Nursery wall decals....

Hi! I'm trying to start my nursery... Some of these posts with completed nurseries are making me feel inadequate. I also posted this I nursery gear but I thought i might actually get more responses on my "regular" board. Anyway, I want to purchase a wall decal for my older sons room, possibly a tree of life or maybe the giving tree, if it's not too corny looking. Something that will cover the whole wall across from his bed and then be "over" the bookshelf. There are so many options out there, and some of the reviews are unhelpful. I would like to buy on amazon if possible, just because I trust the website, but I'd be open to other places if recommended by someone on here. One of the ones I like is listed for $74.99 on one site and like, $10 on another. They look exactly the same to me. Are they likely made in the same factories or completely different?

Does anyone have any experience with wall decals? It seems so easy but maybe it's better to paint? Some of the reviews said they didn't stick well, but it might depend on the brand? We painted the room a few years ago with sherwin williams semi gloss semi matte paint if that matters. Thanks in advance for any input you can contribute.

Re: Nursery wall decals....

  • We used this one:

    https://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/SimpleShapes/5912444/cherry_blossom_tree_decal_-_baby_nursery_elegant_style/handmade/housewares/wall_decor/vinyl

I have no prior experience with decals, and I was hesitant to pay this much for it. But it was/is awesome. It was so easy to apply, at first we were scared because it was a million pieces, but the directions are crystal clear. It's impossible to mess up. It's easy to remove. And literally every person who walks in the nursery thinks 1) it's painted on or 2) we hired a professional.

Again, I can't comment on any other decal, but I would be skeptical of a $10 product.

  • We have used wall decals in my son's room but I couldn't remember where we purchased them from.  I think it was a Groupon or Living Social deal that we took advantage of.
Anyways, we are doing another decal for our upcoming addition and we used Etsy.  Both decals we have used were very simple to apply and we love the look it gave to the room!  I highly recommend Etsy.  It's a safe a trustworthy site that has tons of design options!
Coincidentally, we are also doing a tree in baby girl's room but with pink owls.
One last thing, the finish of your paint does not matter.  As long as your wall is freshly washed, all decals should stick to any surface.

  • The texture of your walls makes a huge difference. Essentially, if you have texture, the decals won't adhere as well and won't look very good.

If you are looking for super easy painted wall mural, try a stencil kit. I did one for my older son's room and it was very easy and looks awesome:
    https://www.mywonderfulwalls.com

That website has both stickers and stencil kits. You can order the paint right with the kit or get your own at a hobby store. The stencils are like big stickers so you can just stick them on the wall, and paint in the cut-outs. It is essentially paint-by-numbers.
  • I'm going to second https://www.mywonderfulwalls.com. We got a beautiful music note tree & it wasn't too hard to put up. My H & a friend of ours put it up in 20 minutes or so.

  • Definitely second the recommendation for Etsy! I've bought decals from different sellers on there before and have never had issues.
  • I don't have any experience with huge decals, but I put these gold polka dotted ones up in Emerson's closet. I'm obsessed! They're from Etsy and were super easy to apply (and take off).

  • Agree with pp on etsy. We love how much customization it can offer. Here's what we got... Wall Decals for Nursery Baby Room Designs Tree Branch with birds Wall Sticker Decals Home Decor Art by DecalIsland - Tree Branch SD 019 by DecaIisland on Etsy https://etsy.me/1hGobwh
  • I bought a decal for my daughters room off of etsy. It hasn't arrived yet but one of my friends gave great reviews. We ordered some branches with leaves and birds to put over the crib . It was completely customizable. It only cost $30 plus shipping. It is a smaller decal though. The shop owner is coocoodecal if you want to check out. Good luck.
  • I got awesome safari animal wall decals on etsy. They're small, and I put them along the base board but they look so cool. It's like an animal parade and you can order them in any color. They were under $30 and covered the border of two walls. I'd check etsy.
  • +1 for Etsy in general - though I've never gotten decals there, I have done about half my Christmas shopping there for the past 2-3 years and it's been great. I've gotten some really beautiful handmade things.

  • @brittandjp I am planning on doing the same thing for our nursery closet with the gold dots. Can I ask how you went about spacing them and how many you used? Thanks!

  • I only use the vinyl decals.  I have bought them off etsy.com and https://dalidecals.com/

Both were excellent and look amazing.

For what you are describing, I'd it expect it to cost $70+

Happy to hear all these good things about Etsy decals.  I haven't ordered mine yet (the one I want includes a name and we aren't 100% sure), but it seems to get good reviews :).  Love that I can totally customize it with my nursery colours (purple and grey).

  • I have a girlfriend in retail store design and she said that good quality wall decals are not cheap to print so I would be weary of the super cheap ones, you don't want it peeling off. I paid $80 for a tree scape that covers one wall of the nursery (6trees) on Etsy (designeddesigner) and the quality is really good and went up pretty easily.

  • I just ordered a tree decal from Etsy as well, shop is called DecalLab. The decal shipped really quickly and we customized everything to the nursery color scheme (75 bucks incl shipping) It took us about an hour to put the decal up, but it is a floor to ceiling (almost 9 feet) and went up very easily.

Honestly, I just started placing them in the top corner and randomly placed them about. I didn't want them to be in an perfectly lined up pattern. I used the entire sheet of stickers on that half of the closet (the other half has a built in shelving closet system so you don't see the wall). There were 60 2 inch dots in my pack. I hope this helps, @stoptherword!

  • I ordered a wall decal from Etsy for $80(ish). It included four white birch trees, 6-8 pink birds, leaves for the trees, and a brown baby deer. My husband put most of it up and it looks amazing. I would highly recommend it.
  • Our decal came in the mail today ! Husband and I are about to attempt to put it up. Hope it's easy!
  • The decal turned out really nice! I'm very happy. Don't pay attention to the crib . It's doubling as baby storage ATM.

This is false - We live in an older house that still has plaster walls. Tried 3 different brand of decals and they peeled right off.
