Vitamin D drops

Our pediatrician recommended vitamin D drops as I am EBF. I did use these with DS1 also, but we didn't start them until a bit later and just added to a bottle at Daycare. Anyone already started using these drops? I don't plan to start a bottle with pumped milk for a few more weeks, so I'm just looking for any tips on how to administer the drops and if your LO is taking without too much fuss.

thanks!

Re: Vitamin D drops

  • I am using tri-v-sol (1ml) with Connor. I started when he was 3 days old, per the pediatrician. He LOVES the stuff. He'll try and suck it right out of the dropper. I have to give him a few drops at a time so he doesn't drink to fast and get choked up.

  • I use "Baby DDrops" (you can get them from Amazon). Just put a 1 drop on your nipple or pacifier.

We bought Enfamill di-vi-sol (only one my babies r us carried, and gave him one dose at 6 days old ... It gave him extreme diarrhea, (might as well have been yellow water), gassiness as well as made him super fussy and the advice nurse/pedi told us to stop giving it to him. Upon googling (mom fail in researching it AFTER giving it to my kid) the stuff has AWFUL consumer reviews everywhere I looked(amazon, Walmart, target, & even on the Enfamill site itself etc) and the complaints about it all echo exactly what we experienced. Within 24 hours luckily the stuff worked it's way out of his system and we had our normal pooping happy baby back.

We have since switched to Carlson VitD Drops(see below). It's a one drop dose and we/baby have had no issues with it. One drop on the nipple is the way we've found easiest to administer it. We got ours at whole foods for 12.99 and the bottle contains 365 drops so it's all you'll ever need for their first year!

  • No Vit D drops. I supplement with 8000 ius, so she'll get enough through breast milk. I did the same with my others.

  • So glad someone brought this up. I need to ask the pediatrician about it. I have been put on prescription vit d since my daughter was born so I'm not sure I'll need to give this LO vit D or not.

  • I was using Enfamil drops and it didn't agree with my baby. She's pretty gassy which we're used to, but it made her gassiness worse to the point where she would cry because she was unable to pass the gas and she wouldn't sleep. We stopped using it a couple of days ago and she's much better. We're going to try a different brand next week because we'd really like her to get her drops.
  • We are using the baby d drops. We tried the enfamil ones with dd and she hated it.

  • DH brought home the enfamil brand which no one seems to like. DS took them well with just the dropper before a feed, but I guess we'll see if it makes him gassy

  • I'm an idiot, y'all!! I just bought them today at the recommendation of my pedi. I bought the Carlson brand from Garner's and the lowest dosage they had was 1000 IU. The man said that they didn't make a lower dose. What the hell...they have it for babies. I'm going to Whole Foods tonight to get the right ones. I put a tiny drop in her bottle earlier. Do you think it will hurt her?

Probably won't hurt but I personaly would skip the drops the next 2 days since she's gotten a bit of a higher dose.
