Lapase Issues?

I'm a lurker and I've never posted on here, but I'm having issues with my frozen milk, so here is goes.  I'm going back to work on Sunday after a 12 week mat leave.  I have about 120 oz of milk frozen.  I have been pumping, freezing it in a silicone ice tray, and then transferring it to a freezer zip lock bag. I was getting a few oz out to put in a separate baggie to take to my Mom's tomorrow and noticed that it smelled "off."  I thought it was a soured smell, Hubs thought it was more of a freezer burn smell.  I took a cube and thawed it and tasted it.  It smells and tastes like a penny.  Even got some on a spoon and baby girl made an awful face when she tasted it.  I have read about Lapase on Kellymom and I'm thinking that's my problem.  So I guess I need to throw out all the milk that smells off and start to scald before I freeze?  I have a bag that I just started today and it doesn't smell.  I guess this is even more of an indication that it's a lapase issue?  Sorry if I'm all over the place... just frazzled because I thought I was doing so well with 120 oz.  Anyone else have any experience??

Re: Lapase Issues?

  • Thanks for the reply casey78. I'm a FTM and still have the momma breakdowns pretty easily.  I will do some more research and see if lo will accept the milk that has already "turned."

  • My milk has high lipase as well. I thought DD would have an issue taking it as well, but she doesn't seem to mind.

I agree with PP that her face may have just been a reaction to the spoon. DD makes that face with anything new that goes into her mouth. Try an actual bottle and see how she does. Hopefully she'll take it just fine.

If she absolutely won't take it, even with mixing it with fresh milk, you could consider donating that milk. Even with the lipase issue, some mama and baby out there would be grateful for it. It's a personal decision, but just another option instead of dumping it.

Thanks for the advice. If all else fails, I will Def look into donating it. Did your milk smell kind if soured or more metallic? I'm probably over thinking it, but just want to be absolutely sure that it isn't spoiled. I did not like the taste of it... even got a drink of water to get the taste out of mouth. Maybe I should try my fresh milk to compare?

  • It definitely smells different from fresh, kind of like how your DH described it, like freezer burn. And it tastes sort of soapy, maybe a little metallic.

Trust me, you'd know if it was actually soured.

  • My milk also smells metallic after it's frozen.  I haven't done a taste comparison with the fresh, but LO doesn't seem to mind.
  • I wouldn't ditch it either. Even if you can't get LO to take you could save it for when your LO starts solids. Mix it with cereal or other foods. Or put in pancakes when your LO gets to that point. If you put in a deep freeze it will be totally fine til then.
  • I have lapase issues as well, but it never bothered my LOs.  Honestly, I don't know how they drank it, it tasted like soap, so different than fresh, but they never seemed to care!
