@hikerlady If you're Canadian, the email I wrote might be useful to you to send to friends and family as I included info about where to get the flu shot for free in many different provinces/cities as well as links to government sources of info for those who want to do their own research on risks, benefits and myths.
If you pm me your email address I can forward you the email.
I got one for the first time when I was pregnant with DD but have not gotten one yet this year just because I keep forgetting to. I am going to get mine with DH who is a big baby. My parents (who do watch my kids) are not getting one and that's fine with me. The newborn is going to be with me 100% of the time and Adeline has already been vaccinated against this years strains.

@CogDis You can still get the flu with a flu shot, and therefore still be contagious before symptoms even if you had one.
True...but your chances of getting it are way lower. And it will likely not be as severe.
Exactly. You can still die in a car accident too, but wearing my seatbelt increases my chances or surviving and if I do get into an accident chances are I wont go through my windshield. I see vaccines as the same thing. Its not 100% but its a damn good precausion.
Not interested in debating... just saying that you can ask people to get flu shots all you want, but there is still a chance, and even if it is lower and less severe, still transmitable and scary for an infant.
Not taking my chances, my inlaws always get the shot, and I went with my parents to Walgreens to get theirs. I am just loving that mine and most insurance companies cover preventive care at 100% so my family could protect themselves.
Can I just add how I think its funny how many people were so freaked out over Ebola but not the flu, which kills more people every year, and funny how there is even a vaccine to prevent such devastation.
I got mine at my OB's office. They gave me one without preservatives since I am pregnant. My 3 year old got the mist and I am still hassling my husband to get his.....but hopefully he will have that done this week!
I had my flu shot and haven't had any issues; baby is doing fine and so am I. I think most doctors (and the CDC) recommend it during pregnancy. You shouldn't get the nasal spray though. Pregnant ladies are more at risk for complications from the flu due to the weakened immune system. There's also a risk of birth defects if you have a fever (which often comes with a flu) during pregnancy. What are your sisters and friends warning you about?
I agree with you that it's important to get the flu shot, but a fever at this point in pregnancy would not create birth defects with baby as all vital organs and such have formed. It's not good for baby if mom gets a fever but it's not going to create a birth defect after first trimester, even after 8 weeks.

Also-It can help to explore why your sister or family doesn't want you to be vaccinated. People previously (Not anymore!) DID get influenza from the shot so they may be well meaning but mis-informed. Since 2006 there has been a major push public health wise to vaccinate pregnant women to protect them and their unborn babies--and the evidence shows it is effective. So exciting.

@hikerlady and @CrazyCornball as per my conversation with my insurance company, if I don't get it at my GP or OB, I get to pay out of pocket for it. But if I still can't by my next OB appt, I'll probably say f it and go there.
This happened to me too. I have an appt at Walgreens in an hour. I tried three times at my OB! My insurance said if I do it at the minute clinic instead of just the pharmacy then it's covered but if not it is only $32 so I'll just get it either way. I'm also one of those that has never had one before but if doc says do it, I'm doing it.
L&D gave me mine when I was there a few weeks ago. They insisted I get it and I needed a current one anyway so I was happy to get it. DS is also attending preschool at a public school so there's no way he was going without one (he's always gotten one regardless, though). He already has enough issues with his allergies and asthma so I'm gonna do whatever I can to help make that easier for him, especially when his pediatrician and allergist both tell me that's their opinion on what's best for him. That's always been the best choice for our family so that's what we'll stick with, especially since DS was born during RSV season and this LO will be too.
OP, Don't avoid getting a flu shot because anyone other than a medical professional told you not to get it. Whether you get it or not should be a discussion and agreement between you and your healthcare PROFESSIONAL, not your sisters and friends. I would hope you wouldn't trust your prenatal care to anyone but a licensed professional so why would you trust your own care to someone that wasn't licensed either? Your health is going to influence the health of your baby so you need to make sure you're well educated about your decision to get a flu shot or not before you decide your sisters and friends are experts.

It's so hard for me to make an appointment to get a needle. But this reminded me that I had to take DD to get hers. So we ran over this afternoon and a combo of bubbles and smarties meant very little crying and she was nice enough to hold my hand while I got mine.
I've gotten mine! I got it about a month ago and I felt perfectly fine afterwards. My insurance didn't cover it at CVS but it was only $30 and totally worth it to me. I'd rather have the shot and not need it than get the flu down the line and regret not receiving it.
I battled with this too, big time. Kept changing appointments with my doctor, wondering how safe it is as there isn't much research. But I remembered the one time I had flu and how sick I was, and thought how that would be being pregnant, also the risk to baby.
Had mine yesterday morning, feel fine, arm is still a bit sore but ok.

There is an egg-free preparation so even those who have hx of egg allergy can get the flu shot! YAY!
