Baby Names

How many Ava's do you really know?

I absolutely love Ava but hate that it's been the top name for the last 5-10 years! Is it really being used that often? I only know of one Ava personally. Suggestions of other possibilities?

I considered Avelyn but thought it might be too trendy as well. Aveline is pretty but the pronunciation doesn't sit too well with my last name. Evelyn is an absolute "no" in my book. Should I go back to the drawing board?

  • I work in daycare, and in my classroom there is currently one Ava. (under 1yr). There are quite a few Avery girls, but that's the only Ava I have seen and I have worked in the infant room in the daycare for almost 5 years now.

  • I know 5 personally that are 6 and under. Its too popular for me but id probably feel differently if I only knew one. Just keep in mind it really is that popular. I hate Avelyn and Aveline.
  • My 6 year old niece is Ava and my friends 3 year old is Ava.

  • I hear it quite often. Similar but less common names:
    Eva
    Eve
    Aiofe (ee-fa)
    Nava (nay-va)
    Ivy (my DDS name)
  • Two that I know personally, feel like I've come across acquaintances with a child with the name, but not entirely sure. So I'll stay with the 2 :)

I think it's nice, it's on my middle name list.
  • I know two Avas, ages 3 and 2. I think it's a lovely name.

  • I know two Ava's personally who are not famous. I really like the name Ava Jane.
  • I know a dozen Avas! And as many Ellas and Bellas. I am a first grade teacher with two young children of my own (in preschool classrooms). Please, PLEASE choose something more unique for her. I would suggest you go to the website Nymbler and put in Ava and see what other names come up that you might like.

I know zero Avas. If you love it, use it! I hate popular names, but if we have a girl it will still be Lily.

  • I know two Ava's. How about Avery? I do still think Ava is a beautiful name,
If you really love it then you should keep it. (I know four Bella's so Ava isn't as bad)
  • My 8 year old niece is Ava and I know a 2.5 year old named Ava. That's it.

  •  I don't know any. I think Ava is pretty.

For an alternate, perhaps Ada or Adah?   I just used Adah so I'm partial to it and so far NO ONE has heard of it lol :) Apparently it peaked in popularity in the 1880's.
  • I know 3 Avas.  They are 9, 5, and 2.
  • I know one who is seven and I think there's another one at DD's school.  It's popular but not in the top 10 here.

No. Avery is a BOY name.
Actually, baby name books list Avery as female with origin being French. And some baby books list it as unisex.

But like I said if OP loves Ava she should keep it
  • I know two Avas under five.

  • My best friend has a 9 month old named Ava. She's the only one I personally know. I think it's a beautiful name, but I can understand how the top ranking might turn you off. It wouldn't make my list strictly because of that.

Oh you say a book lists it? Totes makes it a girl name. It is in fact a male name currently trendy on girls. I'm Mobile so can't link but I assure you it's male.
I didn't realize people were so passionate about this. There are a lot of unisex names that are popular, can't keep up. Apologies.
  • My daughter is Ava. I feel like every time we tell someone her name we hear about an Ava they know of. We were just at Disneyland and there was at least 6 other Ava's throughout the day.
  • My cousins name is spelt Aeva. I prefer thay spelling, honestly.
