Reaction to Pineapple?

So, I freakin' love pineapple but the last few times I've had it, I've become very nauseous afterwards. I'm not eating much of it, like maybe half a handful of cut up pieces so it's not that I'm eating a crazy amount of it. Today I had a few pieces with DD and I've been feeling like I'm going to die of nausea for the last couple of hours. I never had this problem before this pregnancy! It's possibly the worst nausea I've ever had and it comes in these intense waves. Anyone else have a reaction to pineapple? Or foods that never gave you a problem before? I'm ready to swear off any and all pineapple for the rest of my life!

  • Raw pineapple makes my mouth blistery and go numb. But I've yet to have that sort of reaction. Some foods make me sick now then before and they also taste different then before.

  • I have a mild reaction to pineapple as it is, mostly a numbness and tingling. I've read it is fairly common. Not sure about the nausea...
  • I've had issues with pineapples and orange juice. I think it's because they are so acidic. But I love them both so much!

  • Pineapple sometimes gives me heartburn but never has made me nauseous.

  • Last time I had pineapple juice I had a crazy reaction to it that I've never had before. My face got really red and hot (it felt like I had a really bad sunburn), then my ears swelled and looked reddish purple and hives on my chest. I have avoided it since. Which is sad because I loved pineapple and it's in SO many other things! :((
  • Could just be the acid. I don't have many aversions this time, but I couldn't stand scallops when I was pregnant last time. 2 years later and I still am just not interested in them, even though I used to love them. Pregnancy is weird.

  • With my first two, it was shrimp. With this one, it's chocolate:( all chocolate tastes like dirt and makes me so sick feeling! Though I eat pineapple almost daily and never really have issues other than tingling from it being so acidic (I also have geographical tongue so it bothers that too.)
  • Oh no @sweaver93, I can't imagine chocolate not tasting good!! I crave chocolate constantly, it's like my sweet tooth is in overdrive all the time.

After about 6 hours the nausea finally died down enough where I could eat dinner and I felt a bit better. It's so strange, I never have had any bad reaction to it before, and I've sat and eaten a crazy amount of pineapple. I guess this LO just wants nothing to do with it!

  • Last pregnancy I ate so much pineapple. I haven't gotten nauseous at all with either pregnancy so I can't relate but that sucks you can't eat pineapple.  This thread is making me want pineapple again.

  • @sweaver93‌ I wish I didn't like chocolate lol. I am addicted to chocolate all the time, but I especially love it during pregnancy. I miss my Halloween candy stash.

  • I know someone who is allergic pineapple, but her reaction is what others have described with tingling lips, swollen tongue, etc and can actually be quite severe. I'm guessing it's just a weird pregnancy symptom for you. Maybe LO will turn out to be sensitive to pineapple.
  • I too love pineapple but the last two times I ate it I had aweful stomach cramps for hours after. Did a little googling to find that pineapple intolerance is something that can randomly happen (not linked to pregnancy) and that you can eat canned pineapple because of the process it goes through. I did have those little cups you can buy, like the applesauce comes in the week prior with no reaction so maybe those are ok too. I'm not sure if the nausea is a sign of intolerance but it's worth looking into if you want to keep eating it. At least you can have it from a can that way.

Ohh very interesting! Perhaps when I forget the pain of last night I'll consider doing a "packaged" version of pineapple....maybe...LOL
