I think the sad fact is that people smoke even though they have cancer.  :(  I hope your follow-up goes well!

I'd say most of America is doing something to kill themselves slowly--smoking, drinking too much, not exercising, eating crap, living high-stress lives.  Why do we only judge smoking with this kind of harshness?  My UO: We demonize smoking to an unwarranted degree while letting other unhealthy habits skate.  It's like we let ourselves feel ok about all the unhealthy shit we do (societally) because "at least I don't smoke."
I agree that everyone has bad habits. I judge all of it, but seriously, if I had come in here and said they were also all obese, I would be poorly judged for it.

Also, 1 cheeseburger does a lot less harm than 1 cigarette. That is why it is demonized more.

Exactly.  As a society, we're judging the smokers, but not the overweight.  Fat-shaming--bad.  Smoke-shaming--practically encouraged.  I'm not suggesting expanding shaming at all!

As for the second....maybe, but it's a habitual use of either that sets up most health issues.

My grandpa knew he'd already done enough damage to his body by smoking that quitting wouldn't 'fix' him. And you can do serious damage by withdrawal, so I kind of get that too. But if I was a smoker, got lung cancer and I knew I was dying, I don't know that quitting smoking would make me feel any better.
You're all right; it likely wouldn't make you feel better to quit. It just caught me off guard in an oncology office.

I agree that it's pretty acceptable to smoke shame people, and there's more going on there than just a decision to pick up a smoke or not (environment, addition, etc.)....

BUT........ I don't think it can really be compared equally to obesity / poor eating habits and exercise.  I think obesity/eating habits are much more multifactorial.

I think smoking could be compared pretty closely to alcohol though, and it's odd that it's completely socially acceptable to drink until you reach that limit of alcoholism (eta or health/social problems due to drinking).  Still, people don't shame for alcohol addiction like they do for a smoking addiction.  Perhaps because alcohol in moderation doesn't do permanent detrimental damage to your body, but smoking in moderation does?

    This is an interesting discussion.

Smokers have more of an odor than obese people and alcoholics, so maybe people feel it affects them more, or it's not as easy for someone to conceal?  I would hope someone who is dying of heart disease is eating a healthier diet.... though you are far more likely to change the outcome of a disease caused by overeating than you could with a cancer diagnosis.

@melody921 definitely doable! Post after pictures. :) there's a mom in our local group that does that too. I'm in it for playdates, not to fuel your business. She set up a pedicure/manicure playdate. Seriously? Cj won't let me do my nails at home, let alone someone's house! Fine print? It's a jamberry party. Not cool.

That's crazy. How the hell would you expect people to relax and do nails when there are a million kids running around? I did a Jamberry party last week at my mom's and everyone brought their kids; it was so difficult to teach people and do their orders but I made the best of it because it was their choice. I can't imagine inviting the kids on purpose. What a nightmare! Plus, sneaking it in on people is just going to piss them off.
That's why, my friend, my jamberry orders will go to you. ;)

    >:D<
  • I think part of why smoking is shamed more, is because it affects the health of other people as well as the person with the addiction.  I can watch an obese person eat a cheeseburger all day without becoming fatter, or an alcoholic drink in front of me without feeling tipsy, but if I'm smelling your smoke in an oncologist's office, then my health is worse for it.  If I had cancer and wasn't a smoker, that would probably piss me off, seeing as it's not permitted to smoke there, and I'm there to get healthier.

I wish more people would smoke e-cigarettes.

Good to know! I've ordered office stuff through them before but never cards.

  • As a former smoker and someone who lost her grandmother to COPD, emphysema and lung cancer, I have no problem thinking that someone should stop smoking. Whether you've reached the point of health issues or not. Yes, quitting is hard and if you've gotten a terminal diagnosis it can be all you think you have left, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

To a certain degree, everyone's health is in their own hands and people have the ability to improve their health by ridding themselves of bad habits such as smoking, excessive drinking, poor eating and lack of exercise. A strong support system is also crucial in improving these areas, but above all a person needs to want it, and that's the first step.

I realize this post is all over the place. I kind of word vomited it out.

On the note of fat shaming, I think the attention should be turned to the food industry and we should be "food industry shaming" (for lack of better words). It's just ridiculous what is put into our food and the marketing that goes into junk and fast food.

Not that people are mindless and just eat what they're told, but the way the food industry works isn't helping the rapidly growing obesity rate.

    Bravo.

My kids won't get an ear infection because you want to get your drank on. I won't feel obligated to throw my whole family in the shower after getting home from an unhealthy person's house... unless you're unhealthy from frying everything, in which case I will, but I will secretly sympathize with you because let's face it, everything tastes better fried.

Smoking is a sore subject for me, though. My mom has smoked for as long as I can remember, and I cannot stand it. We have had many heated battles over it, for many many years. It has caused many health problems, both to her as well as her children.

I agree to an extent, but I'm really big on personal responsibility. So just bc fast food joints and HFCS are everywhere doesn't mean I have to eat like that. If I eat junk, I fully accept the fact that it's bc that's what I felt like having in that moment. I don't blame the industry. And that's even more true for kids, who only eat what adults provide. They can want the junk food advertised with a cute cartoon all the want, but if the parents/grandparents/daycares don't buy it, guess they're stuck with an apple.

Personal responsibility is huge, too. Yes. I agree. And I could go on and on about that part of it (but I won't right now ;) ). I just never realized how not healthy a lot of the food is that is supposed to be "healthier". I've had a rude awakening since we've had to start reading every label for DH.

TX has plenty of scary ass tornadoes and very few basements. And it is over 100 degrees for like 60 days straight in the summer, with no ocean to make the hot worth while. This is from someone that likes TX, but it is not for everyone.

This. I wouldn't sell used Hunter boots for that low, unless they were beat to hell. New in box? No way. $15 is still a good deal for adult boots I think, so it's a good find!

  • To be clear, I'm not trying to compare the actions themselves--just the reactions.  People who would never dream of shaming a fat person they KNOW is actively making poor lifestyle choices will shame a smoker.  Not saying smokers shouldn't, objectively speaking, make a lifestyle change--but really, it's not my business and not my choice.  What happened to "my body, my choice?"

I'm also not speaking to secondhand smoke--smoke in your own space on your own time, not around other people who don't want to be exposed.

But as for smokers simply being health risks by being around, not smoking, yeaaaaah, no.  Please point me to a study that says if you have smelled the scent, your health is the worse for it.  There is no evidence to prove this unless something truly groundbreaking has come out while I've been buried in work.

I looked at getting DH that for his birthday last year. I saw the prices and almost fell over. Beer was cheaper so that's what I went with. That's some expensive pig!
