Flying while pregnant???

Hello everyone!! I just had a quick question for anyone who has flown before while pregnant.

My family is planning a baby shower for me in New Orleans in feb by then I'll be 31 weeks. Is it safe for me to go??

I'm originally from New Orleans (just a 45 min flight from where Iam now)

Re: Flying while pregnant???

  • Pregnant women fly right through there pregnancy it's perfectly safe. Unless you have health issues and your OB suggests not to. Most doctors recommend you not to fly somewhere around 34-36 weeks. You have to speak with your own OB for their reccomendation.

  • Generally speaking, it is considered safe to fly until 36 weeks (https://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-fly-during-my-third-trimester_2599.bc); however you should absolutely let your doc/midwife know of your travel plans in case there are any other health reasons that should be taken into consideration.

I'm a FTM but have always just heard to make sure you get up and walk during a flight (especially late in pregnancy) rather than staying seated too long (pregnant woman are more prone to blood clots).

  • Some airlines won't let you on if you don't have a note from your OB after 32 weeks. I had a friend who was big at 30 weeks and wasn't allowed on the plane because she didn't have a note. FYI!
  • I flew right about there for a baby shower too. It was uncomfortable, but sounds like your flight will be short. My OB wrote me a short note in case anyone questioned how far along I was. I just requested to have a hand pat down and make sure to use the restroom before take off.

    No worries!

Oh--some airlines have policies against flight attendants lifting luggage. So if you will be needing to get your luggage into an overhead bin-find a friendly looking passanger if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.
  • I would ask your doc about the time frame. I just got back from a trip and we flew. I opted out of going through the machines and the tsa people were really nice about it. They scan your bag like normal and pat you down. They were both excited to pat down my belly and tell me about their grandkids.
  • Make sure you drink extra water on the flight. Flying is very dehydrating. You should be physically fine unless the doc has said no travel. I was a flight attendant for united Airlines. I've helped many people with their bags I'm sure you won't have issues getting someone to help you lift it into the overhead bin.
  • 31 weeks is fine, but again it depends on each person. Keep your doctor posted, in case they have any concerns

  • Ditto what's been said esp since it's such a short flight.

I just got back from a trip that was 6 hrs each way and it wasn't awful but it wasn't that fun. I
Couldn't really get comfortable and I made a point to get up once each hour and use the restroom so I wasn't sleeping :(

As long as you're prepared you'll be just fine... have fun !
  • I flew twice while pregnant with DD.  My OB just had me come in before hand and get a quick check first.

  • Ask your OB/midwife.  The last flight I took while pregnant with DD was at 36 weeks.  When I told my OB about my plans for the flight, she said we'd play it by ear, and when I got to that point in my pregnancy she was fine with me going.  I had no issues with the airline (Southwest), but I carried small so they probably did not think I was as far along as I was just by looking at me.

The best part was that I got to get on the plane first (a huge plus when flying Southwest).
This, except I was HUGE.  Also, I talked them into letting me preboard.  At the gate they took one look at me and gave me a blue sleeve for my ticket.  Before we took off, the flight attendants offered me a drink or anything I needed.  They gave me extra snacks, and I think stopped to ask if I needed anything like 3 times during the flight.  I felt like a VIP.  And I was seated in the front row next to the bathroom which was very helpful

  • My midwife has said anything under 6 hours should be fine. She recommended opting out of the full body scan and drinking lots of water. I've always wanted to go to New Orleans. Just mention it to your doctor and have fun!!
