Cloth Diapering

Christmas Decorations (Do not open if you're not ready to talk about Christmas)

Okay guys.  I can see snow falling outside my window.  We have a new house that I'm excited about decorating.  Who has some awesome ideas?  I have a railing and staircase to decorate this year and also a mantle.  Does anyone do those oranges with the cloves?  I think they're so pretty, but I wonder if the oranges go bad quickly.  Any fun things to do with a toddler?  Any ways to decorate windows other than spray snow and clings?  And.....GO!

  • I should probably do a little something outside, too.  I hate stringing lights on trees, though.  So maybe a doorway thing?  What do you guys do outside?

  • I'm pretty sure we're only putting up a tree this year, but my favorite decorating is making a snowstorm. I have tons of large and small glittery snowflakes in both silver and white. You can buy them at party supply stores or Target, they sell them as gift tags. I hang them using fishing wire or stretchy jewelry string from the ceiling at various heights.

I used to do this with paper snowflakes in our first apartment.  I made them with vellum paper and put ribbons and beads on them.  Ah, memories.

We have cheesy blow ups in our yard. I love them. We also line the walkway with plastic candy canes. It's perfect.

I have a wide mantle. So I put my Dept. 56 stuff up there and then spread cut up white sparkly garland around to look like snow.

Also I'm having trouble with spelling and grammar today. Don't mind me.

  • Judge away. My kids love it. The neighbors probably hate it. I don't care.

  • Not sure if this is your style, but I hope to do a paper loop chain like this in red and green when my LO is older. https://m.wikihow.com/Make-an-Advent-Paper-Chain
  • We put our (not Christmas) Christmas lights strung along the mantle so they can light up candle holders and that sort of thing.  At my husband's request, this year we have an advent calendar (we don't celebrate Advent either).
I don't want to put up too much decoration because our kid is a force of chaos in the world and will destroy anything we do, and also because we don't actually celebrate Christmas.
  • I am hosting two get-togethers in December, so I am so glad we can start taking decorations. I need help! DH hates putting up lights, so I'm thinking about some LED candles to put in the windows instead or else hang wreaths on the windows.

Stoney, if you gave an Old Time Pottery near you, they have lots of Christmas decor for cheaper than a lot of other places. I found a swag that looks like ice crystals on bare branches to drape across the mantle. This year I'll hopefully also finally hang stockings up there, too. I probably won't do the railings since it already takes 7 forevers to get N to go down the stairs.

  • Ohhhhh yeah, I'll (hopefully) still put up my advent calendar too. I used this tutorial last year and it came out so cute: https://www.themotherhuddle.com/tutorial-miniature-santa-sack-advent-calendar/

  • And I'll probably wrap the bannister outside by the door with my silver leaves garland and some lights, because that wouldn't be too much of a pain to put up or take down. And maybe pop a candle in the kitchen window, if it would fit.

  • Does anyone buy garland wholesale?  There are actually a lot of places I could use it this year because we have a lot of railings.  I used to get it at Walmart, but the quality of it goes down every single year, it seems.  Now it's sad little Charlie Brown garland.

This is adorable! If anyone is willing to make and sell me one, PM me :) I don't own a sewing machine and don't have room for one now!

Look on etsy.  They have all kinds of stuff like this.
  • We are pretty simple on decorations at our house. Other than the tree we have stockings, a nativity on the mantal and a jingle bell wreath on the door. Only change this year will be that DD will get a nativity on her dresser, but only because I got a really nice one last year and refuse to not use the old one. Nativity scenes are my favorite decorations, by far.

  • We spent an absurd amount on cheap tacky decorations at Christmas tree shops Stoney. Snowmen and santas to put in random places that my guess is M will pick up and carry around. Among other things. I love candles in windows but our place doesn't quite work for that.
Me too.  And our place doesn't work for it, either.  I suppose I could put one lone candle in the bathroom window?  LOL.

Duh, thanks. I must not be as much out of the newborn fog as I thought.
  • You should put a lit tree on your front porch and/or a spotlight on it.
Yeah.  I was thinking about that.  Or maybe setting up a bench with an old sled and pots of evergreens, etc.  It needs something, right?

We always got ours super cheap from tree farms.
  • Me too, ITK!  DS is finally out of the pure destruction phase so I feel like I can decorate more normally, haha.  Plus this house has some great features for Christmas deco.  Some houses are just easier to decorate than others.  Our first apartment was awesome and this is the first place we've lived since where it's gonna be awesome again.
  • ITK, you're brilliant! Your advent calendar reminded me of the one we had growing up. If I can get time this weekend, I'm going to make one for my brother's family for Christmas. They're SO hard to buy for, and that is a great Christmas memory for both of us. I think mine is going to be something more like this but with fun colors. It's more like what we had growing up.

Sew this Christmas Tree Advent Calendar - complete with little ornaments to add for each of the days!

One thing I just considered...they have a 1 year old (and an 8 year old). This has very small pieces for the ornaments. Is this a terrible idea after all?? Or will the surely hang it up where the baby won't reach it?

I'm sure it would get hung where the baby can't reach it. I love that one, it's so pretty!

  • If you're worried about it, you could always decorate it differently so nothing can come off.  You could embroider decorations or just use a pretty pattern for the tree.
  • I LOVE THIS THREAD! My windows do that, too, SAK! We're definitely going to have to do the wreath thing now. What do you hang yours with? Command hooks or ribbon shut inside the window?

  • I love this thread, too! Hubs hates hanging Christmas lights but does it for me anyway (I'd do it but he's 6'1" and has a much longer reach than me). I would love to do wreaths on the windows but hubs has some weird aversion to the sound the mane against the glass when it's windy.

We usually wrap the pillars on the front stoop with lights and have an old sled by the door with lights around it. And our mantel has a pre lit garland, stockings, and a few candles. I usually put a big red bow on the mirror, too. Maybe this year I'll wrap the mirror I'm wrapping paper.

We host a wine and cheese party every Xmas eve, so we put little decorations all around the house. Last year, hubs put fake garland between the two sconces above our couch in the basement. An old wooden nutcracker on the entertainment unit, and we put the tree in the basement as well because there's more space down there.

  • Also, I have one wall that's all windows and I want to put wreaths on it like this.

That's what my wreaths look like, but with lights. My house unfortunately does not look anything like that one though. *sigh* @unaveragejane‌ I have command hooks inside above the windows so I just pull the ribbon inside and wrap it around the hooks. Our curtain rods actually cover the hooks so I just leave them up year round. The hooks I mean, not the wreaths. Although last year I did leave the wreaths up a ridiculously long time as well.
I had a neighbor who literally left their Christmas wreath up for years.  I can't even look at wreaths made out of bells any more without getting annoyed.
  • I love all of these ideas. But it's mKing me hate my house

  • But how do you hang stuff from the ceiling? Tape?
I used double sided tape, but it was an old house and I had issues with paint peeling so I hope there's a better solution.
  • Making* not MKing ;)

  • I don't even know why I'm asking. We have vaulted ceilings, and while it would look amazing in the living room, I can't reach.
How high are they?  Do you have a ladder?
