Pumpkins...Now What?

So in case you haven't figured this out by now, I'm a terrible person. I bought 2 pumpkins 2 weeks ago intending to have a great sensory and fine motor building experience with N, and they're still sitting in my garage. At this point I'm not going to put them on my porch, but I hate to let them go to waste. So what should I do with them? I'm kind of terrified of cooking them b/c I've never had cooked pumpkin before and all new and strange things should be feared and shunned, right? No? But seriously, the smell of pumpkin-scented candles makes me instantly and horrifically nauseated. So here are my questions:

1. Does cooked pumpkin smell like pumpkin-scented candles? (If yes, then ignore the other questions b/c I just can't.)
2. What can I make with them besides roasted pumpkin seeds?

Re: Pumpkins...Now What?

  • Cooked pumpkin does not smell like the candles. I think they smell more like pumpkin pie which smells more like the spices than the pumpkin...but don't cook your carving pumpkins. If you want cooked pumpkin you want small pie pumpkins.

As far as what to do with them, what about some sort of Fall/Thanksgiving centerpiece? I bet pintrest has some good ideas.

  • The big pumpkins you buy for carving are not the kind you want for eating.
The small pumpkins are for eating.
  • I've been known to cook a carving pumpkin then puree for pumpkin pie. You put so much spice in it that it still makes a good pie. I hate to throw them out so pie it is in this house. I also let the baby play in the "guts" then pull out the seeds to roast. He gets to play with the guts of all the squash we eat and he loves it.

  • I think it smells like acorns squash. But I love that smell. Homemade pumpkin pie is divine!

  • I've cooked a larger pumpkin as well and made purée to freeze. I like making apple pumpkin curry soup with it. It's DELICIOUS.

  • Pie pumpkins. Vs carving pumpkins. Pie pumpkins are much smaller.

I have some white and bluish ones. What are those for? Decorations? Lol

I always thought the neck pumpkins were for pie

  • Yes those are probably just decorative. Anything you got from a pumpkin patch is probably not a pie pumpkin. They are smaller and have thicker walls, ime.

  • Don't feel bad Jane. We bought two pumpkins. We carved one with the kids and it was rotten before Halloween. The second one was supposed to be for my class. It stayed in my car basically the while month of October and i just took it out last week and it's sitting by my mail box. Oops
