Deli Meat?!?

I just now read that pregnant women are not supposed to eat deli meat... right after I had turkey for lunch!! And I know it's not the first turkey I've had since getting the +YES.  Has anyone asked their dr. about this?!  I don't go in to see mine until Dec 5th...

Re: Deli Meat?!?

  • As long as you're not buy "questionable" deli meat from a shady backstreet vendor, you're fine.

The concern is that food poisoning/illnesses would have a larger impact on pregnant mamas and babies.

If you are concerned, do a quick nuke in the micro.

  • Don't stress it. If you hear about recalls, check them out though. There was a cheese recall recently in my area for listeria. I love cheese.

  • Just nuke it in the microwave for like 10 seconds.  At places like Subway, I would just always get it toasted.

If you are super concerned about it...Take all your deli meat out of the package and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds and then put it into a new zip lock bag to store in the fridge. That 15 seconds is all that is needed to kill the listeria (bacteria) that could be on your meat.

ETA: Here is some more information on listeria and pregnancy:

  • I just ate an un-microwaved salami and cheese sandwich if that makes you feel any better.

I am not worried about it.

  • Just microwave it for like 15 seconds before you put it on your sandwich. No big deal, I eat turkey sandwiches all the time.

  • If you do some research on why they say to avoid deli meat (listeria ) you will see that most listeria outbreaks are with fresh fruits and vegetables, not meat, but meat keeps getting a bad rap.

Eat the meat. Or leave more for the rest of us

    This.
  • You're fine.

  • Seriously. I ate everything you're not supposed to in my last pregnancy. I didn't drink, obviously, but sushi, deli meat, soft serve... You name it. Might not be the "right" attitude, but everyone gets way too freaked out over things like this.
