Resisting the breast in the afternoon

One of my 4 month old twins has started getting fussy (screamy) at the breast, especially in the afternoon. Usually if I put her in the baby carrier (mei tai) I can eventually get her to nurse but there may still be a lot of screaming. Any of the traditional holds while sitting down seem to be out of the question. I don't think it's a let down problem. It's not an issue at night or in the morning usually. Weighed feedings in the late morning show that she takes is a good amount of milk then so I think she gets enough when she deigns to feed. I read that if you feed them when they're sleepy they may not remember to resist and that seems to be true, I've had luck with that. I guess what I'm hoping for here is that someone will say it's a phase that passes or offer other tips. I don't want to always have to have the carrier handy, nor go through all that screaming before she'll latch on. Thanks!

Re: Resisting the breast in the afternoon

  • Sorry I don't have any specific advice other than to say that everything babies do (and don't do) is a phase and will pass.

I know for my DD she was super distracted around 4 months while nursing. Unless I was in a dark, quiet room it was really hard to get her to take a full feeding before she'd pull off to look around. If I tried to force it, she'd just get mad. It was annoying, but it only lasted a week or so.

  • My LO had bad reflux that was worse in the afternoons. She wasn't spitting up but her throat was raw. We got medication for her and she did alit. better.
  • My LO just started this at 7.5 months old. It's at the feed when I get back from work. No advice I'm afraid, but I'm there with you.

  • I asked the nurse who leads a lactation support group and she said baby may be getting overtired and building up a sleep debt by afternoon. I'll try making sure she gets enough napping in in the morning. Thanks for commiserating. :)
