Sleep? What's that?

I need help! Our LO is 5 months old with terrible acid reflux and colic. It's typical for us to go through our pile of 22 burp rags in just two days and atleast 5-6 outfit changes a day. With that being said our pediatrician and her GI specialist wanted her sleeping in RnP. At 2month she was sleeping through the night! Since 4months she has outgrown the RnP and now she won't sleep in crib or PnP. On average she wakes up 10-13 times a night. I have tried everything: inclined crib, section crib in half so she can't move as much, stomach/back/side, and yes we have tried letting her cry it out to learn to self soothe but the three nights we tried she cried for 6-7hrs (broken up as I eventually give in and soothe)

What else can I do? I need sleep! Our LO needs sleep! Help!!!

Re: Sleep? What's that?

  • Also she refuses a MOTN feeding!

  • We had a similar problem and ended up taking DD to see a chiropractor (one that only uses the activator, no bone cracking). Three visits with him and her reflux and colic were all but gone. She's still a gassy baby and has her bad nights (esp now with teething in the mix) but overall we now sleep a good 8+ hours at night.
  • I have no experience but I just want to say sorry. That sounds really miserable for all of you :(

  • Thank you for responding ladies! I'm out of options so I'm going to check into a chiropractor! Anything is worth a try! Don't know how muh longer I can function with an average of 3-4hrs of sleep a day:/ ugh
  • No experience but good luck FX the chiropractor works.
  • Goodness, I'm sorry! I hope you get something figured out. If not maybe see about having someone else (family or friends) watch baby for just one night so you can go get some legit sleep. Maybe if you aren't exhausted you'll be able to see more clearly and figure something out? Good luck!
  • I seem to have formed a routine:/ he goes in her crib around 10 and falls asleep. Does good till 1ish then she's up every 15mins crying. I end up going in there giving paci and she falls asleep for about 15minutea and up crying again. The cycle repeats. By 4-5am I'm frustrated and exhausted and usual end up bringing her I. Bed with me. She doesn't sleep sound but goes about 45mins without waking up. I'm just physically exhausted. My mom tries and helps when she can but she lives an hour and a half away. I just don't get it. During the night she spits up and makes these terrible faces and tries to swallow. I think the paci helps sooth the pain and discomfort and it falls out when she falls asleep and so this causes a cycle of crying:/ that's all I can figure out
  • Thank you ladies! We are gonna continue trying any options we have! As I am exhausted today, it's nice to read all the encouragement and positive thoughts you ladies are sending our way!
  • What reflux medicine is she on? I'm sure you have tried several. Do the doctors have any suggestions? I'm so sorry. That sounds really difficult.

  • Things aren't getting any better. Last night: slept on couch 8-9:30, awake for 11:00 bottle and asleep by 11:30. Put in crib at 12. Awake screaming 12:45-1:20 (calmed with paci and patting on back) slep till 1:44 awakened screaming at top of lungs till 2:30, back asleep in crib till 3 awake at 3:15, 3:26, 3:51 , 4:22, 5:00, soothed with paci each time, awake at 5:30 screaming refusing MOTN feeding cried to sleep at 6:34 awake for the day at 7:10

    * I'm not the crazy mom that has to detail everything but pediatrician recommended writing everything down for specialist to see.
*durinf those crying spells, she was spitting up, full of gas, arching her back and throwing her self all over the place making it hard to sooth her.
UGH! I hate seeing her in so much discomfort!

On that note, I'll be saying a few extra prayers tonight.
  • Ugh that's awful, I feel so bad for your LO. I'm hoping you can get some help from the specialist and she feels better soon.

  • That sounds so awful. I hope she (and you) get some relief soon!

  • Have you considered trying one of those hanging baby hammocks? When I was a nanny, a family I worked for used one for their baby who had horrible reflux. It was the only way he could sleep.

    Good Luck!

  • Sorry for the delay ladies, we have had a horrible past couple weeks with family members passing as well. Thank you ladies for all the advice! We are being seen at U of M on December 9th and I'm so excited to hopefully get some relief.
  • Keeping you and LO in my thoughts and prayers.  Praying for positive outcome at your MD visit.

  • Went to the chiropractor today for an assessment and they were really no help. Said they could do an adjustment but nothing seems to far outta wack. Ugh.

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers, as each week passes I become more and more exhausted:/ I truly don't know how I'm even functioning.
  • You poor thing. Hang in there. This too shall pass!
  • When my boo was super colicky for her first two months. I used a colic gel drop called Dentinox. Uk brand. Whenever she would get really colicky id but a dap on her soother an in it would go and I did not use it sparingly. I also used bio Gaia in her bottles and lactose free milk.

At 4.5 months I started giving her a table spoon of rice cereal right before bed. I also really made her daily routine tight.

    7 am rise
    Feed play
    9:30-11 am nap
    Feed play
    1-3 nap
    Feed play
    5:15-6 pm
Rise, play, bath, feed, bottle, bed by 7:15pm
    10pm dreamfeed
    1am feed
    3-5am another feed

Granted not everyday followed the schedule exactly, but it

We are now weaning her from night feeds. I truly wish you all the best and I hope she grows through this quickly! Sending hugs and coffee!
  • Also feeling frustrated as LO is one almost 6months old and now weighs less than she did at 4months. She was just a lil peanut when she was born (4lb8oz) and obviously has almost tripled her weight at 12lb 6oz but at one point she was in the 10th percentile and now we are back to the 4th percentile. Ugh!

Starting to get a routine down at night but she continues to consistantl wake up. Last night she screamed for 4hrs :/
