I guess this isn't really a WWYD, more of trying to gauge to see if this is a common occurrence. So today, I got home and got the mail. One of our highest credit bills, which we rarely use (it was for a large home repair) had some curious charges on it. Two different charges from okcupid.com totaling about 75. The charges were credited back a few days later. I asked my husband about it and he burst out laughing. He admitted it looked horrible, but he had nothing to do with those charges. He called the company on speaker in front of me. The man verified the charges came under a category of dating and escort services. WTF?! The company cancelled the card and filed it under fraud, but I still don't know what to think. I trust my husband, but that seems like such a random thing to happen. Maybe it's more common than I think...
So I have been in contact with someone from customer service for OKcupid. They verified that it indeed was a scammer and that person has been blacklisted from their site. I am so happy. I am going to give DH a big ole smooch when I get home. Thank you for all your advice and good thoughts!
Re: * UPDATED*WWYD?
Have you noticed suspicious charges on other cards or for places other than dating sites?
If you really trust him - sign up for credit monitoring ASAP and keep an eye on all of your accounts.
My mom sadly has been having some identify theft issues and all her charges have been from cell phone companies, gas, store purchases.
A charge to a dating website would definitely be something to question further.
But... have you thought anymore about selling the house and looking for an apartment for two?
I think him bursting out in laughter over it is especially suspect.
