I have a quick question - I was talking to a STM the other day and she doesn't use wipes unless there's a poopy diaper.  It seemed strange to me, but do any of you guys do something similar?
I guess I'm in the minority here but we don't use wipes for non-poopy diaper changes. The nurses at the hospital and a few other online resources I've seen (I'm on mobile or I would link) said it's not necessary, and I've never had a problem with it. I do let him air dry a few minutes if the area is wet though.
This is us too. The nurses at the hospital and our pediatrician have said not necessary and dries out skin. My son already has very sensitive skin so its one less thing to irritate him. Ofcourse poopy diapers get wipes. Never had an issue. Only 1 diaper rash in 17 months.

  • I wouldn't buy huge containers/tubes of anything until the baby gets here.  Buy several small tubes/containers of different varieties and try them.  Some things will work and some things won't.  When you find something that does, you can buy a big container.  For example, we have huge bottles of Aveeno lotion because it's a miracle for helping keep his eczema in check.  We have a massive tub of A&D because it works great for mild diaper rashes.  Butt Paste is best for the truly bad rashes.  Aquaphor works for really dry skin that isn't eczema.  Triple Paste never worked for us.

This is not diaper-related, but do yourself a favor and have on hand a bottle of gripe water and a bottle of gas drops.  When your baby is screaming at 2 a.m. because of bad gas pains or an upset stomach, you will be grateful for that.  :)

I don't use a wipe unless the diaper is super wet or poopy. I don't really see the purpose. It's not like the wipe really "cleans" anything if baby's skin is already dry. I figure they don't need more random chemicals on their skin.

Diaper area wash (California Baby brand or Mustela, this is good for messy poop clean up when you don't have the time to give them a full bath)
I assume you clean the poo off as much as you can and then spray this stuff on and wipe it with a washcloth? Sounds like a good idea - I've never heard of this stuff before! :) Do you carry it in your diaper bag too? I wonder if a spray bottle with plain water would be enough, or are the essential oils in this necessary? (not experienced with baby poo)

I think the wipes are probably more of a necessity for baby girls.

I wipe with the wet wipes and then spay this and wipe some more! Sometimes the wipes just aren't wet enough to really get the yuck off.

You could easily use one of those tiny travel sized spray bottles with a homemade mix for the diaper bag. A lot of moms who cloth diaper also make their own wipes so you should be able to find a zillion recipes online. I would caution you to be careful with the amount of tea tree oil you use (if you use it at all). It seems to be a little drying/irritating for some baby's skin.

Edited to add: water alone would probably not be enough. Baby poop can be all kinds of nasty and sticky. The oils help unstick the nastiness.

Yep. My DS had eczema and I used damp wash clothes. My DS never had even one diaper rash. They truly don't need the wipes unless they're dirty. Think about it...you just use plain old toilet paper on yourself, right?
