Firstly OP.. Thanks for coming out of lurker world... Bumper pad awareness is a huge thing for me so I immediately clicked when I saw the thread. As always I was ready to get on my soap box. Thanks for being informed and stating that you aren't going to use them!!
Secondly, there are some beautiful quilts/blankets that can be draped or "thrown" beautifully over the edge to give you that "complete" bedding look. A little monogrammed/decorative pillow sitting in the corner can also be a great way to fill the space while you wait for baby and both can be used once your LO transitions into a toddler bed! I'm actually seeing more of this in the baby design world and Pinterest as people continue to opt out of dangerous pads.
The bottom option used a bumper/rail cover but it would only be in contact with the baby when they are standing... I have less of an issue with this so long as it is secure. Cute sheets/skirt and a quilt and pillow would be my choice.
As always she is so lovely. her. I was going to suggest this too and you can make the nursery really cute looking for your nursery photo shoots (and then, gasp, return things you don't need if you really do get hormonal and go overboard at PBK).
However, OP you need to sack up a little and not get so butt-hurt over a few internet opinions. You'll learn. Plenty of us like stuff because it is cute or only buy it because it is for show but would never compromise baby. @jaztastic buys everything from Dolce & Gabbana for example.

I actually don't think it's weird to go see the nursery when I'm visiting a newborn. If I know the mom has put a lot of time into it, I enjoy a little tour.
If you're coming to see my newborn you need to bring some food, girl. From a nice restaurant. The question is, can you afford to see this baby?
