Vent...Kind of dumb

So this girl (an ex of one of dh's friends) I'm friends with on Facebook announced she was being induced today. One poster asked why and she said it was elective which made me cringe especially because she is 38 weeks today.
Well baby was born this evening and is now in the NICU for respiratory reasons and jaundice.
I know it's none of my business but if there is no medical reason to induce why can't people just let their babies cook?! Vent over.

  • Doctors aren't allowed to induce before the due date unless there is a medical reason. I wonder if she didn't want to say the reason...
  • There could have been a number of reasons that they decided to induce but I'm all for letting babies cook till they're ready. I've told my story before but I was induced at 38 weeks due to my blood pressure being off the charts. I'm kinda glad I did (despite a flippin' 30 hour labor) because he was almost 9 pounds. If I have gone 40 weeks I would have easily ended up with a 10lb baby. I was super close to a c-section with Kieran's birth.

Obviously this was not the case with the girl you mentioned but perhaps she just didn't share the whole story on facebook?

  • I had DS at 41w6d so I know ALL about being done and over it. My best friend's sister induced 1 day before her actual due date because she was done. I secretly judged her even though she went the full term. I never understood even though she was FULL term why she couldn't just wait until baby tried to come naturally?

  • I can understand a membrane sweep. I had mine done that early because my doctor was trying to encourage a successful VBAC. But an induction? My BFFs cousin had a baby and she wanted him out so bad. She was trying to do everything she could to encourage labour at 36 weeks and he stayed put until 40w2d. Turns out he was very small, very thin and very shaky. I mean, both my kids came a bit early, but I was happy to let them bake bake bake!

  • Both my babies were overdue and I never get too antsy until I hit my due date, then I start to get uncomfortable, but I have been blessed with tiny babies even if they are late. My SIL decided she was done at 36 weeks
So she had weekly membrane sweeps done from that point until 38 weeks when her water broke, probably from the sweeping, but she didn't go into labor. They induced and the whole thing irked me for some reason. But I don't know this girls story - the "I am done" ones are my pet peeves though.

  • I never understood this either. I'm in the camp if let them bake as long as possible. I went to 41+4. Of course I was over it and ready to meet my baby but I also wanted it to happen naturally. I wonder of these OBs fully disclose the risks of early induction?
  • Maybe I'm just irritated because ds was induced at a little after 38 weeks for high blood pressure and it was just not a great experience. He was having bad reactions to the pitocin which was scary, I labored for 20 hours which sucked and then when ds was born he hadn't fully developed his suckling and never got to EBF as planned which really got to me. So when I see people have a choice and not take the way better for baby it pisses me off because I didn't get a choice.
  • I agree with PPs - I believe it letting those little guys bake as long as possible.  that being said, I was induced (twice!).  But I was at 42 weeks.

Even then, DS was only 6 lbs 7 oz, and I'm 5'10" so I felt great, not uncomfortable at all.  My doc induced because he was worried that my placenta wouldn't last much longer.

  • My first was exactly on her due date, but I was so crazy at the end, I don't remember much. (Seriously crazy depression whole pregnant with her.)

I remember wanting E out, but it was so much a pregnancy thing as it was a "I'm ready to meet my baby, find our sex, get off bed rest" kind of thing.

Now with A, yes. I fully wanted her out. At like 38 weeks. I was so over being pregnant, in so much pain from my back, and her position, and it was so hot and I was so huge... And I ended up being induced at 41w3d. I think in the last couple weeks, I was relapsing with pregnancy depression again.

    Agreed!
I had DD at 34 weeks because my water broke in the middle of the night.
While she was still in the NICU I had people tell me how lucky I was that I had time to recover before dealing with a newborn.....Are you kidding me??? NICU stays are no joke and I would not wish it on anyone or take the chance of ending up there if I could do anything about it.
  • I am so confused about all of these people whose doctors are inducing them at 38 weeks. I have never even heard of anyone being induced at less than 40 weeks for anything other than a severe medical issue around here. My practice will not induce until you are at least 41+1 with a healthy pregnancy. Both of my cousins live 30 minutes away, went to different doctors than I did, and delivered at different hospitals than I did. They both were induced after 41+1. Maybe it's regional or where you live? I'm situated between two pretty prestigious medical schools that are seven miles apart.

  • Yeah. The girl said it in a brag worthy way.
I mean I would personally have questioned the doctor as I educated myself on my pregnancy and the importance for baby to fully cook. Now she's all wo is me I don't get to see my baby that often. Well you made the choice with your doctor. She's only 20 (very immature 20) and isn't the brightest.

This is kind of getting off onto another topic, but YES!
I have had a preemie who had a 2.5 week NICU stay and a term baby, and let me tell you that the term baby was waaaaay less stressful, and that was even with a toddler running around the house, too. I had the "well at least you get to STTN!" comments, too, and it took everything in me to bite back rude replies and say calmly, "well, I had to get up every 2 hours to pump for 20 minutes because my supply was crap, so..."

BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • I almost have the nerve to post that what her dd is going through is common when babies are born too early but I realize regardless of her decision she doesn't deserve to have baby in the NICU and my post would not be beneficial in anyway at this point.
