So I just started jumping into CD with my 6.5m DD today. I purchased 6 pocket diapers that came with 2 microfiber inserts each to get started. I figure I could see how I liked pockets and start working on a wash routine, at the very least. Later, I ended up ordering 10 more pockets that come with 10 bamboo charcoal inserts each, but those have a longer shipping time, so they aren't here yet.
DD woke up at 8:30 this am and four hours later she's on her fifth diaper. I put 2 microfiber inserts into each diaper. The first diaper was really soaked, and the next three were pretty wet. She's never complained about a wet disposable, but seemed upset by these diapers. Of course, she seems extra fussy and is probably teething, so maybe it's not just that her diapers were slightly wet.
I know CDs need to be changed more often than sposies, but one per hour seems like a lot for a baby her age (though I'm sure it depends on the baby). I've read that bamboo is more absorbent, so I'm hoping I'll get away with just one insert with those. Do you normally just double stuff pockets for naps or overnight? I am just hoping I can get a good start with the 16 I will have when the other diapers get here, bc DH was already anti-CD, and he's being really critical of how much money I've spent (really not a lot so far). I thought about getting some prefolds and covers to see how that would go, but again, not trying to put much more money into it until I'm sure I can really do this.
Any other tips for a newb? I hope I'm not ruined for CD after 6.5 months of sposies, but I have a lot of really good reasons for wanting to CD, even if it's only part time, so I'm hoping to make it work. Thanks.
Re: Newb questions
Give it a little more time. If she's a heavy wetter, you may need to double up. A lot of people ditch the MF inserts and stuff with flats or flour sack towels (FST). You can get FSTs at Wal-Mart, 5 for $5.
Also, if you're really wanting to do cloth, I say dive in for prefolds and covers. They work really well, especially for heavy wetters, and are cheap.
Switching from disposables to cloth is a little bit of an adjustment... with disposables you don't notice the moisture as much as you do with cloth because, as PPs have stated, it doesn't stay in liquid form.
Good questions. Stick with it, you'll love it.
