Electric Skillet/Griddle?

I never saw the point of these, but now that we have three kids and one on the way, am thinking it might be useful. It would be nice to be able to make bigger batches of pancakes, mostly. Maybe grilled cheese. Do you have one and do you like it? What else do you use it for? Thanks.

Re: Electric Skillet/Griddle?

  • Just get the square pan for the stove - if you don't have a specific use for the griddle, just get the right pan for the job.  Otherwise they also sell flat tops you can put over the burners so you can cook two burners worth of pancakes at once.  Just remember to get a decent one, you don't want them to warp...

  • I don't have one because it takes up extra space, but I'm thinking of getting a skillet to make rosettes in because my friend said it was a lot easier than using the stove.
This would be correct - and FAR FAR FAR safer!!!!!

  • I actually HAVE one of those two-burner pans! It's just not working super well for me. It doesn't heat evenly enough.

  • We have an electric one that is used for pancakes and french toast mostly. We got it at our wedding shower. I can't imagine using the stove to make pancakes and french toast.

Do you have any rosette-making tips to share?  I've only done it twice.
I've got more rosette irons than I care to admit (when Sweet Celebrations was going out of business I stocked up..) - Having a deep fryer (mine also doubles as a crock pot - and was super cheap - just bought one for a wedding gift a while back and they were still in the $20 range)...  Having that temperature control for the oil is vital, but also, it's a lot safer than trying to do it on the stove where it can vary so much and if the oil splatters in the wrong place would mean kitchen remodeling.  That's one of those "just make them" and adjust the recipe as you go to find one you consider perfection!
