None of their business?

At my 6 week everyone but the receptionist asked me what my plans were for birth control. Two nurses and the doc that is. Jesus people I'm not 16 I know how this works. Also look at my chart it took years to conceive both my boys. I felt weird discussing my husbands upcoming vasectomy with everyone. It just seems like it's not rely their business to ask. A " any questions/needs for birth control? " would suffice. Anyone else get the Spanish Inquisition/ birth control edition?

  • The nurses asking is weird I'll grant you, but BC is a normal topic of discussion with your doctor at the 6week PP appointment.
  • The nurse and doctor asked me. I didn't feel like anyone gave me any grief about. When I told the doctor I wasn't going back on bc all did was warn me that I could get pregnant even though I hadn't gotten my period yet.
  • I was asked at least 10 times by the dr and nurses before I left the hospital. We have a 12 year gap between kids...I think we know what we are doing here. I didn't mind the asking as much as I minded them pushing an iud. It was like they were trying to sell me on it. I found it odd.
  • Well it is there business, the nurses probably ask so they can inform the doctor before they go into your room incase they grab literature on the type you were thinking or something, or they were just being friendly, talking about birth control is like talking about the weather to them.
  • At first I thought you were going to say it was other people aside from your doctor and nurses then I would sympathize. I'm pretty sure it's standard for birth control options to be brought up at every woman's post partum appt. If you don't want it, just say so. Your husband's vasectomy is not going to be in your medical record so they couldn't have known otherwise.

  • Yeah I had that talk and then promptly forgot and had unprotected sex. I imagine they are trying to help prevent this worry that I might be ku again.

  • It's not weird, I was asked by the nurse and doc at my 6 week pp appt. today I went in to get an IUD inserted and still was asked about it. It's their job.

  • It's the redundancy I found weird. Like give it up people I'm well versed in how to not get pregnant. Also nurses clearly didn't tell dr or each other so what was the point.

  • I'm a nurse, at a hospital though. I always ask questions that I know the doc probably asked because if I get out to the desk and nothing's in the chart, I don't know if a script was supposed to be there? And the docs leaving the floor now. So I ask the patient and grab the chart. If its not in there, I can grab the doc even as he's leaving and remind him, "So-so, in with whatever, being discharged this morning, she mentioned a prescription for blah blah? I didn't see it in the chart?" And show him. Bam! Got my script!!
  • It's not so wierd at the 6 week check up but we were asked within 3 minutes after meeting the doctor that preformed out c-section while I was in full blown labor! Although we had twins # 6&7 , there is 12 years between our twins and the 5 th child , the two oldest are young adults . We felt like the question at that time was odd , inconsiderate ,bad timing , & because not my obgyn , really not valid .
  • While I understand completely your point , & doctors asking questions pertaining to birth control , this doc was NOT asking for after care ! She asked while contractions were 1 minute apart and her tone etc... Were not professional . Had it been professional I would not have an issue , which I really don't anyway .
  • I got asked if I wanted my tubes tied before going into my c/s and told multiple times at the hospital during recovery about my options for bc. I didn't find it odd. although I kind of chuckled at the tube tying b/c I had just told the nurse that it was my first and that we were hoping for more. I'm assuming it's just standard that she had to ask it and mark it off on a sheet.

  • @Twinplus5‌ I could be wrong, but I'm assuming the reasoning was like what @justcricket said. She probably wanted to make sure you weren't looking to get your tubes tied during the procedure and whatnot.
