Protective dogs

Have anyone else's dogs become super protective since you got pregnant? The cable guy came and this is the first time someone has been here when my husband hasn't been home and they went nuts. I locked them up and they are going super crazy and my little dog tried to bit him before I could get them put away!

  • Our dog has been clingy since I was in about the third month. Lately she's been obnoxiously clingy, she lays on my feet when I eat (not normal for her), she wants to sleep in our bed more than normal and the other night she woke me up 3x in the middle of the night (to remind me to go pee?). I'm sure she will flip when we put up the pack n play in our bedroom this weekend.
  • Nope, my dog only gives a shit about the kids, because they are walking food dispensers.

  • Our dog is not aggressive at all but she is super clingy.

  • My dog is crazy protective at all times. We will be walking in our neighborhood and pass a person and she is fine as long as there is no conversation, as soon as they speak, she will bark at them. It's super annoying.
But she does shadow me around the house much more than normal lately, I hope she chills soon!

  • Yeah it was a huge shock and totally out of character for him. We've had him for a long time and he's around people a lot, including strangers, without any issue. I'm not sure if there was something about this guy they sensed that I didn't or if it's because of the baby and the hubby wasn't there.
  • I love how dogs can tell, even before you show. My friend's dog is usually crazy aggressive to everyone but her (she usually has to put him up when friends come over) but the pup has loved me for months now. Won't even bark, just wants to cuddle with me when I visit. I guess I'm the opposite of intimidating.

My cat has had no reaction whatsoever - but she's not the brightest to begin with :P

  • My dog hasn't shown any change regarding his protectiveness. But then again, he's still a puppy. As for my cats - they definitely know that there will be a change. They are EXTREMELY needy ever since I started showing. I'm pretty sure they'll freak the heck out when we bring home our baby. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a tad bit concerned about how it will all go down.

  • Ever since I became pregnant my Maltese has become extremely protective of me. If my husband lays a hand on me, the dog with attack my husbands hand. I worry that the dog will have a problem with the baby touching me.
  • My dog isn't protective over me at all if DH or anyone else is around. in fact he hangs out with me LESS since the pregnancy and acts very indifferent toward my general existence, however, if I'm home alone and someone unknown comes over (contractor, etc) he will cut a bitch.
It was SO a typical the 1st time it happened I didn't even know what to do, luckily he's a 10 pound pomeranian so I just picked him up and removed him from the immediate area.
Pre-pregnancy if I was home waiting for a service person my dog was extremely friendly to everyone.

  • Yes definitely!
My Doberman is already protective but he's driving me crazy now because he will NOT let me out of his sight when I'm at home. He absolutely must be able to see me at all times.
My Boxer has just gotten super super super clingy, but he's always been a momma's boy. He tries to mimic the Dobie and be protective, but most people really cant take his goofy face with the wagging nub tail very seriously.
    They are both constantly underfoot.

My dog has bit many of our friends in the ass. It happens, he hasn't drawn blood yet.

  • I don't think my dog knows I'm pregnant haha. Although my friend's super sweet dog snapped at a neighbor on a walk, and she went into labor the next day. I can't picture my dog ever doing that (her version of being a guard dog would be licking someone to death) but I couldn't picture my friend's dog like that either, so who knows!

  • Both pregnancies my dogs have become very clingy, I cant even go anywhere in the house with out them following me around. Now with my two year old son, one of our dogs has become VERY protective. When my son was an infant we pulled up to bank with the dogs in the back, the bank teller ran out to give me something in the car and the window was down. She stuck her hand in to touch my son without addressing my dogs in the back first and one of my dogs bit her. I felt horrible and apologized like crazy but the lady said it was her fault for reaching into the car directly for the baby. I'm definitely more cautious now when new people come around and will make them meet the dogs outside first so it wont cause any problems.

  • My dog keeps looking at me like, "you made another one?  why?"

Seriously, she looks so sad.  But she loves playing with our toddler, so I know she'll get over it.

I don't have a dog, but I do have a cat.  I'm fairly certain she knows I am pregnant, or maybe she just thinks I'm fat.  Either way, she won't lie on my belly any more.  I wouldn't go as far as to call her protective, but I have noticed that her body language changes when I go into the nursery, almost as if she is saying, "am i allowed to be in here?"
