Temp Question

TL; DR
Help me prove my DH wrong! He's been driving me insane!! We usually set our temperature to 65 overnight. I've always been ok with this until my BFP. I'm trying to get it through his thick skull that come Jan. when baby is here...it cannot be that cold in the house!! He seems to think baby will be just fine. Am I crazy and uneducated? I feel 65 is a bit extreme for a newborn. I've been trying to get him to turn it up a degree at a time but he's so stubborn and we argue. Last night he turned it down to 63 and I flipped my lid. I told him he's going to be in for a rude awakening when it suddenly needs to be 10 degrees warmer in the house with a newborn so finally my question is...what temp is ideal (if there's such a thing?)

Does he like 65 degrees when he is only able to wear a sleeper and no blankets? I think that's key...baby's shouldn't have blankets in their crib, which is why it needs to be warmer. If I remember correctly, my sister had her house around 70-72 overnights when hers was very small.

With our house set to 68, it usually keeps our daughter's room at 70. Even with her fleece swaddler her hands get chilly at night. It doesn't bother her and they are not so cold that I'm worried. We do have to be mindful that she's always in long sleeves, otherwise she gets really cold at that temp.

We are current working on changing ours from 65 to 68. We are doing it so Thanksgiving it will get bumped to 66, Christmas 67 and then 1st of February 68. Then you have time to adjust.

I will admit to using both of these things as my reasoning, but we both know that shit is getting bumped big time in a few months. We'll leave it at 68 unless our March is a total shit storm of wintry weather.

It was the same in our house pre-baby #1. My husband likes to sleep in the cold so I just put on extra blankets. Once Willa came into the picture the heat got bumped up to 68 degrees on the upstairs thermostat and it might be even higher on the main floor unit.

Everything changes when a baby arrives. Everything!

The only thing I'm worried about is our stupid one-zone house...so the upstairs can be perfectly toasty and the living room is way chillier....we might be playing around with the thermostat depending on where baby is at the time.

Also, hats for newborns are key!

I have a few hats, looks like she'll be wearing one at all times! We do have a space heater that DH uses in the basement when he plays video games. Might be bringing that upstairs for during the day...

70 was our compromise. Our house now stays at 74 because it's a good temp for us and DS.

This is my husband..it was 20 degrees this week and he had on shorts, tshirt, and no socks. The funny thing is he is ICE COLD. I keep reminding him that once the baby is here we have to keep the heat ON and at a reasonable temp.

If you keep it at 65 you'll just want to make sure baby has thick pjs and a warm swaddle or sleep sack.

We typically keep the thermostat at 60 day and night. We don't mind the cold, and i love sleeping all snuggly! a lot of it is a money issue, so we won't be doing any incremental bumping up, but planning on going up to 70 once he's here!

I never thought about a swaddle me at night...I'm so blonde at times. Hopefully I can get him on board with 68 at least. Long sleeve sleeper w/swaddle.

We will definitely be swaddling. We keep the house at 65 during the day and 58 at night. I can't sleep when it's hot. I'm struggling now and sleep with only a sheet!

We keep ours set at 73. I would like it colder when I sleep but with little ones in sleepers with no blankets, they need to be warm.

Our instructor at birthing class said 65 was ideal. If you put baby in warm jammies and then a swaddler they should be fine. Apparently over heating is linked to SIDS. Our nursery is in the coldest room in the house so we probably will bump up the heat. We sleep at 66 degrees and 68 during the day.

I have been horrible with changing the thermostat since I've been pregnant. If I'm cold, I turn it up, if I'm hot, I turn it down. Or sometimes I jump in a hot bath. I am surprised DH hasn't complained about my nonsense lately. We put plastic on our windows just last week, so hopefully that will fix the uneven heating issues. We might have a leak by our french door, so DH has to look into that.

I think we keep it at 66 or 67. Depending on how hot the baby's room gets, that might change. Or if we have another polar vortex here (which we are on our way).

I feel like sweating just reading some of these posts! 74 degrees in the house? Yikes!! This winter, we installed a pellet stove, so the main floor of the house gets into the high 60s but on the second floor with the bedrooms we don't even put the heat on! I am SO hot all the time! I sleep in 55 degrees with a fan on. It's going to be a huge adjustment for us to put the heat up to 68 or 70 in the bedrooms. Last winter the price of oil was SO expensive. We have a pretty big house with very high ceilings, and we were spending around $700 a month keeping the house at 63 the entire winter. If money weren't an issue maybe we'd keep it higher. I don't know how some of you ladies do it!!

Honestly, my skin is cracking just imagining 74*! Interesting about 65-70.....maybe we can compromise at 66-67, though I guess it will depend on what the weather is like when they're actually here. Now I'm REALLY thankful she's not due any earlier!

I think I just saw the clouds part and heard the angels singing...it would be fantastic if I don't have to fit with DH over temperature.

When I was doing SIDS research with my first I found that most sources suggested anywhere from 65-70. So you both would be right. People, including babies, sleep better when it's slightly cooler. Having the room to warm can also increase the risk of SIDS. I think for us we found that about 68 was the perfect temp.

We have a Nest thermostat and program it to be at 72 when we're home and 67 when we're gone or asleep. The house starts heating up about an hour before we get up in the morning and automatically cools down when the Nest sees that we are gone (using geolocation on our phones). We live in Alabama so more mild than most of the country. We use electric heating, but used to have gas which we set lower because it feels hotter. I can't even imagine keeping the house at 65, that seems extremely cold.

Do you use space heaters? I would at least look into a space heater to use in the room you are in at the time.

Edit: our bedrooms are upstairs so even though the heat goes to 68 at night, it is 70ish upstairs. I still use blankets.

That's like 18 Celsius. We keep our house at 15 during the night so I don't think 18 is too cold for baby!

My pedi told us that 71-73 was ideal for a newborn in the winter bc its hard for them to regulate their temps so young. We had onsies, a swaddle and a newborn cap and she was born in Nov. then we had the house at 71 and a space heater in her room for the night bc we couldnt sleep with it that warm

I have in my head that it should be between 68 and 72 for newborns. I assume I read that when DS was a baby.

This. Overheating is linked to SIDS. They don't know if it is because people put their babies in too many layers, put blankets on, are in too hot of a room or all of those things, but our baby monitors showed the room temp and we kept our room (where she slept when she was very small) or her room between 66-68 degrees all the time and she slept with a onesie on and in a aden/anais swaddle, no hat.

@sugahcookie01 you're not dumb my love. a cooler house is less risk of the above.

This thread is so funny to me. Our thermostat is set to 75 because it is the AC that comes on, not the heat! The cold air coming out of the vents seems to keep the air cooler than the opposite, if that makes sense?

We have been keeping it at 68 recently because Henry and my DH had a cold.. and I have been MELTING at night. I sleep so much better in the cold. I just couldn't put the cool mist humidifier on and keep the temp at 65 though.

Me neither! This is the first time it occurred to me, although it makes sense since LO will not have cuddly warm blankets. We like the house at 58-60 at night, so this will be an adjustment. I am always freezing during the day and crank the heat up in our office, but at night I like it cold. At least we have a fan that we can turn on for the toasty nights ahead.

We keep the thermostat set at 66 all day. However, Adeline (and soon to be Milo's) room gets colder than anywhere else in the house so she sleeps in a onesie, fleece pajamas, and stays covered with a blanket. Since Milo will be in our room for the first few months and realistically probably in our bed he will be in long sleeve pajamas and a fleecy sleep sack. When he is first born we will probably crank the heat up a bit so we can do skin-to-skin comfortably.

I usually keep my thermostat at 67/68 at all times. The babies room is the chilliest in the house but if the door is open, it is ok. I find the comment about heat being linked to SIDS interesting and will have to research that more. I think it makes sense!

If anyone has ceiling fans, they are also recommended to lower the risk of SIDS to keep air circulating, just used on the lowest level.

I have to change mine from 60. I have a fan blowing on me and my window unit set to 60. Dh tries to turn it to 70 but it feels like a sauna to me. When baby gets here I will turn off the fan and leave the window unit on fan instead of cool. Our house is set to 68 but I close the vents in my room.

We keep ours at 64. Ds is fine now with his baby deedee sleep sack, but with the new baby we may bump it up to 66-67. Baby will be in a swaddleme and hat probably.
