June 2015 Moms

Any teacher moms out there?

My husband and I were trying to conceive so that my due date would be in the summer so that I would not have to take any time off from school. The teacher whose classroom is next to me just delivered in Sept and finding a suitable sub has been a nightmare for her. I feel so bad for those students because they seriously have learned nothing from the sub and almost burned the chemistry lab down. I do not want that for my students. I was lucky to get my BFP on Oct 21st, and my EDD is June 24th.

  • Well, that's sad! I'm a long term sub and I've been in for two maternity leave jobs and nothing has burned down! We tried to time our IVF around summer break, too. I have the same EDD as you!

  • Well, good to know there are some good long-term subs out there :-)
Maybe I'm just a control freak, idk. My students are like my kids too and I don't trust them with just anyone.
  • Yes I teach 6th grade English! This is my first year and I am due the Sunday before the last inservice day of work, so I *should* make it through the year. The lady down the hall from me is expecting twins in March and the choir teacher is due two weeks after me!

  • I teach middle school history. My due date is June 20! So I should only have to take off a bit in August.
I've started to worry ab getting sick in class though.
  • Yup!  I'm a music teacher!  My EDD is June 17th.  I am so fucking happy that it worked out this way for us.  I didn't try to time it this way at all.  We decided to go see the RE in August and I figured that it would take a while for us.  I thought I would be getting a late summer/early fall baby.  But everything was quick and easy and it all worked out for us!  I will probably have to take off the last couple weeks of school but that's fine with me--I get to not deal with the graduations ;-)

  • I'm an elementary teacher! My due date is June 3. I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to take leave at the beginning of the school year, or just have the ten weeks of summer off. Decisions, decisions...

  • Clbehenna, I only took 6 weeks of with DD and it was not enough. 8 weeks probably would not have even been enough with DD. She was a bit of a needy/difficult baby. I'm hoping number two is not quite so needy, and this time around I will have plenty of help from the family since my parents live only one street away now. I think 10 weeks of summer should be sufficient unless there are some extenuating circumstances, but it's up to you. As an experienced teacher, I can say that the first couple weeks with my students really lays the foundation for the rest of the year in terms of expectations. I just don't know if I would want to put that into a sub's hands.
  • 6th grade math teacher here... Edd is June 24th. I am going to try not to leave my kiddos alone but we starts the last week in August and I may have to miss the first two weeks or so..
  • Teach gr 2/3
Edd June 26 (last day of school this year) - previous years it would have been our summer break already.

  • In Louisiana, we get out of school the last week of May and go back the second week of August, so I will deliver almost a month into my summer vacation, which isn't ideal, but it's better than if it was in the middle of the school year.
  • I teach high school. My EDD is June 15. Thinking about taking the first two weeks of school off and not going back until the start of September.
  • Wow! That's amazing! I want 14 months off LOL. Maybe the U.S. needs to learn a little something from Canada.
  • I'm an elementary art teacher. My due date is June 26th.. The last day of school for us! I will probably return to work on the first day of school in September.

  • So glad to hear from all you teachers! I teach middle school art and my edd is June 17. My current plan is to have a lt sub for the first few weeks of fall semester. It may be rough coming in mid-quarter to classes who haven't had my "training" but I figure I won't really mind too much. Our original "plan" was to get pregnant early summer so my due date would be April or may, take the rest of the spring off, and be back for fall. Oh well, best laid plans...
  • You could possibly come in and train your subs on your rules/behavior plans. I was in for a lady who had surgery and she came in and I just adopted her system. Smoother transition when she came back!

  • I used to be a music teacher (got laid off, couldn't find another job, changed careers entirely) and DH is a teacher as well. We were trying for a year before I finally got pregnant, and I'm thrilled with the timing. Schools end at the end of June around here, so I don't know if he'll take any time off then, but then he has two months off with us. (And as I said, since he won't be going to work every morning, if he thinks he is getting out of waking up in the middle of the night with the baby for those first two months, he is WRONG! Bwahahaha. I like this kid already.)

  • I teach elementary school. My son was due on the last day of school in June. I ended up going out at the end of May due to high blood pressure, but planned on working until mid-June. I really liked having the summer off plus maternity leave, so I'm happy to be due in June again.
My sub was really good. He would text me once in a while so I knew what was going on, but didn't drive me crazy either. I helped him set up in August and met up with him a few days before I went back in January.

  • I teach 2nd grade and sometimes don't like leaving my kiddos with a sub. We have been trying for 3 years so I gave up on planning around summer but lucky I ended up with a June 26 EDD all by chance :-)
  • I teach at a university.  DD was a June baby, and this one will be, too.  DD was a surprise and I was SO grateful she was a summer baby--and this one was very carefully planned to coincide with an academic schedule.  Makes everything so much easier!

  • OP, I have the same EDD! And @Jiillan, I'm an elementary art teacher too! Our year ends the week before on the 18th. I think I'm going to use the sick days I've saved up and take the first couple weeks off at the beginning of the year. Otherwise baby will only be 7 weeks when it starts daycare. I also hate the idea of a sub setting the wrong tone for the year (no offense to long term subs, I'm just kind of a control freak with my classroom) but spending a little more time with the little nugget will be more important.

I teach high school English. My due date is perfect because we'll be done all the important stuff in school by June 12. After Baby arrives, I'm leaving my current job and staying home until I find something in one of the good districts near me. I kept my position teaching in NJ when we moved to PA, but with a baby that commute will not be feasible. I'm going to miss my students so much but also looking forward to spending time with Baby :)
  • I'm HS bio. Due 6/14. As of now, I'm not planning to take off in the fall. I'm not opposed to it, but with DS I could not wait to go back after 6 weeks. Granted it was January and it was too cold to really go outside. But I really missed teaching!

I teach elementary music too!  K-8 and special ed K-5.

I teach music, too! Elementary PK-5 and special ed K-21.

We're still trying to figure out my due date. I know I'm somewhere between 5 1/2 and 7 weeks. That puts me in the second half of June. I really want to take off through September but hubby says we'll see what happens....whatever that means.
  • I teach middle school reading grades 5-8. We are due June 2nd. I'll have a sub the last month of school and go back on September. When I do my husband will be home with Lil D so no worries.
  • High school English over here. And my hubs is a teacher as well so I get 6 weeks of hubby help after baby comes! I feel so blessed! I know most moms hold out hope for 2 weeks of paternity leave. Great to see other teachers on here!
  • High school Math! EDD June 20 - we tried to plan it that way. Love seeing other teachers :)
  • 5th grade math teacher! We got lucky again and will be expecting June 14th. I'm sure we'll have snow days so I'll probably have to call off the last couple of days/weeks. I plan on going back at the start of school. Last pregnancy I had to leave earlier because of unbearable sciatic and SI joint pain. My son was born in May. My sub had just finished his student teaching, and was hired to fill my shoes. I try not to think about what went on in my absence.

  • I teach 3rd grade. I'm due June 4th and our last day of school is June 5th!! We will see what happens. My daughter was born on her due date, so maybe it will happen again or after school is done. Only time will tell!
  • I'll probably have to take off before my edd bc I'll be delivering 4 hours from here, but I will get the summer not included in mat leave then the full teaching year then the summer. They won't make me go back for the last 2 weeks of the year
  • I teach HS English, EDD June 12th. I was really hoping for being due March or April so I could have some time off plus summer, but I'm just thrilled to be pregnant. I'm not sure whether I'm just taking the summer or a few weeks on either end. I really think it's important to start the year with my new kids but I have a feeling those priorities might change. We are in school until June 6, so I'm not sure if I'll make it until the end or not.

  • I teach first grade.  I am due a week or two after school ends and I plan to go back the first week of school with a sub to teach them my expectations, and then I will take off the next 6 weeks through the middle of October off.

  • Grade 1 teacher here! I'm due June 15 and our last day of school is June 23 this year. So I'm hoping to at least make it to the 15th and then secure a sub for the last week of school! And I'm in Canada too so I won't return until September 2016!

  • I am a 4th grade teacher and first-time mama. I am due June 21, and our last day of school will be around May 14ish and we will probably start back on August 13. So I am feeling pretty lucky with the timing!
  • I have my teaching degree but don't teach right now. I do work in a high school though, so DH and I also planned a summer baby and got lucky to get an EDD of June 24 as well!

  • Hello! I'm an elementary principal and this is my first post! It's so nice to see so many teachers on here. My husband is a teacher too, so we will enjoy the summer as a family of three! He gets 10 weeks and I get 7 in the summer. After trying for four years, I'm thinking of taking off the first six weeks of school and enjoying this time. I know the show will go on and hopefully one of our teacher leaders can fill in!
  • I teach kindergarten special Ed. My EDD is June 27 and our last day of school is June 26! We just started ttc in October (this is our first) and we talked about how amazing it would be to have the baby in early summer, but I never imagined I'd be so lucky to get pregnant right away. Of course who knows when I'll actually deliver. I don't have tenure yet so I would be very happy to have the whole summer home, go back in September and not miss any work. Plus the students I work with are severely disabled and don't do well with change, and the beginning of the year is such an important time it would be very hard for me to leave my class in someone else's hands. I know there are lots of capable subs/leave replacements out there, but you could also end up with someone who is not quite cut out for this type of population. Anyway, my husband is a teacher as well (high school auto shop) so we're looking forward to having to summer home together with baby. So exciting!
