Mucus plug

so I know this is a tmi post, sorry in advance. Today I've had a lot of stretchy yellow tinged discharge that is odorless. I know that an increase is common in pregnancy, but also that you could lose your mucus plug in pieces. Is there a way to tell the difference? Sorry again, but I'm just worried I may be losing it bc this is different for me.

Re: Mucus plug

  • From what I remember the MP is mucous like, hence the name, and it sounds like you're describing CM which as you said is normal. Keep in mind that even if you are losing your MP it can regenerate so it's not a sign you're in labor unless you have other labor symptoms like cramping.

  • MP can regenerate, so if that's what it is, no need to worry. I'd be concerned if there was blood &/or cramping, but otherwise, it's fine.

If your discharge continues to be unusual for you, it can't hurt to get checked for infection. It's totally normal to have increased discharge BUT if your discharge suddenly seems different from your normal pregnancy discharge -- color change, or especially odor/itching-- IMO it's worth getting checked out. They may very well tell you it's normal. But (for example) BV can cause preterm labor, and can have no obvious symptoms.

FWIW, what you're describing doesn't sound like BV - sounds more like mucus (and CM is cervical mucus, which is what the mucus plug is made of) BUT I can't say what's going on over the internet -- hence my advice to get it checked out.

  • I've always noticed mine is usually like a big lump of jelly. Closer to my due date it would be tinged with blood, but I've noticed I've lost a bit already this pregnancy, but no blood. Freaked me out a bit but everything else is fine so I'll just watch it for now.
