June 2014 Moms

Born to Run Junebugs **11/10**

This is a weekly thread for runners who were due June 2014, that is posted on Mondays . All who run--or who want to start running--are welcome, regardless of mileage, pace, ability, size, shape, or terrestrial status. We had this thread during pregnancy, now it's time to lose that baby weight.

Happy Monday ladies!

How were your runs and workouts this week?

I was still recovering from a sinus infection from hell, but I got in 2 runs of 35 minutes each and it felt so good.  My body seems like it's super prone to injury right now which is scary since that was never the case.

What are your plans for health/fitness this week?

I've realized that I do MUCH better when I have planned things for the week so here is my plan this week.  I'm back to logging in my food on myfitnesspal as well!  Anyone on there?  Care to be my friend/motivation?

Mon- T25
Tues- Run
Wed- xtrain (swimming)
Thurs- Run
Friday- T25
Sat- Run
Sun- OFF

Hope you ladies have a fabulous week!

I was literally about to start this thread!  Have I mentioned we missed you @kinipela7?

    My runs:
Good, when they happened.  I ran twice- I think 6 miles total?  Its seriously hard to schedule in runs. I also lifted twice, which I really need because wow, crazy soreness both times

    Plans for the week:
No firm day/mileage plans, but I want to get out at least 3 times to run.

    Question:
Does anyone have a nursing sports bra?  I have ginormous boobs, and I typically have to nurse with my sports bra at least once per workout, it sucks.  Suggestions??

ETA: I love Julia's fuzzy head!!
  • Loading the player...
  • Runs/workouts:
Good! Was able to workout 4 times. My goal is 4-5 times/week. I've been alternating insanity with runs and spinning. Running outside tomorrow with a friend which always makes life easier when I have someone to push/motivate me.

    Goals for the week:
Workout 5 times this week which will be my best yet.

As for the sports bra. I am sadly wearing 2 bras currently haha. I need to do some serious shopping so the input here on which is best will be helpful. I haven't had to nurse her during as I always workout right after I have fed her.
  • Thanks for starting this today, @Kinipela7! Ditto @sjdihle - we've missed you!

My runs/workouts were great last week. I feel like I am finally getting into my groove and a routine. I have become a night runner/workout person and while I still wish I could be getting up before work and doing it, LO's sleep schedule just isn't having that right now. So, nighttime it is.

Last week I got 3 runs and 2 weight training workouts in. I also ran my first post-baby half marathon on Saturday!!! It felt sooo good to do that again, and even though it was my slowest 13.1 to date, I am still very happy with how I did. It was my SIL's first half, so my focus was on making sure she finished and had a good race, not on my time. I'll work on pace for the next one. ;)

This week, I'm back on my weight training routine. I am going to be doing more strength training and less running this winter, which will be a change for me. I know physically, weights are gonna get me where I need to be, not running. However, I won't be giving up running entirely (I really love it way too much to do that) but I'll be limiting my races to 10 miles or less... or at least, that's the plan. I am a bit of a distance junkie so we'll see how long I can stick to that.

  • Wow congrats on doing a half already, that's amazing!
  • The moving comfort Juno was covered on a running mommy blog, so I guess I might have to bite the bullet and spend some money!!  I saw a few other kinds but the reviews didn't say much about how they worked as sports bras more that they were good nursing bras to wear around...  Boobs suck.  Thanks for the suggestions!
  • Thanks - missed you all too!!

@sjdihle - I'm doubling up on bras at the moment - it's a huge PIA!  I've heard great things about the Moving Comfort bras though (they are pricey, but worth it I hear)

@charsamm- I miss spin classes!  Such a great workout!  Wish I still belonged to a gym!

@tdmrs - I'm glad the C25k is working out for you!  Keep it up!

@thegizzmo - Running with a friend is always better - enjoy!

@babygabe614 - I hear you on the weights instead of running.  I wish running would get me to where I want to be, but it's true - weights will get ya there!  Awesome job on the half this past weekend!  What types of strength workouts are you doing?

    @TheGizzmo Thanks!

@Kinipela7 - Right now, I'm doing an adapted version of a circuit I got off SkinnyMeg (LINK). Since I am doing it at home, I do slightly different moves, but I use dumbbells for all of them:

    - Squats (60 lbs)
    - Chest Press (40 lbs)
    - Bent over row (30lb each arm)
    - Overhead press (30lb)
    - Stiff legged deadlift (60lbs)
    - Bicep curl (20lb each arm) - I usually do extra reps of this one and alternate isolating different areas
    - Calf raises (60lbs)
    - Tricep extension (30lbs)
    - Reverse flys (20lbs each arm)
    - Closed legged squat (60 lbs)

And then I just follow her regimen and make sure I do the workout at least 3x/week.

    1st week - 8 reps of each exercise / 4 rounds
    2nd week - 9 reps / 4 rounds
    3rd week - 10 reps/ 4 rounds
    4th week - 11 reps/ 4 rounds
    5th week - 12 reps/4 rounds

  • @babygabe14 - that is amazing, congrats on the half! I was signed up for Boston last year but ended up not being able to run it because I was so far along and running became painful, so my original goal was to be able to run another marathon by this April. I don't even see that being possible now so I am amazed that you were already able to run a half - that is so awesome!!

  • How were your runs and workouts this week?
I got one in finally!! Now that DH is at a new job, he's home Tues and Wed so I can stay at work late and work out here. So I got in 2 miles on the treadmill, I'll take whatever I can get! I even dropped 2 lbs! So just think if I could work out 2x a week! My mom, DS, and I went to 2 craft shows on Saturday too and walked around for about 3 hours so that was some good exercise:)

What are your plans for health/fitness this week?
Trying to eat healthy at this point. Leaving Thursday to go to Houston with DS to visit my sister so my week is all messed up. Planning to bring a work out outfit though and go for a run while I'm there. This polar blast or whatever coming down this week might mess me up though.

I joined the weight loss challenge Nutmegs8 started which starts on Sunday, so I'm really looking forward to that. I am pretty competitive so I think the challenge will really help motivate me more. I'm not big on Thanksgiving food either, so I'm not worried about that interrupting me.

  • @frenchchocolate611 Boston?! You must be one fast mama!!! Will you need to re-qualify now that so much time has passed, or can you still use your BQ time for the 2016 race (if you chose to do it)? I don't think I would ever get close to a BQ (my marathon time is 4:41:20-something) so I'm gonna live vicariously through you. :)

@nicolewhelan Thanks for the reminder about the diet bet! I need to look into that and see if I'm willing to commit. ;)

  • @babygabe614 - haha I am not quite fast enough to BQ yet either (although I am getting close!). In 2013 I ran for Team Hole in the Wall which is an amazing summer camp for children with disabilities/illnesses/etc - my husband is a former camper (he has hemophilia) so I was given a charity spot and had to raise money. I was at 25.8 miles when the bombs went off in 2013 so I was given a "4th wave" spot in the 2014 race for those who had been unable to finish in 2013 due to the bombings. Unfortunately, the BAA would not let me defer my spot until 2015 for any reason, so for now I am back to trying to get a BQ! I am hoping within the next couple of years I will be able to qualify on my own.

  • Wow that is an amazing story @frenchchocolate611!

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @frenchchocolate611 That is crazy!  My husband's Assistant Principal was across the road about to finish when the bomb went off.  He's in several of the panoramic photos.

I'm just impressed people actually can run marathons. No matter how "slow".
  • omg @sjdihle so were my DH and mom (not running - they were watching in the stands - i was still down the street)! MY DH was actually on a 20/20 special about how people taking pictures at events like this can help the police. He was taking photos of the finishers because I was about to finish and got pictures of the bombs going off. He is a paramedic and ran down to help some of the injured people. My mom later found a bomb fragment in her purse and the FBI came to her house that night to interview her and take the piece of the bomb. It was seriously crazy.

  • @frenchchocolate611 Ho-Lee-Cow!!!!! That is insane!!!
  • @tdmrs - you can do it! :) The hardest part for me was the time committment - something I am clearly struggling with post-baby! But the feeling at the end is absolutely amazing and is definitely addictive!

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @tdmrs I agree with @frenchchocolate611 - the time commitment really was the "hard" part for me. I absolutely loved training, though. But I also have a great group of ladies I run with who kept me company on those 3- and 4-plus-hour runs. It is a feeling like no other when you finally finish the 26.2, though. Totally worth all of the "hard" parts leading up to it!
