Reading/Singing to your baby?

hello lovely ladies,
I was wondering if any of you read/sing to your little ones inside,
I am about 17 weeks and i haven't done much research or have alot of knowledge about if this truly benefits them or "helps them learn" in the future. Do any of you know if it makes a difference? xoxo

Re: Reading/Singing to your baby?

  • It makes no difference the intelligence level.
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't know if it affects intelligence level or not but I read to my DD every night starting at about 16ish weeks and she is a book freak! I just liked the thought of her hearing my voice clearly on a daily basis. She is now 20 months and we read at least 8 books a day. I know reading to them after they are born really does help them learn in Los of different ways but reading to them in the womb can help you feel a connection. It did for me anyway.

The only thing I have ever read about singing to your baby in utero said that if you sing the same song repeatedly they may recognize it after they are born.
I've never read anything about it effecting intellegence.

I've heard this too and was wondering if it was true.

  • I don't buy into the intelligence factor, but I have been playing (mostly classical) music for baby through my bellybuds. I feel him moving around when I play music, which is just cool and fun.

  • I have been singing the same song to baby at night since 16 weeks, in the hopes that she'll recognize it when she's born.

This is off topic, but @jk3610, everytime I see your Nov. siggy challenge pic, I throw up in my mouth a little. Well played.

@jk3610‌, great podcast on NPR: Ted Radio Hour called Unstoppable Learning (aired August 28). One researcher talks specifically about in utero learning. It is fascinating.
  • I don't know about doing it for intellectual reasons, but I sing to my baby... Mainly because our family sings all the time! We make up silly little songs and with our names all the time and now baby Joslyn gets thrown in the mix too. :-)
  • It's kind of hard to study baby's behavior in the womb so it's hard to say if it really helps intelligence or not, but it doesn't hurt for the baby to hear your voice anyway! When I looked this up I saw that if you play or sing a certain song it may soothe the baby after its born so I've been playing my favorite calm Foo Fighters song for the baby every night. :) And if you read to your baby while it's still in there they just get to hear your voice more and it could make you feel more connected to the baby.
  • We read to the baby and I sing the same song since I've also heard that the baby can recognize the song later. We just read for fun though, not really for any intellectual gains or anything. I think it's a nice way to bond before the baby gets here.

  • DD sings to the baby occasionally. I guess baby will know "Let It Go" when he/she is born. :/ We read a lot to DD so baby should hear plenty of stories.

Love this!  Do you have xm?   Lithium has been foo fighters radio for the last week or so...

Reading to the baby certainly won't hurt a thing, so why not?   :)    I personally listen to my favorite mellow rock songs on my commute to and from work.   I really enjoy it,  regardless of whether or not it is going to make the baby smarter,  I feel like I am bonding with the baby and I am sure that the baby picks up on my happy moods (otherwise sitting in traffic sucks, no?).    I certainly hope he or she can sing better and has better dance moves, but what the hell! :p

  • Love Dave Grohl as well...although I have to admit Eddie Vedder edges him out slightly (only slightly) in my book. I grew up listening to both bands....can't wait to take my kiddo to a PJ or Foo concert down the line!

Love the into the wild soundtrack and ukulele songs in the car.  Plus pretty much anything rock acoustic style.  :)   There have been several Foo Fighters songs on repeat in the car lately... there is just something about them!   And Jack Johnson.  There could never be enough Jack Johnson.

You ladies watching sonic superhighways?  It is on HBO methinks.  Baby brain can't remember for sure though...

I think I would die a little of laughter if my husband admitted to wanting to make out with either of the two, lol.    That's just fine with me though...less competition!

They've been my favorite band since I was 11 so I felt that I needed to introduce the baby to them early! :) And Dave Grohl is the best. Definitely my biggest celebrity crush too. He's just so perfect!

I don't have xm, but I just got the new Foo album so I've been playing that on repeat for the past week haha. The baby started kicking like crazy during I Am a River so I take it that he/she likes it!

Sonic Highways! DH and I have been watching every episode. It's really interesting and I love that every song on the new album was recorded in a different city!

ETA: Also, sorry for posting three times! I should have just tagged everyone in one response. Oops.
  • I listen to npr everyday in the car... Maybe my baby will recognize the voice of Ira Flato better than my own!
