Cloth Diapering

Play Fort (clearly NCDR)

edited November 2014 in Cloth Diapering
we have a wooden frame from a machine that came to my husband's factory. We are going to put walls and a floor on it and loft in our basement as a little playhouse for the boys in the winter months. I need help deciding how to decorate it or what theme to go with.
We're working on clearing out big spaces in our basement to put their bikes so they can ride in the winter. I thought about trying to make it into a car garage.my dad and grandpa used to be mechanics, so I bet I could dig up some cool stuff from their old shop to decorate with.
My husband suggested just covering the walls with cardboard or big rolls of paper and letting the boys draw over it as they please like an art studio.
I thought briefly about trying to make it look like a pirate ship because they're really into Pirates, but it's going to be a square box and I have no intention of making it look like anything other than a square box, so I'm not sure how well the pirate ship will come off looking in actual execution.
I also thought of maybe a castle, because we could cut the tops of the walls jagged like the stone and that should be pretty easy to make.
Or we could always just painted a bright color and call it a day.
Here's a pic of the crate and the spacewe will be working with. Obviously it still needs some cleaning up. we have a play area with carpeting pieces on the other side of the room, but it can be moved to accommodate whatever we want.don't mind the massive pile of toys on the floor. I started cleaning out stuff they don't use anymore, and the boys decided to "help". I need to finish when they go to bed some night.
Anyway, thoughts? suggestions? I lack creativity big time. We need a (cheap) idea and nothing too permanent because we intend to finish off this basement to give us more room someday when the budget allows.

  • When you say "loft in your basement" do you mean the box is going to be up higher than the floor?  Or am I misunderstanding?  Because you could make it a tree house theme by painting a tree on the wall and keeping the box pretty simple.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah.  I really like Stringy's idea of designing it so they can change it around.  Maybe you could put velcro on the edges and cut pieces of different colored fleece so they make all kinds of different "walls." You could get white fleece and they could decorate it themselves for whatever theme they want.
  • Make the outside walls chalkboard too, and they could decorate to be whatever they wanted?
  • I like the car garage and also lining it with paper to let the boys color as they please. The outside in chalkboard paint would be cool. Then it could become an auto shop, a castle, a house, whatever.

Such a cool thing you're doing for them. I bet they're going to love it!

  • You could always make hard walls for safety and put felt over them.
  • Solid plywood walls covered in felt would be pretty cool to me. Or one felt wall, one cardboard/paper drawing wall? I love the whole idea in general and I'm filing it away for when my two (or more) are older and we look to make our lower level more play friendly.

  • I was on set crew in high school for musicals.  We used to take muslin and staple it to a wooden frame.  If you staple it on fairly tight, you can paint it with latex paint and it'll tighten up into a pretty good wall.

  • Whiteboard paint doesn't clean as easily as actual whiteboard board, just FYI. What about painting it with an undercoat of magnetic paint, then printing off some sheet magnets to go with the themes you're thinking about (pirates, school, garage, etc)?bI am a fan of solid walls or at least sturdy banisters. Felt and fleece will sag. Muslin would give way if someone fell into it. But with solid walls you're going to have more of a challenge with lighting the interior, so that's something to consider.

I think you've posed some great ideas here! It doesn’t sound like you're lacking on the creative side at all ;).
