefix in his middle name to honor her father but not name him after her father.

  • My dad had a name picked out for his future daughter (me) since he was a young teenager. He said he meet the most beautiful little girl with my name and decided that when he had a daughter that's what he wanted her named. He was 30 when I was born. As for my DH, he was named after his grandfather. Our DS is named after his grandfathers as well. His first name is my FIL and mn is my dad. DD will be after my mom for fn and MIL for mn.
  • I'm named after my great-grandmother...but my mom spelled the name wrong lol.

  • I was named after the OB who delivered me.
  • Me - my first name was a name my aunt came up with and never got to use because she had boys. Middle name I have the 15th generation of, my DD has the 16th.

Hubby - first name after an uncle that passed before he was born. Middle is his fathers first name. Our DS has the same middle name.

  • My middle name is my grandmother's name name and my mother's name. It is also DD's middle name :-)

My husband is 33 and just found out a few months ago that his middle name was his great grandfather's name. He had no idea and grew up hating his middle name.

  • My chosen name originates from a Latin phrase. I love it. My given name, my mom heard it the week before she had me and decided that was the name. I don't like it. I was supposed to be Samantha, after my great-grandfather Samuel. I like Samantha better.

But my chosen name suits me best.

DH wasn't named after a relative. MIL heard/saw the name and liked it. I *might* have come from a character on a TV show.

  • My first name is my maternal grandmother's middle name. She passed away less than a year before I was born so I was named in honor of her.

My middle name is the first name of my parents' friends' oldest daughter. She is a few years older than me and my parents thought she was the cutest kid (my dad claims she was the reason he decided that having kids was an ok idea. Lol)
  • My parents just thought my name was pretty. Little did they know every other baby girl born that year would be named the same thing.

My husband is the 5th of 7, and apparently his name was just an afterthought. I think they just went with a very Irish Italian Catholic (which is what he is) name. I guess when he was younger he hated his name, and tried to get people to call him Anthony.

I was named after a character in a movie.  My parents were out on a date and decided if they ever had a girl, that'd be her name.

DH's parents originally chose another name for him, but their neighbors/friends had a baby a few weeks before and "took" that name. Three days after being born, they finally decided on a biblical name. It suits him much better than the original choice.

  • I love all of these. :) I always hated my name because it sounded like an old lady name. As an adult, though, I'm glad my parents chose something a little different.

  • DH is a junior and has his dad's name.

My parents just liked my name, I guess, no special meaning behind it. As a kid I was the only one with my name and never liked it because it was so odd, but now that it has become more mainstream I appreciate it a little more. All my brothers and sisters and I (there are 5 total) start with 'B' and our MNs are all family last names, so my MN is my grandmother's maiden name.

  • I was named after the brand of cowboy hat my dad was wearing when I was born (no my name is not Stetson) They got a little creative with the spelling though, unfortunately.
  • My mom picked out names before she had my older brother or myself (so she's lucky she ended up with 1 boy and 1 girl!).  She heard them in a toilet paper commercial - true story.

My DH is named after his dad.  Our LO will be given the same name.

Omg, I love the story of your hubby's name, that's so funny.

  • My parents planned to call me Rebecca, but then after the delivery my mom said, "That was a 9 pound baby and I'm picking the name: It's Megbmeg." My dad got to pick the spelling, which is how I ended up with a slightly oddly spelled name.

And I don't have a middle name. @babar78 my 4 siblings all do, so your DH is not alone ;) I always tease my mom that she just ran out of ideas by the time she got to baby #5, and made her impromptu name switch. Why didn't they just use Rebecca as a MN??

@hollycn That's funny that you were named after the OB. She must have been impressive! I actually love my OB's first name, but I'd feel too weird using it.

@AJIrishMama yay rolling stones :) There's some good possibilities there...

I go by my first and middle name - first name is after my great aunt who my mother was very close with, and middle name is after my dad's sister who died a few days after she was born. I love my name and the meaning behind it! I'm also grateful I was a girl - if I was a boy, I would have been named after my uncle and my grandfather and would have been William Ray, but my parents were planning to call me Billy Ray. Yikes!

On a very similar note, my name is Baylie they almost gave me a feminized version of my uncles name as a middle name. My name would have been Baylie Rhae. Also we're from Kentucky. Billy and Baylie are pronounced VERY close to one another.

Haha, maybe that's the secret to my parent's divorce too...

  • My paternal grandmother had 4 boys and always wanted a girl named Gina Marie.  On my parents first date my dad asked my mother if she like the name for a girl and she said yes - so here I am!  Grandma is the only one who calls me that, I am G to the rest of the family unless they are yelling at me...DH is a 3rd and baby boy will be a 4th.
  • i'm named after my mom, who's named after her mom (all first name). my middle name was an aunt's name for both my mother and father's side of the family.

my dh has a common male name (biblical) that his parents just liked. his middle name is his father's first name.
  • My mom named me after a famous 1930s actress because she starred in the first English movie my mother ever watched. My FIL chose my husband's name from his favorite character on a telenovela he was watching at the time.

  • I was named after the archangel Gabriel. My mom liked the other archangel, Michael, more but I wasn't a boy. After realizing I was a girl she wanted Maria-Gabriela to be my first name (Spanish is her first language so it's a lot easier for her to say than it looks), but because we lived in the south she was worried everybody with a country drawl would pronounce it "Muh-REE-uh", which she thought sounded really ugly... She of course would have been right because well, that's kind of the general pronunciation for Maria. So my actual name was her third choice.

DH just has a common biblical name. His younger brother does as well and was purposefully given the same initials.
  • My uncle chose my name, which means 'fully fulfilled' in my parents' native language--my mom wanted three kids and I was the third. I'm not sure if there's a story behind DH's first name, apart from it being of Irish origin due to his mother's heritage, as are his two younger sisters' names. His middle name, James, is a family tradition on his mother's side, one we'll keep if LO is a boy. We will not follow the part of the tradition that derives nicknames such as Jim-o from the name. I tease DH all the time that there's no way we're calling our LO Jim Bob or some such nonsense to get a rise out of him.

My brothers are 6 and 7 years older than I am. My mother allowed them to name me after a pet chicken they had that had died.  Now my husband calls me chicken. My middle name is after my grandmother.

My husband and his brothers all have very strong catholic names. The first comment from his grandmother over our name choice was that it was not catholic enough,
