Glucose test

Hi all! I just had my first OB appointment yesterday at 9 weeks. I went to the lab for blood draw immediately after and the tech handed me GlucoCrush. I didn't have time for the test and said I would come back in the morning. Here I am, just finished my GlucoCrush and I'm wondering if this was supposed to wait?? Maybe the doc put it in the system but I wasn't supposed to complete for a few more weeks. Is this a normal time to knock this out?

Re: Glucose test

  • I believe there are two tests for glucose that they make you take

  • They did a glucose test for me too but did not have to drink anything just blood draw. I don't remember doimg this with my furst until like 18 weeks but I guess they do it at beggining and middle now?
  • I ended up taking one at 7 weeks 3 days. It seemed early for me being that my previous 2 I didn't take until I was further along. But the Dr. was saying that the standards are different now than in previous years.

  • I have never heard of doing it so early. I was just pregnant two years ago and I took the one hour at 28 weeks.
  • I did mine last time at 28 weeks.
  • Same as pp's I didn't do this until later 2nd tri with my last two and I assume the same this time.

  • I just took my 3 hour glucose test, for two reasons:  family history of diabetes and i failed the 1 hour glucose test.

    Just got my results back,
and hopefully they are good enough for now

    Fasting was 76
    1 hr was 173
    2 hr was 161
    3 hr was 122

    Copied this from a webpage.

Abnormal blood values for a 3-hour 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test are:

    • Fasting: greater than 95 mg/dL
    • 1 hour: greater than 180 mg/dL
    • 2 hour: greater than 155 mg/dL
    • 3 hour: greater than 140 mg/dL
I'm 31 with PCOS and He's 30 with no issues.

  • I am not high risk for GD so will do one at 28 weeks.

I am doing it with juice, that is what my midwife has used for over 10 years.... i am allergic to corn, so cant drink it. But midwife told me the glucose drink can make you pop a false positive, especially if you have a low sugar diet. So she does fruit juice.

  • Interesting. My clinic doesn't allow our women to do a glucose test until they are at least 28 weeks along. Not sure why they had you take one so early.
  • Thanks for all your replies! I'm 5'2" and of very normal weight. I'll ask about why it was ordered next time I'm in, but I have a feeling I'll be sitting for another hour at 28 weeks. Maybe they are just extra cautious.

I had to do the 1 hour glucose test last week (week 7) because I have a history of gestational diabetes. Unfortunately, I failed it, so I will be taking the 3 hour soon.
  • I have to do mine early before my 12th week since I had GD in my last pregnancy. OB said if this is negative then I'll still need to do another screen around 28w.
  • I also just failed my 1 hr gtt so I will be taking the 3 hr on friday. I didn't have GD with ds but he was 10# and I'm a plus size momma so they wanted to be cautious.

  • The nurse who did my intake this time around told me they do early glucose testing when nessecary. The reason she brought it up in my case was a family history of thyroid issues she opted to wait because I have never had glucose issues with my previous pregnancies. Maybe your doctor had similar concerns or maybe they just are extra cautious.

I posted this in another thread but I had to do the one hour about a week ago at around 9 weeks.  My doctor wanted me to do it bc I have a lot of diabetes in my family and for some reason my blood pressure has shot up.  I always have low blood pressure, always.  But all of the sudden it is in the 130's which of course makes me nervous.  Well I failed the one hour with a 137 so I'm doing the three hour on Tuesday.  I'm not excited about it at all.  I don't want to be diagnosed with GD but if I have it I have it I will deal with it.  But I REALLY don't want to drink that nasty drink and give blood three times in three hours.  Seriously I don't know why they have to draw so much when if you actually have diabetes you just use a little pricker and a test strip, but whatever.

  • technically you give blood 4 times, fasting and on the hour every hour for three hours :( my poor arms are so sore and weak from Friday. Not trying to make it worse, but it totally sucks. I got the shakes afterwards

  • I'm 9w3d and having a glucose test done on Friday because I have a history of diabetes in my family. It depends on a mommas health.
  • Ugg just had my 3 hour test yesterday and it sucked!!! At first it was okay and I took a bunch of water with me which really helped. The last 15 minutes I started feeling really sick. Cold sweats and like I was going to throw up or pass out. They were ten minutes late on my last test so that really didn't help, but it finally ended. I had a banana with me but I had to go get more food bc that didn't cut it. I honestly don't see how this could be healthy for pregnant women. I had to grab fast food bc I had a dr appt thirty minutes after and my baby's heart rate was 168 which my dr said was probably bc of all the testing then fast food. Anyway it bugs me how hard the end of it was and makes me worry for the baby. There has to be a less dramatic way to do it.

  • This sounds...weird. My doc gave me a requisition form that I had to take into the lab, I had to commit myself to being in the lab for 2 hours. I wasn't allowed to walk around or anything, just had to drink that awful stuff and then sit there for 2 hours. Then they took my blood.

They didn't give me the drink until it was time to do the test (but my lab was great they keep a bunch in their fridge cause they know it's gross)
  • I had my first appointment on Monday, and I am 9w, they didn't do any glucose testing. I just had to pee in a cup and they took about three vials of blood. I did see the bottles of the glucose drink ominously sitting there, though. I was curious when this test happened. At least it looks like I have some time before it!

  • They are doing an early one with me (12 weeks) because my mom is diabetic and DS was large-ish.  Only reason it annoys me this time is because I have to arrange care for DS. My previous OB made me do it 3 times without any high numbers and before my mom was diabetic. SO annoying.

My Doc wants to check in with me at 12 weeks. She didn't mention if they were planning on the one hour test or just checking my urine or blood for levels, but I had GD 9 years ago with my daughter, so I'm high risk this time around. I'm keeping my FX, but have no expectations. I'm prepared for what to expect this time around, so it won't be as scary if it develops.

Was able to keep it in check with diet and exercise until my 37th week, then had to do one shot of insulin before bed for the last three weeks because my overnight fasting levels were just over the mark and we couldn't seem to work them down. DD was born healthy at 8lbs 2oz.
  • Are you allowed to refuse it? I did it last time with DD & it was awful. Test was fine so I wonder if I can refuse this time? I didn't have GD last time, so what are the chances it will change?
  • I already have my glucose meter and am on the diet as of Monday. Bloodwork and urine were enough, but I have PCOS and absolutely expected to have it again. I don't really mind that much, it keeps me healthier during pregnancy and I don't have to go through the "WTF can I eat?!" starving hysteria that accompanied my diagnosis the first time. Christmas cookies are going to be the tough part...

You can refuse it, @sammharrison, but I would suggest talking to your doctor about alternatives. Not having it last time doesn't mean you won't this time and it could be dangerous to not know. They may let you eat/drink something different, or if they're really indulgent, order you a glucose meter and have you monitor your blood sugars for a couple weeks to rule it out by your numbers that way. Worth asking.
