My UO is that I don't think noise-making jewelry items (bangle bracelets that clank together, jingle bell earrings) are appropriate for work. I was easily irritated by noise before I was pregnant, but it's worse now.
I don't think that will be and OU, that annoys the crap out of me!

  • I can't stop looking at my registries... What's worse is that Amazon tells me who bought what... that will be great for later on maybe but for now I'm finding a hard time peeking.
Wait, what?? I've gotten no emails from amazon and I've been stalking my registry and seeing things purchased. Now I feel like they are leaving out information that I really don't need but feel like I'm being cheated out of. How do I get this magical power

I think people that smoke should be required to changed clothes before coming back into a patient care environment, or not be allowed to smoke.  I have one coworker that wears her hospital issued scrubs out to the smoke shack and then bathes in cheap perfume when she comes in.  It makes me want to puke, even when I wasn't pregnant it bothered me.

You guys are allowed to do that? My hospital system tests for nicotine and won't hire anyone that tests positive. For those employees that already worked there before this was implemented, there's no smoking on hospital grounds or within 150 feet of the grounds. I enjoy it because I HATE the smell of smoke, pregnant or not. And I find it very hypocritical and dumb to stand there and tell patients the reasons they shouldn't smoke while you smell like you just rolled in an ash tray for an hour.
    ------------------------------------------------

Our hospital allows employees to smoke off of hospital grounds. I think it may deter some from taking a smoke break, but the majority of people schlep across the street in their hospital issued "uniforms" and smoke on the corner. Great image for the hospital!

The OR staff is supposed to change out of their scrubs to leave the building and put on a new set when coming back. Very few people actually do this.

I'm not sure what the policy is on the postpartum care unit. I would be shocked if they are allowed to wear their scrubs to smoke as they handle babies and smoke, even on clothes, increases risk of SIDS.

On the smoking topic, if you work in a spa or hair salon you shouldn't be allowed to smoke. There was this one great masseuse but she always wreaked of smoke. I had to specifically request she not do my massages because I would get so sick from the smell lingering on her hands etc while she was massaging me. I would feel the same way getting a hair cut. Yuck!

I guess they tried to go to a smoke-free campus and the union workers had a fit.

We would make great room mates ;) Our bed gets made everyday as soon as we get up, except Sundays (that's laundry day), but we make it as soon as the sheets come out of the dryer.

oh, that would completely ruin the whole massage for me.
  • On the smoking topic:
I'm an ex-smoker, quit 8 years ago. The smell bothers me tremendously. Not because I'm an ex smoker, it bothered me before when I did smoke. I knew I smelled like an ashtray that hasn't been emptied in a year and it grossed me out.
I think it's worse when it comes from a health care professional. Don't tell me how to better care for myself when you are outside at least once an hour destroying yourself. Also, attempting to cover it up with "smell-good-stuff" (perfume/cologne) makes you smell WORSE! It's not covering up the smoky smell, it's adding to it and now you are just confusing/irritating my senses.

  • @emmyg65‌ i agree diet fads are crazy and they definitely make some people a lot of money! However, grains are consumed way too much and the substituting veggies for grain products is a smart alternative! I lost 20 pounds going gluten free (because bread makes me bloated and constipated) so I know how much healthier it is cutting it out, even if I miss it dearly. My UO: The food pyramid is full of crap! Veggies, fruits, and proteins should be on the bottom while 100% whole grains on the top and leave out white sugar and white flour!

My UO: people who are buying into the "Don't shop on Thanksgiving" mumbo jumbo need to STFU. Who do you think you're kidding? Even if NO ONE shopped at Walmart on Thanksgiving, they wouldn't close. Those employees would still have to be there for their shifts.

I won't even mention all the other businesses that are open on Thanksgiving, but, movie theaters, grocery stores, liquor stores, airports, football stadiums, just to name a few. All of those places require employees to be there, too. But no one is saying "Don't go watch a movie! Don't fly on Thanksgiving! Don't go buy your last minute stuffing on Thanksgiving!" Aren't those employees people, too?
I would add that you also never hear "Don't break your arm doing something stupid!!"  There are tons of nurses/doctors/EMTS/paramedics who typically work these holidays, too, and you never hear that anyone losing their mind over them having to work.  I've got 2 cousins who are nurses at smaller county hospitals . . . rarely see them on holidays because they're always working.
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • I think the part that annoys me about stores being open on Thanksgiving is that there are so many people who would rather shop than spend time with their loved ones on a holiday. It annoys me when we sit in traffic for 5 hours to drive down to MD to spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws, and my SIL just wants to go shopping. Like, ok, I see where your priorities are. Thanks...getting a deal is more important to her than spending time with us!

On the flip side, I agree with PP that there are lots of other businesses that stay open on Thanksgiving. I also think that there are lots of people out there who wouldn't mind working on Thanksgiving for the extra money, so I see that side too.
  • Again, on the smoking topic- I work for a world wide healthcare organization and they have implemented a $20 per paycheck policy for all smokers. During open enrollment, smoking employees must check YES and that's how the claim their smoking status. If by chance, it's found that they are lying sometime in the following year by having checked NO, they will be fined. I am uncertain who is monitoring that. My SO works for the same organization as me, he's a smoker and he checked "No"... I wasn't happy about that because if he continues to smoke- he WILL be caught since he has that kind of luck.

I'm almost certain that within the next couple of years, obesity will be added to the fees the organization implements, and as an overweight individual (obese per my BMI), I would be okay with that as it may help lead me to a healthier lifestyle.

I agree with @raveness‌ in that healthcare workers shouldn't smoke... I've always felt that way, but I understand it is an addiction and I am willing to add my unhealthy lifestyle to the equation and say obese people should try harder when working in a healthcare environment. I'm probably not going to listen to an obese dietician or nutritionist.

I can understand them, to a degree. I know a girl who has a grain and bean intolerance, so Paleo works out to be fairly good for her, as a lifestyle choice. Then again, she's been on Paleo eating for the past ten years or so.
I will agree, it's not for everyone. I think it'd be good to pick a 'diet' or an eating habit, and modify it to suit your tastes. Paleo-friendly noodles made of veggies? Go ahead and use regular pasta/noodles. Paleo-friendly bread made with coconut flour instead of normal flour? Use regular bread, but be conservative with it.

Actual food dieting/restriction is good if done right. Nine times out of ten people blow it out of the water and ruin what could be good for them, and instead make it toxic to their bodies. All just to "get thin quick". I hate it, man, shit be stupid

  • Once my SIL invited us over for dinner and told DH that we were having "pasta." It turned out to be a Paleo version with spaghetti squash, and it wasn't too bad, but DH was still disappointed because she had called it "pasta." He was like, "This is a vegetable! This is not pasta!" Ha ha, he has the taste buds of a 5 year old sometimes. I agree that the Paleo version of other food rarely tastes as good as the "real" version. I'm sure if I tried it for a while, my tastebuds would adapt, but right now my tastebuds like real carbs and real sugar.
  • I don't know if this is an UO or more of an annoyance, but I think I must have the dumbest FB friends.  Kohl's is giving away a $100 gift card for simply liking and sharing their post, well that doesn't sound like an imposter site at all.  Disneyworld is giving away an all expense paid trip to liking their page ( that was started yesterday ),  Yes I am sure that is the real Disney FB page.  Some random site says that root canals cause cancer.  Oh my goodness, that must be true.

Puke. I don't make the bed and don't change the sheets too often, but cat hair on my pillow is a "no."
  • My UO : I just started watching American Horror Story this season and I'm just not that into it after all the hype. Maybe the other seasons were just better?

I agree! I haven't watched the others and asked my H if this season is any different than the others and he said "not really". I don't get the plot, as there doesn't really seem to be one?
  • I spent the night at my cousin's one time when I was around 5 years old. I woke up with her cat sleeping ON MY FACE. Plus, they let the cat walk all over the countertops, and I found cat hair in my pizza. I think I was traumatized because now I'm just not a big fan of cats or cat hair, and I certainly don't want it near my bed or kitchen.

We were just talking about this today!
Also, employees aren't working 16hr days... I used to work at a movie theater and holidays were always our biggest box office days, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day sometimes rivaled the summer block-buster openers. I once stayed to close New Years Eve because FOUR people showed up for an 11:40 p.m. showing. But I was still able to 'celebrate' prior to my shift with my family, my parents arranged Thanksgiving dinner so my sister and I could be there (she worked the theater, too, for a while), like, working on Thanksgiving isn't the end of the world. Going shopping on Thanksgiving isn't the end of the world. If you want to spend time with your family, that's awesome, too, but businesses are going to be open, and people are going to have to work, and if you want to go shopping, go ahead.

    Unpopular ;)
I'm just gonna mess it up later in the day, no point. I hate making beds. I shut the door when I'm home. The only time I make the bed is when we know we have company on the way.

I knew this one would be unpopular! Here's an early FFFC then... I make my bed every day...even when I'm on vacation.

It's actually a bit different from the other Seasons, in fact. I started on Season 2/Asyum, and that one drew me in after the first few episodes. Freakshow /does/ feel rather slow paced, and disappointing overall, which is a damn shame. I love freakshow-oriented plots, they can be done quite well.. but I don't know what's going on with this season.

AHS has a fine reputation of having a certain "je ne sais quoi" about it, but this is particularly lacking in the latest one. Asylum tried to do too much, the first Season (Murder House, with the red cover) was still finding itself as a show and it pulled this off fairly well. I've yet to watch Coven/Season 3, but from what I heard it toned itself down after Asylum and learned that it was trying to do too much at once, and took the feel of a drama in a horror-setting.

Now freakshow? I have no idea what it's trying to do, but I really hope it picks up, especialy since it's Jessica Lang's last season(the one who plays Elsa/the lady who owns the circus). Which breaks my heart, because she's such a wonderful actress, it'll be a shame to see her go.

The retailers open on Thanksgiving UO... I worked retail for 6 ½ years, the last three as an assistant manager at a major retailer. I ended up getting laid off from down sizing the spring before the company decided to open on Thanksgiving. The 7 previous holidays I did not get to travel to see my family for the holiday because of Black Friday (every employee in the store showed up, you could NOT get the day off, ever) and I had restrictions on how far I could drive to eat with my families on Thanksgiving, since I would need to be at work by 4:30 am, so bed time was at 6 pm (dinner time, right?). The last three years I did not travel at all because I was a manager in a different county from my home town and had to be there even earlier. To have corporations (who make disgustingly large amounts of money off the employees' hard work like myself who earned just a livable wage, my GM just a little more, with full time and part time associates much, much less) ask employees to further write off Thanksgiving and give it to the materialistic capitalistic masses so they can buy more crap for themselves, and maybe others, is despicable. Yes, grocery stores are open for a couple hours... People can get gas (at some stations, not all are open)... And a movie theater with a few employees open here and there, sure. But how many retail workers are there in this country? More than all those people working I can tell you. And please, let's not dumb down the importance of emergency services by saying those people have to work as well as an argument. We are talking about people who save lives in comparison to people who help consumers find the lowest price on a scarf or flash drive? Give me a break, the importance of each shift can not be compared. The more people home with their families the better. Go ahead, argue that the massive sales around Thanksgiving are awesome, but realize that the following holidays are just as bastardized and no longer about their respective true meanings, but instead the shitloads of crap we give each other year after year after year...
    @marvan5 Amen to this.

I'm not sure what truth there is to it, but on facebook it's going around that Simon malls are fining stores $1,100 per hour that they are closed on Thanksgiving Day this year. That not only include the larger retailers who would probably be able to swing such fines, but also small independent shops that just can't afford that type of loss. Absurd.

Yep, I'll be at work almost all day and by the time I get home it's too late to start a big Thanskgiving meal.  Probably 75%+ of my patients that day will be drunk drivers.  Thanksgiving last year was awful, so many drunk drivers out there.
  • I go in at 7pm on thanksgiving, so I can try to squeeze in an early dinner with my family but will have to leave and be gone all night. I also won't wake up till about time to eat as I need my sleep before shift as well. So basically wake, eat, leave. I work Christmas Eve as well, so I won't be able to do all of the night before Christmas things with our DD, put out the presents, spend time with my H or any of that. I'll come home Christmas morning, open presents and sleep the rest of the day. All the while taking care of patients who (most) see the RN on my badge standing for "refreshments and narcotics" instead of "registered nurse" and don't appreciate a thing we do. Frustrating.
  • @AHemm1986‌ I just checked snopes and they didn't say anything about the malls fining stores, yet. Jeeze I hope that's just another false FB rumor...

The rest of your post sucks though.  At least where I work, we either cover Thanksgiving OR Christmas, but not both.
