Phasing out pacifiers/bottles at 1yo

A bumpie said they were going to start making pacifiers available only at bedtime/naptime and hoped to have bottles out of the house by the time baby was 1yo. I can't remember who it was, but is anyone else doing this? When do you hope to wean from bottles and pacifiers?

  • I think we can manage the bedtime and nap only for pacifiers, the bottle will be difficult. M doesn't care about sippy cups at all, and we've had them at 'dinner' for a few months now. I know it's early yet.

  • We are planning on trying to wean from the bottle at 1 year. A lot because the formula is $400-$500 per month! I'd like to save that money :). I plan on asking my pediatrician at our 9 month appointment. I'm trying to be more consistent with meals in the high chair too. We are hit and miss with giving her solids.
  • I'm really scared of quitting the pacifier.

  • I was off bottles and during-the-day pacifiers by 1 year with both my olders.  It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought.  With DS1, I just put formula in sippies at about 11 months old.  At first I held him and fed him the sippy like it was a bottle, and then he slowly transitioned to doing it on his own in his high chair. DS2's transition was much easier - he was already holding his own bottles in the high chair (2 kids 15 mos apart, what can I say), so we just switched to sippies and he barely flinched.

The first night we skipped the bedtime bottle, I was scared, but both of my kids just went to bed no problem.  It was no big.

We dropped to crib-only pacifiers at 9 months for all three, and took away the pacifier completely at 18 months.  Again, not nearly as hard as I thought.

I kind of think the earlier you transition, the easier it is for everyone.  But that's just my experience!

    @shellbell3845‌
Yes, the weekend my grandma passed away, she decided that would be a good time to wholly reject it. Only my nips are an acceptable substitute. To say I'm not a fan would be a major understatement!
    1. Ugh
    2. Sorry
    3. Note to self: do not wean from paci and boob on same day

  • So @TyrannosaurusLex‌ if LO only uses the paci at bedtime, that's ok? That's pretty much all LO uses the paci for anymore. It's part of his self-soothing routine.

  • DD stopped bottles at a year except for the one before bed, which we phased out a few months later. I don't think we made real progress with getting her to drink from sippy cups until like 11 months, though. We're already trying to do pacifiers for just sleep and car rides.

  • @TyrannosaurusLex‌ I bought this straw cup on a whim at target and Iove it. The straw is weighted so no matter how the cup is tipped LO can still get water. He surprised me and drank from the straw easily the first time I gave it to him. It will leak a little if there is water in the straw but not much.

  • I got that shark tank sippy at target, too but we haven't used it yet.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

Ok, so let me say that you don't "have" to do any of this. (Some replies sounded almost panicked.) that being said, no bottles at one is ideal and fairly simple to do. You generally wean them off formula around that time anyway. As for pacifiers, I've done them after one at nap time and bed time up until three. I cut them off at three because honestly it's kind of silly past that point. Just please don't panic if you don't do it. It's not going to harm your children. As far as pacis ruining teeth....honestly I've used all kinds and my boys' teeth are fine, but go with what your pedi says to use.
Everything @avswolf said! I didn't mean to sound like bottles/pacis needed to be put away at 1yo! I just was wondering if anyone was planning on it, because I've been thinking about it! I love the sippy cup suggested by @carissalynp
