Paleo mamas?? Obv NBR

Ok some of you came out to support Ashley on her GF thread and I had to ask... how did you make the transition to paleo?  I love reading Mark's Daily Apple and while dairy and I get along fine I am really interested in dropping grains.  I just don't know how to do it consistently, especially with a husband that thinks pizza is a food group and a DD whose first food-related word was cracker.  Do you all have spouses that are on board?  I was hoping to do it and amaze him with all of my benefits into doing it too but I keep falling off the wagon with all the bready-happiness in my house.

Any tips?

  • I transitioned gradually because the all or nothing approach didn't work for me. Initially I did a whole 30, but I got to the "end" of it and I just wanted all the pizza, so to ease into it and stay in it, I followed a different plan. For about a week I just gave up gluten, the next week or so I added refined sugar to my banned list, after that I cut out corn, and I do alright with dairy, but I started to limit that a bit after about a month. We do eat white potatoes and rice about once a week. I do all our grocery shopping and cooking, so keeping the junk out of the house hasn't been hard for me. DH isn't paleo, but he is when he's home. DS is but doesn't know it yet. The best advice I ever got was, "don't let perfection be the enemy of good." So, if you started out your day with a great paleo breakfast but slipped when someone brought cookies in to work, don't just "shit the bed" so to speak. Try to make the next thing that crosses your lips a whole real food.

On the cookie aspect, there are some great "paleo treat" recipes out there that really helped me transition too. I also made "paleo bread" in the beginning as well because I really didn't know what I was going to find to replace my sandwich.

It's not a super easy transition, especially when people around you look at you like you have three heads when you tell then what you eat, but once you fully make the transition the way you feel makes up for any weird looks you may get. Along with the added bonus of clear skin, white teeth, healthy hair, and easy weight management. I started following a paleo diet and lifestyle (I used to be a chronic cardio person too) about 6 months before getting pregnant with DS, so around dec 2011.

  • Thanks so much for writing all that @bennikki! I think that is how I'll have to go, more gradually. I'm also type a and have been working on not throwing in the towel every time I eat something junky. All good advice :-) I'll keep ya posted on how it goes!
