I am so upset that I failed my 1 hour glucose test.. Now have to take the 3 hour one.. Anyone have to do the 3 hour that can tell me what exactly you do?
I hear you do the same thing as the 1hr test. You just get your blood drawn every hour. (but I dont know for sure)
Good luck

I'm just upset because I have really bad anxiety and now I have to go through worrying about not passing again. I passed when I was preg with my daughter. (I know every pregnancy is different)
Same thing happened to my good friend and she passed the 3 hour. I am living abroad and they only do a 3 hour. I need to fast, so thankfully my appointment is first thing in the morning, and they draw blood every hour for the 3 hours. I'm up next Tuesday! Wishing you the best on your next test. I don't think you have anything to worry about, it's very common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3.

Do you drink the same amount of the "poison"? Lol
@msjennbbc I took the 3 hour test twice when I was pregnant with my DD1. It's a fasting test, so I think you can't eat after midnight the night before your test. Then you'll go to the doc/lab, get your fasting blood drawn, drink the drink (same size container, higher concentration of sugar), then you'll have your blood drawn every hour for the next 3 hours. There are a total of 4 blood draws: fasting blood draw as soon as you go in, first hour after drinking the drink, second hour after drinking the drink, then the third hour after drinking the drink.
Good luck with your test and I'm sure you'll be fine!
I failed the one hour. I am not going to lie I had a hard time with the 3 hour! you have to fast so that sucked and they took my blood four times, once at the start and then once every hour. I found it best to rotate arms but I did have some bruising. I brought lots of books and made sure to bring food for after--I crashed really hard after and was sick the rest of the day and all night. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! BTW I passed the 3 hour no problem.
Thank you all for your words of advice! I guess I should just suck it up and not worry too much.. Things could always be worse right? I'll definitely try the switching arms thing!
With my 1st I passed the 1 hr. With my second I failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hr. The 3 hour was difficult for me. This was because it wasn't done at my OB's office it was done where they do all of the blood draws for the hospital. I was a bit light headed when I got there from fasting and they put me in this tiny little booth for the first draw. The woman taking my blood was AWFUL and freaked me out pretty badly. I almost passed out so they moved me to a room and the rest of it went totally fine. I think as long as you are in a comfortable chair/place it is really no big deal at all.
Moral of my long story, lol: As long as you are relaxed and comfy, it is really no big deal at all

Sorry to hear that. I do know many women fail the one hour but pass the three hour.
GD isn't fun, but at least after this you'll know if you have it and get proper treatment.
This.
The one hour is a SCREENING test, meaning there are a significant amount of FALSE positives (healthy women told they may have a disease and so they get a confirmation or diagnostic test. The 3-hour is the diagnostic test).
The three hour is a DIAGNOSTIC test, meaning that if it is negative you are out of the woods. You most likely do NOT have GD but need to confirm. Good luck!

I failed my 1 hour with DD very miserably. GD is common in my family so this was not a surprise. Barely passed the 3 hour and had to eat a diabetic diet but didn't have to check my blood sugar. I just had to look for certain symptoms and things the rest of my pregnancy. This time around My doctor is having me skip the 1 hour since it runs in my family and my history with DD. It really isn't bad just take a book and a phone charger haha
I just got word I failed the one hour I have to do the 3 hour. I mean how does sugar even process in your body if your just sitting there??? Very upset over here and I just cried out of frustration.

If your body is able to process the sugar correctly, it will. If it can't, it won't. Seems basic, but that's the whole premise of the test. I'm actually surprised at the number of women who's doctors let them take the drink home and come in for the test as that can really skew the results. The point is for everything to be controlled (sugar intake, energy output, etc.) to get an accurate assessment.
I had GD with both sons (and even ended up on insulin twice). It's not fun, but I was strict with my diet and had two text book pregnancies, deliveries and two very healthy boys. I take my glucose test again this week (already passed once at 12 weeks), and I'm fully prepared to have GD again. If it goes undiagnosed, it's REALLY dangerous for the baby, so I get discouraged when I see all these gals not taking this (admittedly, super annoying) test seriously. I understand many of them are following doctors orders, but from what I know, I might research it more and be strict about the test to make sure I got an accurate reading.
If so many women fail the one hour test, why wouldn't they just make the 3hr one mandatory? That seems like an awful waste of money and unnecessary stress put onto us mothers.

Many pasd the one hour and don't have to go through the 3 hour

Yea I understand, I guess it just makes more sense to me to do the 3hr test over the 1hr to give a definitive pass or fail result, if so many women don't even pass the 1hr in the first place.
Because the three hour is more time intensive, requires more blood draws and costs more money. The screening test we have is inexpensive and effective. 98% + pregnant women pass the 1-hr.

I recently just failed my just failed my 2nd testing and have been told I have GD.
If you fail the 2nd test then you fail. Theres nothing you can do about failing and its not your fault if you do.
GD is not a death sentence even though it might sound like it.
When I went to it I felt sick the whole time. I brought some water and lightly sipped on it. I also didn't chug my glucose drink because when I did the first time I tried taking the 3 hour test I puked everywhere. So drink it as slow as you can for the five minutes they give you. Also I agree with others and have them switch arms.
Your blood will be taken 4 times. First time is your fasting blood to get a baseline of where your sugar normally is. After that you will drink the glucose drink and have your blood taken every hour on the hour for 3 hours.
Good luck!

They did away with the one hour test where I live. It's all the 3 hour one now. It's a rough test and I felt sick the rest of the day, but I guess results are more accurate.
I hope you pass. I failed my 1 hour but passed my 3 hour. With my son I had GD so I'm praying I pass my second screening in three weeks. Just try not to eat lots of sweets the few days before hand, my OB said it can spike your sugars.
Just an FYI, the 3 hour glucose test actually takes 4 hours total:(
I failed my 1 hour with my 3rd pregnancy and had to take the 3 hour, which I passed.
I passed my 1 hour for this pregnancy on Monday due to better breakfast choices. I did not want to sit in the lab for 4 hours with a 17 month old. That would be a nightmare!
agh! I just hope it goes well. I think my main concern is drinking that drink again and puking everywhere after having an empty stomach! What happens if you puke?

Why would it take 4 hours? Mine only took 3 hours with DD. Also, my doctor said to fast for both the 1 and 3 hour. You got to eat prior to testing?

I'm also confused @animalcrckr For me, from the start of the first baseline blood draw to the 4th and last blood draw, it took 3 hours and 15 minutes. (5 minutes or so to take initial blood draw and test, 5 minutes to drink the liquid, and 1 hour in between each blood draw)
The lab I go to does not use the rapid read machines for the fasting glucose so you have to wait 30-45 minutes before you can even start the 3 hour test. Maybe other labs do it differently, which is highly likely since I'm in a different country. And for the record, the 1 hour glucose screening test is NOT a fasting test. Yes, you can eat breakfast. However, I would skip the pop tart and OJ.
My doctor told me I could eat before my 1 hour, but I read about so many people that couldn't! So weird how different doctors have different...preferences? She said eating made it a little easier to keep down, which it did. Still waiting for results, I did the test at the hospital lab on Monday
Yes, mine as well didn't tell me not to eat before the 1 hour and I was only slightly elevated so I feel like eating before made me fail.. We will see what she wants me to do now that I puked at the 3 hour..
My midwife office doesn't do a one hour. They only do a two hour. I don't have to do it until 28 weeks though, and Im dreading it.
My doctors office only had me do the 2 hour test too: initial blood draw, drink stuff and blood draw hour later, wait another hour then 3rd and last blood draw. I never had just a one hour test. Not sure why...
Yeah it is odd how it differs so much between drs. I just called mine and they said they want me to try again. Ugh. I already know I'm just going to throw up again. Why go through all that stress and embarrassment just for the same result?
I had to fast for my 1 hour test with both DS and this time, drank the drink at home (after fasting since dinner), and went in to the doctor to have blood drawn exactly one hour later.
I don't get how it works if you do not fast. Wouldn't other things you eat sway the results?
So sorry you are going through this. I completely understand the stress this is causing you. Try your best to relax. You can't control the outcome so there is no use stressing over it.
I failed my 1 hour so miserably they decided to skip the 3 hour and just label me as GD. I have been seeing an Endo and dietician for a week and a half now and have to draw blood 4x a day as well as watch my food intake. I should add I have a phobia of needles so needless to say this has added a great about of stress and anxiety when I was first diagnosed. I am slowly getting better with it. Saw my endo yesterday and she was pleased with my numbers. She believes we can just treat this through diet and not have to go the insulin route. I have to go back for a follow up next week. FX for good news!
Thinking of you and hope you do well at your 3 hour!
