Talk to me about Neti Pots

My nose stuffs up every night and it makes sleeping difficult.  I've seen a few of you mention Neti Pots have helped.  I've always been apprehensive, I think because I didn't really know how they worked and assumed they were gross.  I watched some youtube videos last night though and think I might give it a try.  Is there any reason I shouldn't use one?  It doesn't create long term problems or anything does it?

Re: Talk to me about Neti Pots

  • I haven't used mine while pregnant (I just haven't had issues yet). But I love mine. When my sinuses are just terrible congested it really helps me. I haven't noticed any long term problems and I've used mine randomly for 5 years.

  • I used one years ago when I was having sneezing fits and it was wonderful.  It basically just washed out whatever was causing me to sneeze.  I'm not sure if they are good for stuffy noses but if your stuffy nose is caused by sinus issue it's worth a try.  Just make sure you use distilled water, not tap.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I swore by mine last time I was pregnant. Since there's not a lot we can take, this was a great alternative. Like PPs have said, just keep it clean and use distilled water.
  • I love it and it has been super helpful with my allergies that are kicking my tail right now. You can also boil and cool tap water if you don't have distilled

  • I love mine. Even before I was pregnant I tried not to take much medicine. The neti pot worked well for me and cleared up a lot of allergy and sinus problems. Like others said, don't forget to use distilled water!

  • I love mine, I use it twice a day. Like others said, distilled water and proper cleaning. For the comfort level, I take the chill off the water with putting it in the microwave for 10seconds. Also, make sure when you pour it, that you ear is toward the drain of the sink, your nose and throat are connected, so if your ear is pointed towards the the mirror...guess where that salty water is going to run....down your throat instead of out your other nostril.

Also, I have the same stuffed nosed problem during pregnancy. I asked my ob and she recommended a humidifier in our room at night, and to take Claritin at night vs in the morning.

I can't say it's solved it, but it's made more bearable.

  • They're great! Either buy sterile solution or boil water first! It's an odd feeling at first, but you get the hang of it pretty quick. Lol, also I'm afraid of making a mess so I get in the shower to do it.

  • I love mine. I've been using it for about a year and a half. It's weird the first few times you use it. I'd try to get the hang of it when your nose isn't too stuffed up.
  • Thanks everyone! I took the plunge at lunch time, can't wait to get home and try it.  We drink water from one of those work place type water dispensers because our well water is not great so I'll use that!

@copilot2012 I take Claritin in the AM, I'll switch it up and see if that helps.  I want to try a humidifier too.  We have propane which is so expensive so we supplement with electric heat which I know is not helping the situation, not to mention all the dog hair!

  • I like the nasimed sinus rinse better. I warm distilled water (never use tap water!!) add packet and rinse away. There is more pressure to rinse things out.

I've had sinus surgery multiple times and since starting this daily regimine, the infections are few and far in between.

    Feel better!

  • I had one, and my husband used it way more than me.

Then my son found it in our bathroom drawer evidently, because I found it on his fake kitchen burner the other day lol.
  • Get a nice little porcelain one that looks like a pot and not a squeeze bottle. You can also buy a little jar of the salt with a scooper which will last a lot longer than those little packets.

I've been using mine for years and have found it especially helpful now that I wake up congested every morning. With the netti I'm able to skip any Claritin which is the main reason I started using it in the first place.

It can be awkward at first but you'll be an old pro on no time!
