Do you always have your child(ren) wear rash guards when spending an extended period of time at the pool or beach? Does your answer change for boys vs girls?

Re: Rash Guards

  • I am amazed at the families of kids (under 7-8) that don't have rash guards on and are "pink" from the sun. It's also been interesting to see in the same family, boys have rash guards on with shorts and the little girls have cute bathing suits but no rash guards. Gotta love vacation people watching!!

  • Caribbean = always a rash guard or sun suit (the full body) unless it's after 5pm

  • I've never heard the term. What's a rash guard?
  • A rash guard is a swim shirt. I don't know another way to describe it. It's made of bathing suit material but is a shirt.

  • Last summer when everyone was talking about them (on tb) I googled it because I had no idea what they were. I still ended up buying a bathing suit that did not have the rash guard. I am very diligent about sunblock on dd and I try to limit her time in the sun. thankfully she did not get burnt.

  • I live in a very high UV area, so rash guards are important to me - kids and adults, especially if we are at the beach. If we are going for a quick late afternoon or evening swim, we'll skip the rash guards and do the sunblock.

Also @acethebase, typically good rash guards have UV protection, usually at least 50+.

My nephew has a rash guard. My 3 year old niece has a lovely collection of tiny two piece swimsuits.

We don't spend much time in the sun so we haven't bought one for LO yet.
  • Oh the swim shirts, yes DS wears it. I wouldn't let him swim without it at least at this age. I would probably do it for a girl too depends on the swim suit she wears and where you are going. Baby pool in the backyard can probably be kept out of the sun more but beach or public pool always.
  • No rash guards here. Never had an issue with them having one so.... When we go to the beach, I always have a little one. So I already have a set up under mutiple beach umbrellas. lol

  • I had never heard of rash guards before. Forgive me, but I thought you were talking about diaper rash cream. :-/

  • I didn't have one this past summer but we kept her under the umbrella when we went to the beach and always put lotion on her. I will probably get one for next summer because she will def be playing more on the sand and will want to get out from under the umbrella.

  • I've also discovered rash guards are great for baby wearing. LO doesn't get as hot in them since they are breathable, and they are quick dry, so there's less sweating involved in baby wearing. In a hot climate, there's something to be said for that!
