Waking every hour at night to nurse

My little guy is 6 1/2 months old. He is sleeping in his own room. He usually goes to sleep around 8 and will sleep until about 12 on most nights. He nurses and then sleeps again until 2 or 3, nurses and is usually up every hour after that until he wakes up for the day around 7:30. I typically nurse him every time he wakes up because that is what settles him back into sleep the fastest. Occasionally he just wants his pacifier put back in his mouth, but that happens far less often than feeding. Should I try just rocking him back to sleep instead of automatically offering to breastfeed? I feel like he expects to eat when I pick him up and generally keeps moaning/crying until I do. My husband hasn't been very successful at putting him back to sleep. If my husband tries, he either wakes up and stays awake or I end up going in after awhile of listening to him cry while my husband rocks him, and nurse him back to sleep. Any ideas on how to help him sleep better or do you think this is more of a phase he will grow out of?

Re: Waking every hour at night to nurse

  • He might grow out of it.  He might not.  My baby didn't, so I had to rip the bandaid off with CIO.  The first night was miserable, but by the third night he was only waking up and eating twice a night.

  • I would read the no cry sleep solution if you haven't already. It's normal for BF babies to wake once or twice at night to nurse but otherwise LO is probably doing it out of comfort, to help transition thru sleep cycles. Also, have you started solids?
  • My LO does the same. She has gone a few nights sleeping through from 7-6 without waking up (a whole week)! But then that stopped. So I know she is capable of going vack to sleep on her own and figure she needs me/wants to be comforted right now so I just deal with it for now.
I figure she'll stop needing me soon and I'll miss the midnight snuggles ;)
  • I have been doing a little bit of solids, but not with much success at the moment. I'll have to check that out.
  • Maybe try to stretch out the time between feedings. We used the Ferber method, increasing time by 1/2 hr each night, until we got to 2 feedings per night. I know it's much easier just to nurse them back to sleep, but too frequent feedings actually disrupt their systems and makes it harder for them to get quality sleep.
