Trying to Get Pregnant

Charting and BBT question

today is only my third day of temping. Forgive me if this sounds stupid but... Lol... First day the thermometer beeped and read 97.6. 2nd day beeped and read 96.8. Today beeped and read ...94.2????! I thought... Hmmm that's weird so I put the thermometer back in and the temp continued to rise to 97.2 and then stopped.

so I guess my question is... 1) should I take the thermometer back? Is it broken? I'm thinking yes. 2) should I delete the temps from previous days and start all over or just continue along?

Have you been taking your temp at the same time? Have you gotten at least three hours of sleep? How much did you move around before taking your temp? Are you temping vaginally or orally?

ETA- 94.2 is extremely low though

  • Yeah, it was probably a glitch. Did you make sure it was far back in your mouth?

  • Sounds like an error to me. The first thermometer I got - generic Walgreens brand I think - didn't work well at all. Try taking your temp three times in a row right up against your tounge and if its all over the place ditch it and get a new one.

  • Oh um also, with those temps, it seems you are using a regular thermometer. Go buy a BBT. It measures to the hundredth degree, so it is more accurate.
  • I am using a bbt, but that is what it is reading. I am taking it orally... But I'll try taking three readings in a row to check for accuracy like advised. And apparently I need to switch to vag ... I've been taking it orally....

My times were 5am, 6am and 6:30. I've made it my 'first thing before I even get out of bed' practice and I put it in my nightstand drawer so I am not moving around a lot before.

And yeah the 94 reading seemed so low to me as well and that was why I knew it was wrong ad kept it in until it got up to the new reading. It's just weird to me that it gave the beep before it is done temping...
  • And I wonder why my bbt is not giving me that extra number..... ? I think i need to return it. It was a cheapie from target - which I decided on after reading that they were "all the same and not to spend the money on a more expensive one bc it wouldn't matter". Opinions on that advice? Maybe I was steered wrong...?

I bought an $8 from Walmart. If it's still the beginning of your cycle and you won't be ovulating for a while, I personally would disregard those first three temps, and start temping vaginally tomorrow. If you still have wonky temps, buy a new thermometer next cycle.

    Edit- spelling
  • And should I still temp vaginally while I am menstrating?

I'm on day 18, I just started charting to work all the kinks out so that my next cycle would be accurate ... Good thing too lol!! I figure I'll just disregard anything prior to my day 1 when that comes... Assuming I've figured it all out by then...

If you're already on CD18, I would consider this cycle a practice cycle to just get into the habit of temping.

Once I get my period, I stop temping. Once it's over (or around CD7), I resume temping.
  • Good plan. Also, w/ recent death in family and stress ... This cycle is likely to be screwy anyway. Now... One more question.... Should I be concerned w/ not getting that last number? It's not a regular thermometer, it's basal body..

Just wait and see how temping vaginally goes. If you always have a temp evenly at the tenth of a degree, I would buy a new one.

BBTs do not have to read to the hundredth degree, but some of them do.

The difference between a BBT and a fever thermometer is that BBTs read to .1 and fever thermometers read to .2. The hundredth degree probably will not give you any more reliable data because a temp shift is always more than .1 degree.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thank you for all your help! I'm going to continue the practice chart for the remainder of this cycle with that thermometer, it seems to give stable readings vaginally but is all over the place orally.... Prob user error!
  • I temp vaginally and do it every day, right through AF, cause I'm weird like that and I like to not have gaps in the data. Also... It seemed way less nasty when I realized the thermometer doesn't go in nearly as far as the tampon is in at that time.
