The first Thanksgiving with the kids was hard. They were at the peak of their MSPI, before I really knew it was our problem. So much crying and spitting up. I actually began my elimination diet the day after. I managed to get a traditional meal on the table, but it was unceremoniously eaten as quickly as possible while holding babies.

Last year, DH was gone. Another wife invited me to spend the holiday with her family. It was really nice, but not the same. Kids had a meltdown and we left before dessert. I didn't have any leftovers either - aka the best part.

I'm really looking forward to this year. It's just us four since we don't live near any family. We've booked the river side, mountain cabin that we went to over the summer. I have a fabulous meal planned and I'm spatchcocking the turkey. The day after, we're going into Leavenworth. It's a Bavarian town that goes all out for Christmas. There's a big festival and Christmas market that weekend. Kids will get to decorate paper lanterns and then we'll walk with Santa and Mrs. Claus in a little parade of sorts. I'm really excited about it all.
I had to Google spatchcocking, lol. DH does this to chicken, I just never knew the official word. That Christmas market sounds awesome!

Usually small tokens of appreciation - Holiday scratch offs and a treat were my go to. We always did secret santa for a week too.

Random- if your kids would never meet one side of the family, would you fill out that side of the family tree page in the baby book? I'm starting DS's baby book. I'm writing down his paternal grandparents and aunts and cousins names on the family tree page. It feels so weird. But I figured he should have their names at least.
I think the names are important especially if something happened to you or your DH. I filled in DS's book with the names of all immediate relatives and nex to it their DOD. Not the same for you I know but at least he'll have something to go on if need be.

    Yes, I would.

Yes.  My Dad died when I was almost 3 and I didn't grow up with that side of the family.  As a result, I know very little about their family history, other than what my Mom can tell me, or what one of my cousins happens to know.  As I've gotten older, it's interesting to me.  I found out that my great great Grandma on my Dad's side was actually 1/2 Shoshone Indian.  It's pretty cool to explore that geneology as an adult. :-)

  • I ordered a hutch base from Younker Furniture Store on September 27. On the notice it says it was supposed to be in the warehouse November 14. I called last week. Nope. Then I called  Sunday to make sure, nope. They only deliver up here once a month so the delivery date is set for December 19. 3 freaking months after ordering. I'm not good with confrontation but I want to call, complain and hopefully get something for this. Meanwhile 2 holidays will have come and gone before I get my damn hutch! How do I tell them to shit or get off the pot nicely?

Wish I could tell you something helpful. We ordered a new breakfast area table, but decided we'd do the pick up rather than pay $90 bucks for a 10 mile delivery. So 2 weeks later it comes in. DH picks it up puts it together and when he sits down the table top comes to his chest. Um, we ordered dining height not bar height. So they reorder. DH takes the other table back 2 days later when our new table arrives. Um, still bar height (at least he didn't leave with it). They re-order again it will be in the next day at 7:00 pm. We show up Saturday at 7:30, the truck has not arrived. We go back by the store Sunday morning after breakfast. Another bar height table. At this point I am WTF!!! It was supposed to be in last night at 7:00. DH is oot right now. i am so over this whole thing. We were going to order a dining room table and chairs. I am now rethinking that.

I would be slightly crabby about this. We live 2+ hours north of the store and don't have a way of picking it up. They did throw in free delivery but they bulk a ton of things and then delivery them all at once up here. I wasn't expecting 3 months. That's just crazy!

  • Question for those of you that are supervisors, do you get your employees Christmas presents and if so what do you give them?
I have never had a supervisor give me anything other than a card.
Nope.  I've had employees give $5 starfucks gift cards out to everyone.

As a company we try to do something special for our employees.  We usually take everyone out to a nice lunch, then give Christmas bonuses.  I don't think any supers give their emps gifts.

@harti09 this all sounds so amazing I totally want to crash your Thanksgiving!

I have to work Thanksgiving day so my husband is in charge of cooking (which is a very good thing) and he told me last night that he is planning to spatchcock the turkey too! We always shorten words in our house and I could not for the life of me figure out what he was trying to shorten with the word "spatchcock".    (I've since seen a video on it and it sounds divine!)

  • We used to give lotto tickets, which are tons of fun to hand out.  BUT we have a dude with a gambling addiction and it just seems kind of meh now.

    Confession:
Not sure if it was the glucose test crash or the obscene amount of food I ate from Chicfila after that caused me to take an hour nap in the middle of a WFH day.  I thought I was going to die keeping my eyes open.

    Complaint:
MIL took W last night and watched her today.  Tells me today at 3 that she has to drop her off at 345 because she has a meeting.  Why did she even take her?  Hello - we pay a sitter because we both work, she should have gone to the sitter.  My SIL is due any day with her first child and my MIL is frantic.  She's also been texting me in the middle of the night about dumb stuff, I think because she can't sleep.  I'm trying to be nicer about it, but I'm just so annoyed.

  • @MelsaX you've made my year!!!

We are going to Michigan for Thanksgiving. I'm excited and stressed. My cousin had a baby 5 weeks after Briar was born (on my bday!) and I'm really excited to see the new little one and get our kids together (we had the same due date, but she had her daughter 1 month before Jasper was born). They are the only cousins the kids have that are their age, so it's nice when we get them together to play. Since we rarely make it back home, though, we have like 2874 family get togethers to attend while we are there, so it's going to be hectic. To top it off, they're all each about 1.5 hours from one another, sooooo ugh. And they have snow. Tons of snow. BUT we will get to see my great grandma, who I haven't seen since 2009, so I'm super excited to be able to get a 5 generation picture. On H's side, we have a 5 generation picture of all guys, and on my side it will be all girls. Aside from the thousand hours of driving, kids missing naps, and having to sleep on air mattresses for a 4 night span, I can't wait to see everyone!

Apparently I need a few synonyms for 'excited'....

Maybe this will get her off your case for awhile! It could be a good thing.

  • My family makes the best thanksgiving food - fried turkey and dressing with oysters!

A bunch of weird relatives invited themselves last year, and did so again this year :(  We like to eat, watch football and look through ads, and nap.  It totally screws everything up, and my siblings are upset because one family member is a recent recovering alcoholic so they've asked that nobody drink any booze.  Whaaa whaaa.
We used to have Thanksgiving at my aunt's, and my uncle's weird relatives invited themselves.  I actually kind of miss it now.

My first boss out of college got everyone amazing gifts--wine, gift cards to local shops, a dinner out to a really nice place as a whole group, with spouses.

My current boss buys us each a book she thinks we'll like and makes a little gift pack with pencils and cute tissue and stuff.

    In between , zilch.

  • We used to do a dinner outing with our employees and their families, but our top engineer had an affair and now his wife won't come to anything because she's embarrassed.... so he doesn't come.  Sounds stupid just to cancel it all over one employee, but that's why we started doing it as a company lunch.

I hope so!  SIL lives in CO though, so it's possible that it will just make MIL more annoying when she gets back from her week there.  She hasn't really acknowledged my pregnancy (don't get me wrong - this is A-OK with me), but today said she can't believe I'm showing and asked when I will hit second tri.  LOL.
